Summary: Minerva sees that Albus is incredibly overworked and needs a vacation. What better place then bright, sunny southern California in the great muggle U.S.A.? Let's see what mayham may persue...
The Many Meanings of the Rainbow....
Minerva walked into the office of her husband Albus Dumbledore only to find herself in the middle of a huge mess. There were stacks of paper everywhere, feathers from Fawkes settling all around (he had a bad habit of malting as he neared his burning day), and candy wrappers were littering the floor.
"Albus, where are you?" Minerva asked as she attempted to make her way around the numerous paper piles which were scattered around the floor.
"Over here, Minerva." Albus' voice was heard from behind the mess which he called his desk. But the piles of papers and letters were too high for her to see around them.
"Oh, for heaven's sake, Albus," she huffed. With the wave of her wand, the papers all disappeared from the office, all piled into a neat filing system that Minerva had created for her husband whenever things got too messy. Albus looked up.
"I was working on a few of those," he pouted. Minerva paid him no heed as she walked determedly towards his desk. She stopped just before it and rested her hands upon the top of her desk.
"Look, Albus, I know how important these documents are, and I know that that fool of a minister counts on you for every little thing, but even you, the great Albus Dumbledore, needs a vacation." The corners of Albus' mouth twitched upwards as he attempted to not smile at his wife's obvious irritation.
"I am sorry, my dear," he appologized as he leaned forward and rested his arms upon his desk. He steepled his fingers in his usual Dumbledore manner. "I fear that while I have been answering the all my demands as headmaster, I have been neglecting the most important role I have as husband. Forgive me?" She smiled as though she had just won an argument. He knew that smile. What was she up to?
"I was hoping you might ask," Minerva replied. With another flick of her wand, two bags appeared next to her. "You and I are going on a vacation together for a week. This is the perfect time, since school is out for the summer and the ministry is not demanding your attention as often as they usually do. You and I are going away, and not to any of our usual getaway spots."
"Oh?" asked Albus, quirking his brow. "And where, praytell, do you propose we go to?"
"We are going away to the muggle section of San Fransisco," she replied. Albus' eyebrows were nearly raised to his eyebrows.
"In America?" he asked. He thought about this for a minute. "Hmmm. California. I have not been there for quite some time. I suppose it might be quite different now as opposed to fifty years ago, when I last went. Sure, why not?" He stood up and scribbled a quick note. He walked over to where Fawkes stood and attached the note to the phoenix's leg. "I know you are not feeling your best, my friend, but I ask you to do this one last thing and then you have a week to do anything you like." Fawkes chirped before disappearing in a puff of smoke. Albus turned towards his wife and smiled. "Ready?"
"Of course." Minerva grabbed her husband's hand and off they went.
Oooooooooooo
"Oh, Albus, don't worry so much," Minerva said as they entered the muggle Sir Francis Drake Hotel in Downtown San Francisco. "You look absolutely stunning."
"I don't know, Min. I haven't had my beard this short since I was in my late thirties." He ran his fingers through his shortened white beard as if to make sure it was still there, what was left of it. It was only a few inches long, and the hair on his head was shortened to his shoulders as well. Minerva smiled up at him.
"It looks great," she told him. "I think it makes you look very handsome indeed." He smiled down at her.
"Oh, alright, Min, since you like it so much, I suppose I can handle it for a few days," he replied. She leaned up and kissed his cheek as they continued to walk to the front desk. The woman up there smiled at them.
"Hello, welcome to the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Do you have a reservation?"
"Yes, Albus and Minerva Dumbledore?" said Minerva. Albus smiled. Even after so many years of marriage, it delighted him to hear his name come out of her mouth. The woman looked up the name on their computor.
"Yes, here it is," she said. "Room 1202." She handed them a key to the room. "If you'll leave your bags with the bell hop, he'll take them up to your room."
"Thank you," Minerva said. She took the key, grabbed Albus' hand and led him to the elevator. As they were leaving, they could hear the woman say, "Oh, that couple was so cute. I hope I could have a husband and be all lovey dovey like that when I'm really, really old." They both looked up and smiled at each other.
