Vows Revealed
Late into the night, a bright light shone from the small window of Ron Weasley’s room. Surrounded by old books and dusty parchments, Ron, Harry, Hermione, and Ginny scribbled notes and made lists. There were just two days until Bill and Fleur’s wedding. The Burrow had been a bustle of activity ever since the foursome’s return from Hogwarts only five days ago. With Fleur’s family arriving tomorrow, Molly Weasley had heaped loads of chores on the returning students from the moment they stepped off the Hogwarts Express. The cleaning imposed on Grimmauld Place two summers ago was nothing compared the complete top - to - bottom scrubbing the Weasley home had undergone in the last few days.
Despite all the activity, Harry was still intent on leaving as soon as possible to search for the Horcruxes. Ron and Hermione were still intent on accompanying him. Ginny, meanwhile, was intent on contributing where she could, whether Harry’s girlfriend or not. During the long train ride home, Harry had concocted his plan. They would stay at The Burrow until the day after the wedding, and then head to number four, Privet Drive – staying only long enough for the blood protection to take affect. Hermione guessed that would take about two weeks. The next stop was Godric’s Hollow and in search of the remaining Horcruxes. The amount of work Mrs. Weasley required of them during the day had forced the four to study and plan for the trip after dinner and late into the night. Harry had only told Ginny the smallest bits of information about what he, Ron and Hermione would be looking for.
Ginny was in charge of securing supplies and communication. She was making supply lists, arranging the ordering and delivery of anything the Trio might need and did not have. Ginny would accompany them on the journey as far as Godric’s Hollow. She’d then act as the Trio’s point of contact with the Order and the rest of the wizarding world. Ginny and Hermione had teamed up together to find and research as many spells as possible before the Trio would leave on their quest. According to the timeline drawn up by Ginny and Hermione, the four of them would review every spell in the entire Hogwarts curriculum, including the sixth - and seventh - year spells, before Ginny would leave them at Godric’s Hollow.
Hermione, who was in charge of research and facts as usual, was continuing to hunt for references to the identity of R.A.B. She was also attempting to learn as much as she could about the Hogwarts Founders, including any known relics they left behind. She had read Hogwarts, A History yet again and then moved on to lesser-known works.
Meanwhile, Ron and Harry were combing through any Ministry records and reports on known Death Eaters, their property and possessions. Ron hypothesized if Lucius Malfoy had had possession of Tom Riddle’s diary; maybe the some of the other Death Eaters were safeguarding the other Horcruxes either knowingly or unknowingly. While attempting to remember everything Dumbledore told him over the last year, Harry was constructing a list of possible places Tom Riddle might have deemed worthy enough to hide one of his precious Horcruxes.
Ron’s stomach started to rumble; dinner had been several hours ago. Ron headed out of his room announcing he was going downstairs to get a sandwich and some pumpkin juice. Hermione decided it was as good a time as any for a break. She and Ginny immediately started discussing how Hermione was planning to wear her hair for the wedding. Harry shut his eyes in a vain attempt to relax.
Several minutes later, Ron burst through his bedroom door, out of breath and without his midnight snack. “You are never going to guess what I heard Dad and Bill fighting about downstairs.” This immediately caught the attention of everyone in the room. Ron seemed as though he was in a state of shock. “I can’t believe it. Dad was almost yelling. Bill stormed out of the house. I have not seen Dad that mad since the day he throw out Percy. I just can’t believe it.”
“Ron! What is it? What could have Dad yelling?” The concern was evident in Ginny’s voice.
“Bill and Fleur are going to do a Double Bonding at the wedding.”
Hermione’s hand flew to her mouth in shock. Ginny just stared at her older brother dumb struck. “No, they can’t!” Ginny’s voice rang with outrage, as her anger overrode her shock.
Harry just remained in his seat, slightly confused. “Ginny, what could be the problem with them performing a Bonding? Isn’t that normal at Wizard weddings?” Three bewildered faces met Harry’s statement.
Hermione began to explain. “Harry,” she said in her typical ‘where have you been all this time’ tone of voice, “when wizards marry they have the choice of a regular Muggle wedding, a wizard bonding, or the combination of both.”
“Hermione, I know that so I don’t see why a Double Bonding would be that much more of a big deal.”
“Mate, don’t you get it? A regular Bonding can be broken if the couple splits up but only with a series of complex spells. A Double Bonding is, well…” Ron’s voice trailed off.
Hermione broke in, “Permanent. A Double Bonding cannot be broken. The magic ties the couple together forever - in this life and all of eternity. Unlike a normal Bonding, when one dies, the other isn’t able to remarry.”
