The Barmy Old Fool
Rating: PG
Summary: Is there more in a Weird Sisters song then appears. Answer to Challenge #39
Albus Dumbledore stared at the envelope in absolute misery. He had to attend the concert it was a Ministry fundraiser but still it just had to be that band. Albus sighed and thought about it all. It wouldn’t be so bad if the band wasn’t so popular or if he hadn’t been the lucky wizard who they had dedicated their first single to entitled “You Barmy Old Fool”. If the members hadn’t already been out of Hogwarts he no doubt would of assigned detentions for the lot of them. He liked a good joke but even he had limits. He couldn’t even escape this fundraiser. Somehow he had been talked into introducing the band. He had to find someone to go with him so he wouldn’t feel so miserable the whole time. With a firm picture of his Deputy in mind he made his way to her office.
Minerva was smiling deviously inside. The concert had been her ideal and it hadn’t taken very much to convince her former charges to send Albus two tickets and request that he announce the band. She ignored the little voice in her mind that sounded suspiciously like Severus Snape saying she was acting like the Queen of Slytherin not the matriarch of the lions den. Albus knocked on her door in his curious style of shave and a hair cut two bits. No doubt it was a leftover of his misspent youth. She called out softly.
“Come in Albus. How are you today? I was just finishing the Hogwarts letters.”
“Min it is horrible. I have been coerced into introducing the band the Weird Sisters at their charity concert for Orphans of Voldemort. I was wondering would you come keep me company. I am rather desperate and I don’t particularly want to be alone.”
“Of course Albus. I rather like the Weird Sisters.”
“The concert is tomorrow at 4 pm. Meet you at 1:30 in the Entrance Hall.”
“Of course Albus. Don’t worry this will be fun.”
“Okay Minerva. I need to go write Aberforth about it. See you then.”
As Albus left he heard Minerva humming. The tune sounded suspiciously familiar. He shook his head and went back to his office not getting to bear witness to the evil smile that danced upon his Deputy’s face. Minerva would finally get Albus to actually listen to the song.
The next day arrived fast and when 1:30 came around it found Minerva McGonogall sitting in a pair of purple muggle jeans with glitter on them and a Weird Sisters t-shirt waiting for the yet elusive Albus Dumbledore on a bench in the entrance hall. He arrived and looked at her slightly awed.
“Minerva those are wonderful pants.”
“Thank you Albus now let us go.”
“I decided it would be easier if we used a portkey so I made us one.”
Albus held out the battered newspaper to Minerva and within mere seconds they stood on the stage of the Weird Sisters concert. Minerva and Albus clipped on their all access tickets and found their way to the green room. There the band was waiting slightly nervous having never played for such a large crowd. Minerva gave them a quick smile and began to chat with a guitarist as Albus found out exactly what he would be doing. The two kept glancing over to the preoccupied Headmaster while they spoke and if he were paying attention he would see a decisively Slytherin look in his deputy’s eyes. The time till the concert quickly passed and Albus went to make his announcement of the band.
“The times were dark and a number of children have found that they are alone without family. Therefore the charity named Orphans of Voldemort has been formed. This concert is to benefit the OoV and make sure the children have happy childhoods. So everyone have a happy time. I give you the Weird Sisters.”
Albus went off stage as the band came on amidst cheers from the large crowd. Minerva gave him a smile and a polite hug. She had to lean close to his ear.
“Just listen to the song Albus. Listen to the words.”
The band was playing that song but for the first time he listened to more then just to the chorus. His eyes began to grow wider with every passing word in disbelief of what the song really said. He looked to his Deputy who was smiling softly at him eyes full of love and dare he say it lust. She spoke the last words.
“Lemon sugar flavored and well past his prime. Silly little quirks and the brother of goats. He may be a barmy old fool but I still wish he would be mine.”
“Minerva I don’t know what to say.”
“Say yes to be mine. I want you as my barmy old fool.”
Albus Dumbledore kissed his Deputy and the rest of the concert was lost in little smiles and kisses. The guitarist came over to them afterwards. He was smiling largely.
“Congratulations sir but may I please speak frankly?”
“Of course.”
“Could you maybe when listening to songs actually listen to the words. We’ve been having to sing that song for over five years since we were in Hogwarts. It was the first one Professor McGonogall ever wrote for us.”
“Oh I will always listen to the words of songs. After all I never know when I will find love in them.”
After that whenever a Weird Sisters album came out the first person to buy one was Albus Dumbledore. More often then not he was mentioned in the dedications as well as the lyrics. Sometimes there would even be a song written M. M. D. and he would smile and listen to that song first paying special attention to the lyrics barmy old fool that he was.