"Oh dear, Min," he whispered to her. "Did you hear that? You are married to a 'really, really old' man who is 'lovey dovey'." Minerva chuckled as she wrapped her arm around his waist.
"Yes, but I like you that way," she joked back.
Oooooooooooo
When they reached their room, Albus fumbled with the money for a moment before finally figuring out how much to tip the man. When the man left, Albus turned around to find that he was alone in the room. He looked and went into the next room before he found Minerva on the balcony. He went out and stood with her.
"Here you are, my lovely wife," he smiled as he kissed her shoulder. "I was wondering where you'd gone." Minerva leaned back against her husband and smiled.
"I am glad I managed to convince you to come on this vacation."
"Me too, my love," he said. Just then, they heard music down below. They looked over the edge and noticed balloons and banners. "Oh look, my love. There's a parade going on down there." Minerva looked down.
"So there is," she responded. Albus pulled away and stood beside her.
"Why don't we go down there and see what is going on?"
"I don't know, Albus," replied Minerva. She bit her bottom lip. "I was rather hoping we could take a few minutes to unpack before we go anywhere. And I really was hoping to walk around at that antique show they were having outside that we passed by in the taxi. Not to mention I was hoping that we could go to that lovely little bistro we passed."
"Oh, come on, Tabby. It'll only be for a few minutes," pleaded Albus. He offered her his best puppy dog eyes. "Please?" Minerva smiled before resting her hand upon his cheek.
"Oh, could those eyes get any bigger? Alright, fine, let's go," she said. Albus bent over and kissed her passionately upon the lips before leading her out of their room and down the hall to the elevator. Surely a few moments watching the parade could not hurt, could it?
Oooooooooooo
Albus and Minerva walked through the crowded streets of San Francisco, which was growing more and more difficult to do so, considering the amount of people who showed up. Man onlookers were standing by as many more people were setting something up for the parade. Everyone was waving around flags, all rainbow in style. Minerva was busy looking at all the flags and wondering at the significance of the rainbow flag when suddenly she felt Albus' hand slip through her fingers.
"Albus?" she called out. She saw her husband as he was drawn away from the crowd. He tried to make his way back towards her, but couldn't.
"Stay right there," he called out. "I'll try and get back as soon as possible." And then he was lost, taken away by the large crowd.
"Stay here?" she muttered to herself. Wondering how and when Albus would make it back to her side, she looked around her before a rather husky looking woman grabbed her by the arm.
"Hey, honey, are you in the parade?" she asked, giving Minerva the once over. Suddenly, Minerva felt very uncomfortable in her sun dress, which offered a lot more cleavage than she liked to show. But Albus had insisted that she wear it, so for his sake she did.
"Er, no, I'm not," she replied. "And if I might ask, what is going on? Why the parade?" The woman laughed at her.
"Are you serious?" When Minerva continued to look confused, the woman stopped laughing. "What planet are you from?" Minerva felt her ears burning as her anger began to rise.
"I am from Europe, so please forgive my ignorance of the American custom," she replied through gritted teeth. The woman formed the word 'oh' with her mouth before answering.
"Well, babe, this is the Gay Pride Parade," she replied. "We have it every year. See all the rainbow flags and things? That is our flag." And with a wink and a pat to Minerva's bottom, the woman left. Minerva was left gaping and feeling rather violated. Then, the full impact hit her. The Gay Pride Parade? Oh dear. She had to find Albus. Where was he? Just as she was about to look for him, she felt herself being pushed forward and soon found herself on the curb, watching the parade from a front row spot. It was beginning now and she didn't know where Albus was.
Oooooooooooo
Albus was trying with all his might to find his way back to his wife. This crowd sure was thick. It was amazing anyone was able to navigate their way around. Albus was in the process of trying to find Minerva when someone ran into him from behind and forced him to fly forward and into another man, resulting in his hand landing right upon the other man's bottom. The man turned around and eyed Albus hungrily.
"Hey, good looking," he said, licking his lips. "You in the parade?" Albus, who felt his cheeks burning red from emberrassment, fumbled with what to say.
"Erm, no, I'm not," he replied.
"Well now you are," the man said as he winked at him. He pulled Albus by the hand and lead him onto the street. He picked up one end of a banner and handed it to Albus. "Here, take ahold of this, hot stuff."