“Yea, Harry, it’s hugely serious. Mum and Dad didn’t even perform their Double Bonding until their 20th wedding anniversary.” Ginny’s eyes had gone all misty. Ron rolled his eyes until he caught the dreamy look on Hermione’s face as she stared straight at him. “It was a beautiful ceremony - the whole family was there. I was seven. It was the first time Mum bought new robes for herself since Charlie was born. She made me a matching dress, even though it was her and Dad’s special day. When the spell was completed, a golden aura surrounded both Mum and Dad for hours. It was extraordinarily beautiful.” The look of joy on Ginny’s face made Harry’s heart flutter.
“Harry, mate, the point is most couples don’t perform a Double Bonding spell until after they have been together for some time. The spell is traditionally saved for significant anniversaries or for when the couple’s last child comes of age. Bill and Fleur want to do a Double Bonding now, not later.”
“He could be tied to her forever! I cannot believe Bill is even considering it! What if in five years he hates her? What then?” Ginny’s voice betrayed both her love and concern for her eldest brother.
Hermione attempted to be rational. “Maybe they won’t be able to find someone to perform the spell. A Double Bonding is extremely complex and can only be completed by some of the most skilled wizards.”
“No, I heard Bill tell Dad they had already gotten one of the senior curse-breakers Bill used to work with in Egypt to agree to do it.”
Ginny just groaned. “I can’t think about working anymore tonight.” She looked to Hermione. “I am going to bed. Are you coming?”
With one last look at Ron, Hermione followed Ginny out of the room.
In the two days before the wedding, The Burrow was the center of an even greater amount of hustle and bustle, which Harry hadn’t been sure, was possible. Ironically, it was both Mrs. Weasley and Fleur together, who mended the rift between Mr. Weasley and his oldest son. Fleur told both men she loved Bill too much to let a single spell come between her and her new family. Molly informed the two men she had faith in Bill’s choosing Fleur as his wife. With the women in happy agreement, the couple decided to perform the regular Bonding spell and the subject was closed.
At breakfast the morning of the wedding, Ginny explained to Harry that Bonding spells weren’t always successful; no one really knew why. If Bill and Fleur’s Bonding spell was successful, Bill and Fleur would glow silver. She went on to explain that the couples in attendance who were also bonded would glow as well. The more intense the metallic color, the greater and older the bond between the couple. Her parents, and any other couple who was doubly bonded, would once again have the golden aura around them. The thought of the glowing couples brought a bit of sorrow to Harry’s heart. If my parents were here, Harry wondered, what color would they glow?
As the time for the wedding grew closer, Ron and Harry acted as ushers, greeting the guests, and helping them to their seats. The ceremony would take place in the meadow near The Burrow. Hermione, Ginny, and Mrs. Weasley, along with Fleur’s mother and her sister, Gabrielle, had decorated the area with hundreds of flowers and fairies. Molly had outdone herself with both the amount and variety of food. With their work finished, the women retreated to The Burrow to get ready, leaving Harry, Ron, and Mr. Weasley to greet the arriving guests. Charlie was babysitting the exceptionally nervous Bill. Fred and George had volunteered to mind the food and refreshments, which made both Harry and Ron very nervous.
As the guests started to arrive, Harry was surprised at how many attendees he knew. He had met Fleur’s family over the last few days. The other guests, a few of Bill’s classmates from Hogwarts and his colleagues from Gringotts, had arrived and all happily introduced themselves to Harry. Most of the Order was expected to attend as well.
Remus and Tonks were the first of the Order members to arrive. Harry decided now was the time to ask the nagging question hanging out at the back of his brain. Without even a greeting, Harry marched up to Remus and Tonks, who were in a happy conversation with Ron and his dad, and voiced his question. “Remus, were my parents double-bonded?”
Remus raised his eyebrows. Tonks made eye contact with both Arthur and Ron. She asked what there was to eat and the three of them wandered away from Remus and Harry.
“It’s nice to see you to Harry. Yes, Tonks and I are doing fine. You should come and see us at Grimmauld Place this summer.”
Harry signed, knowing Remus’ response was a direct repercussion of his initial rudeness. “I am sorry, Remus. I just found out about the Double Bonding Spell a few days ago and it has pestered me ever since.”
Remus understood now what had Harry upset. It was the thought of Lily and James not being together in eternity. Taking a deep breath and saying a small prayer, Remus plunged forward, “Harry, your parents were very, very much in love. Although they didn’t actually perform a Double Bonding Spell while they were alive, I know their love for each other, for their lives together, and for you most of all, bound them together both in this life and the next.”
