Okay, so I'm sure the map doesn't work like this, but it's just amusing.
How Is That Possible
Harry, Ron, and Hermione were making one last check on the Marauder’s Map before leaving Gryffindor Tower to go on yet another of their late night prowls around the castle when Ron noticed something odd.
Pointing to a room not very far from where they were standing, he said, “Does that dot look particularly large to you guys?”
Looking more closely, Hermione said, “It’s got two names on it...Dumbledore and McGonagall. Wait, I think it’s two dots they’re just very close together so they look like one.”
“How close do you have to get for that to happen and why would they be that close?” Ron asked.
“Maybe they’re walking arm in arm, you’ve seen them do that,” Harry suggested.
Hermione studied the dots again, “I don’t think so...it’s not exactly moving. I mean when people are walking their dots travel.” Just to test the theory, she looped her arm through Harry’s and the three of them checked their dots again. “See,” she said, “we’re still two distinct dots.”
“Well, if they’re not moving, maybe they’re sitting very close together,” Harry tried.
Hermione pushed Ron into the nearest chair and sat on the arm, their dots did not blend into one large dot the way the professors’ had. She tried sitting on his lap, it was closer, but still not quite one big dot.
“Strange, isn’t it,” Ron said. “It’s like they’re one big McGonagall/Dumbledore dot, but nothing we’ve done has made our dots look like that.” He looked at the map again, “Wait, look at the names. When we stand next to each other, our names are beside each other, but look at theirs. It goes Dumbledore, huge double dot, McGonagall from top to bottom.”
The three students continued staring at their professors’ names and suddenly the names switched places and the dots shifted slightly, now McGonagall’s name was on top. They had never seen anything like this on the map before. If someone was sitting still, their dot would be stationary, and if they were walking, the dot would track the movement. These two dots, or rather one large dot, were staying in the same place but sort of dancing back and forth over a minuscule distance. The movement wasn’t noticeable if they didn’t watch closely. They were so enthralled in this new mystery that they completely forgot about their plans for the night. After a while, none of them were sure how long they had been watching, the one big dot became two separate dots again and grew still, but they were still touching.
Hermione, ever the observant one, looked over the map again trying to judge the distance between their three dots and those of McGonagall and Dumbledore. “Um, Harry,” she asked, “do you know where they are?”
Harry looked closely at the map, sizing up the distance between the common room and the professors and trying to remember what he knew of the castle’s layout. Suddenly, he paled and could barely stammer out, “I – I think...that’s...M–McGonagall’s room.” There was a long pause before he said, “You don’t think they were...” Harry couldn’t finish, he trailed off with a barely suppressed shudder.
Ron looked at him blankly, “What?”
Hermione gave him an exasperated look, “Really, Ron, what would two adults be doing in the same bedroom in the middle of the night that would cause them to be that close.”
Ron gulped, “You mean?” His face turned green as realization dawned. “And we just basically watched it?! Bloody hell!”
Harry looked at his friends, “Did you know they were together?”
Hermione shook her head, Ron didn’t answer as he was too busy trying not to think about it.
“I think it’s sweet,” Hermione said. “I wonder why we’ve never realized they were involved before, I mean they are together all the time.”
Harry shrugged as Ron finally found his voice again, “Hermione! I really don’t want to sit around and analyze this to death, can we please please never speak of this again.”
“Alright then, we should go to bed. It’s too late to do anything more tonight,” Hermione answered.
“I’m going to have nightmares about this, I just know I am,” Ron moaned as he and Harry walked up the stairs to their dormitory after bidding Hermione goodnight.
“Well, at least it won’t be spiders,” Harry suggested with a grin.
“I think I’d rather have the spiders back,” was Ron’s answer.
