Minerva McGonagall walked briskly through the deserted halls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It had been a hard day and all she wanted to do was pop by and see her friend Poppy Pomfrey before heading to bed for a well deserved sleep.
She reached the hospital wing and was surprised to see that the light's in the room seemed dimmer than usual for this time of night. The wing was empty and Poppy wasn't sat at her usual station the behind the desk in the middle of the room.
"Poppy!" called out Minerva
The deputy headmistress received no answer, she glanced around the deserted room. Movement in the store cupboard caught her well trained eye and she moved forward. The sound of the medi-witches voice made it to her ears.
"We shouldn't be doing this," she had said with a naughty giggle that Minerva had never heard come from her before "don't you feel just a little bit bad?""
A man's voice made Minerva stop in her tracks and place her hand up against her throat as she tried to take in what she was hearing.
"She doesn't feel me with fire like you," said the voice of Albus Dumbledore, her husband "it wore off many years ago but with you, I feel alive Poppy!"
Minerva felt herself back away from the store cupboard slowly, not daring to breath in case it made the two deceivers aware of her presence. Minerva walked back wards into a trolley that was piled high with blankets and all manner of things that were needed in a busy school hospital wing. Her cat like reflexes failed her as she watched, to her horror a heavy metal bowl fell to the floor and made a loud clanging noise.
"Who is there?" she heard a voice call out
She closed her eyes and tried to remain silent, hoping they wouldn't see her. She hoped they would walk past her and let her be on her own, she couldn't believe what she had just witnessed.
"Minerva?" questioned the voice she knew to well, she felt him place a hand on her shoulder and she wanted to finch away. "Minerva!"
"Leave me alone!" she managed to say
"Come on Tabby," he said with a bemused tone evident in his voice "you will get a bad neck if you sleep all night on the couch!"
Her emerald green eyes flew open as the last of his spoken words tumbled out. She looked around and saw that she was indeed, curled up on the couch in the living room she had shared with Albus for twenty five years. Poppy Pomfrey was nowhere in sight, it was just her and her husband.
"You look alarmed darling!" said Albus as he knelt down beside her "are you okay?"
"Was I in the hospital wing at all this evening?" she asked
"Not as far as I know!" he answered, he reached for her hand and let his thumb caress her knuckles "why do you ask?"
Minerva suddenly felt rather foolish, she must have been dreaming about her husband's betrayal but it had seemed so real. She could still feel the hot tears prickling behind her eyes, her heart still felt broken but here she was back in her rooms with Albus.
"I must have been dreaming!" she said quietly
"Dreaming?" asked Albus who was surprised by her confession, Minerva rarely admitted to remembering or even having dreams even though it had been proved by muggles that people do dream while asleep. "Want to share the adventure with me?"
"Albus," she asked, she needed to ask a question that had been on her mind since half way through the dream she had reluctantly been having "are you still satisfied?"
"Apart from never having enough sherbet lemons, yes I am!" he answered with a raised eyebrow "Why do you ask?"
"I don't mean sweets Albus," she snapped "I mean do I still erm.....light your fire?"
Albus certainly had not expected Minerva to come out with something like that, he wasn't sure how she could even doubt herself in that way.
"Tabby," he said as he reached out for both her hands "why are you asking me this? Don't you know how I feel about you?"
"Will you just answer the question!" she replied, coolly.
"Darling," he began, concern evident in his blue eyes "you are my everything, you hold my heart, my body and my soul. You have never stopped lighting the fire that consumes me daily. I want you as much I did all those years ago, no one can touch me the way you do love. We are connected on many levels. I still crave you and your touch!"
Tears were flowing freely down Minerva's face as she heard what she needed to hear, she had known this already but she had wanted to hear it from his lips.
"Oh Albus!" she sobbed
Albus pulled her into his arms and held her to him, rocking her slightly before pressing a kiss into her temple.
"I love you!" he whispered into her ear
"I love you too!" she replied soon after the sobs quietened down.
"Do you want to tell me what made you ask me such a question!" he asked, curious to know what had made his wife question herself.
"My dream," began Minerva "was about you and Poppy. You were together and I heard you say that I didn't please you anymore."
"Oh my darling," he said softly "it was just a dream baby. Why I don't I show you that you still very much light my fire!"
Without even waiting for a reply, Albus scooped her up in his arms and had stood up. He amazed himself at time with the amount of strength he had. He carried his beloved wife into the bedroom and kicked the door shut with his foot.
That night, Minerva received all the proof that she needed to reassure her that she did, indeed still light her husband's fire.
THE END!