A huge sense of relief washed over Harry. “I just couldn’t live with the fact they might be separated from each other as well as from me.”
Remus gave Harry a hug. “Harry, my boy, I am sure there are a number of souls all confederated together in their watch over you.”
Knowing Remus was referring to Sirius and Dumbledore, just as much as his parents, he grinned, comforted in the thought that those who he loved and lost were watching over him. Putting a hand on the older man’s shoulder, Harry spoke what was in his heart, “They are watching after us both, Remus. I am sure of it.”
Remus returned the grin and guided Harry towards the others.
As the ceremony started, Harry and Hermione grabbed two seats next to Tonks and Remus on the outside end of a row. Ron, decked out in new dress robes thanks to Fred and George, was standing with Bill, along the rest of his brothers, which, surprisingly included Percy, who had the just arrived. The vision of Ginny coming down the aisle in a periwinkle bridesmaid dress nearly caused Harry’s heart to stop. Just as his mind began to play out what it would be like to hold her in his arms while dancing with her in that dress, something moved. Out of the corner of his eye, Harry saw three figures Apparate to the edge of the meadow. Instinctively, Harry reached for his wand and started to get up. As the figures drew closer, he recognized the familiar gait of Alastor Moody accompanied by Madam Pomfrey. Instantly, Harry knew who the third of the three figures was. She was dressed in black robes from head to toe. Her robes did nothing hide the fact she was thinner and looking older then Harry remembered her being just a short week ago. Alastor and Madame Pomfrey made their way to two seats a few rows behind the four of them. Harry couldn’t help but notice Professor McGonagall stopped at the edge of the crowd just off to the side and didn’t take a seat.
As the ceremony started, Harry’s imagination wandered. He scanned the crowd, wondering what couples among them were bonded and happy. Harry’s eyes refused to obey his brain as they continually found their way back to Ginny. In Harry’s mind, she was a vision of perfect loveliness standing up there with Fleur and Gabrielle. His thoughts drifted from Ginny to his parents, and what it would be like to have them with him here now. Would they have liked Ginny? Harry wondered about his parents. Thinking it over, he was sure they would have. The thought of Harry introducing Ginny to his parents made his eyes water. Harry had to escape. Getting up as quickly and quietly as he could, Harry made his way to the back of the crowd.
Just as he rounded the last row of seats, the spell was completed. Harry felt the wave of magical energy radiate through the crowd. Bill and Fleur emitted a shimmering silver flush. The Bonding spell had been successful! Looking away from where Bill and Fleur were standing, Harry noticed a number of the couples in the crowd starting to glow. Surprisingly, Alastor Moody and Poppy Pomfrey sat hand in hand, glowing a beautiful, pure, light silver. Harry suddenly realized they had been newly married. Molly and Arthur sat surrounded by a flawless golden aura. Ironically, Harry realized the strongest and purest glow was emanating, not from the crowd, but from someone to his side.
Harry turned his head towards the light. Standing just a short distance away from him was Minerva McGonagall. His professor stood surrounded by the most brilliant display of golden light Harry had ever seen. It wasn’t only the light which fascinated him but also the feeling of peace and completeness emanating from her as well. Her eyes were closed. Her face had a look of absolute contentment. Harry slowly realized the light around her had begun to take shape. It appeared to be enveloping her in an embrace. Harry stared, awestruck, as the shape took on the form of Albus Dumbledore. The glowing form of Dumbledore kissed McGonagall on the cheek, whispered something in her ear that made her smile, and nuzzled her neck as his form gradually faded away. Realizing he had just witnessed one of the most intimate displays of love he would probably ever see in his life, Harry swallowed and quietly walked toward his former Head of House. Harry wanted her to know he wouldn’t fail her and Dumbledore.
“Professor?”
Her eyes were wet with unshed tears as they met his. “Yes, Harry?” Her voice was softer then normal.
The use of his first name startled him a bit. “I am glad you loved him. He deserved someone as wonderful as you. You deserved him as well.”
Her mouth curved up a little. She brought her hand up to rest on Harry’s shoulder. “We were very happy together for almost fifty years. Thank you for your kind words, Harry. Albus loved you very much, as do I. I am sorry he wasn’t able to stay with you until…the end.”
Harry gathered Minerva into a tentative hug. “Don’t worry; I know what I have to do. We will win. He didn’t leave you in vain.”
She wrapped her arms around him returning his awkward embrace. “Thank you Harry. The Order and I will be there for you when you need us. You know that right?”
Harry nodded his head as he basked in the warmth of her arms around him. “Come, Harry, I believe it is time for some of Molly’s wonderful cake.”