"Well, actually, I-uh-," Albus didn't know what to say. Another man was hitting on him and he was now in a parade, standing next to another man who was dressed like a woman. He didn't know which one scared him more, but soon decided the latter was by far the most scary of the two. The first man pulled a card out of his back pocket and handed it to Albus.
"Here's my number. Call me some time, hot stuff," he said before he patted Albus on the bottom. Albus didn't know whether or not he should be offended or really scared at the man's actions. But he didn't have time to ponder which direction to take because just then the parade started and he began walking with the other men, although he still had no idea what this whole thing was for.
Oooooooooooo
Minerva was busy trying to find Albus as she stood in the spot, watching the parade. Where could that man be? Everyone started clapping, as did Minerva, although she was not quite sure what they were clapping at. She was not really paying attention to the parade. She was too busy looking around her, wondering what had happened to her husband? Then....
"Minerva!" She looked in the streets and was shocked at what she saw. Her husband, whom she had been married to for thirty years, was walking down the street, holding the corner of a sign that said "Gays are people too" on it in rainbow colors. He waved to her and smiled meekly. Minerva stared wide eyed at him and before she knew it, she was laughing so hard, tears were falling from her face. Albus Dumbledore was walking in the parade. Did he even know what his banner said? She did not know, but even if he didn't, that made it all the funnier. Albus looked at her and frowned. What was so funny? Just then, a man with a microphone began to talk.
"Welcome to our annual Gay Pride Parade. We are here to say that we are human too and deserve all the rights as heterosexuals. Yes, this is what we march for." Minerva laughed ten times harder when she saw the shocked expression of her husband. He looked like a fish out of water, in so many ways. He looked back at her and wanted to say 'help me' but didn't have the chance as he kept walking. What was he going to do? He was too much a gentleman to just drop his part of the sign and leave the parade. Minerva gained enough of her strength to stand upright and rush into the street. It was a few moments before she reached her husband and she began to whisper to him.
"You know, Albus, you play the part of a heterosexual man very well," she said as she looked at the people they passed. "After all, we've been married for thirty years and have three children together, and I would never have pegged you as a homosexual."
"Min," Albus began in a warning tone. But she continued.
"No no, you are very convincing. I thought I knew you, but I see I don't," she continued. "You should really consider a career on the stage. Tell me, how long have you known?"
"Min..." Albus said almost pleadingly. But she still did not let up.
"It's alright, Albus," she said. "I like to think of it as not losing a husband, but as gaining twice as many clothing."
"You are going to pay for these comments later on," Albus whispered in her ear. Minerva smiled innocently.
"I look forward to it," she smiled sweetly. With that, she left the parade.
"Min, wait, don't leave me here," he said. But she merely looked over her shoulder and called out to him.
"I'll see you back at the hotel, Albus," she called. Then, she was out of his sight.
Oooooooooooo
Minerva was still smiling and chuckling to herself about what happened when Albus returned to their hotel room two hours later. She looked at him and almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
"How was it?" she asked, not once moving from her spot where she was working on her embroidery. She enjoyed it, as it was something that often helped her to relax. His only answer was to glare at her.
"I did not appreciate you leaving me there, Minerva," he grumbled. "I paraded all over San Francisco, including the Golden Gate Bridge, to help support 'the cause'. And for what? A couple of other full grown men to pat my on my bum and ask for my number." Minerva had to bite back on her laugh. Then, she sighed at his warn face.
"Oh, I'm sorry, darling," she said as she finally got up and made her way towards him. She walked easily into his hands as she rested her arms around his neck. "But could you honestly blame them? You are rather dashing, if I do say so myself." He smiled for the first time since that whole ordeal started.
"Well, I DID get many compliments on my beard," he said. She chuckled too.
"I told you it would be worth it," she said before bringing his face down to meet his lips in a passionate kiss. When the kiss ended, he looked at her.
"And now, I see it is time for your punishment."
"Punishment?" she asked, frowning.
"For leaving me there," he replied. And in one quick swoop, he picked her up and carried to her to the bed, where the 'torture' was to commense.
A/N2: Well, I hope you liked it. LOL! ~mmadlyinlove~
