All of this is from the [glow=red,2,300][shadow=red,left,300]Infinite Incantatem [/shadow][/glow]website. I don't know if it's illegal to copy and paste everything here... Maybe it would have been better if I'd just put a link. If it's violating any laws please tell me so I can change.
This is a collection of moments from the books and movies that make us believe, Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall are a couple. Those moments are completely random. If you think, you know of another shipper-moment, please let us know and we will add it here.
These characters were introduced in the same scene at roughly the same time. Their conversation suggests that they go way back and they know a lot about each other. The whole first chapter pretty much supports this notion. (PS/SS1)
He offers her a lemon drop. (PS/SS1)
"It's lucky it's dark. I haven't blushed so much since Madam Pomfrey told me she liked my new earmuffs." - AD All I can say is... NUFF SAID. (PS/SS1)
They are on a first-name basis. (PS/SS1, CS5)
They sit next to each other at the High Table. This is likely just a professional thing, but it's still cute. (PS/SS7)
McGonagall tells Oliver Wood that she'll speak to Dumbledore about bending the first-year rule so Harry can play Quidditch for Gryffindor. I doubt she would have done this if she didn't think he would trust her judgement. (PS/SS9)
When they carry the petrified Colin Creevey to the hospital wing, Dumbledore says, "Minerva found him on the stairs." But a few lines later, she says, "If Albus hadn't been on his way downstairs for hot chocolate..." This doesn't have to "suggest" anything, so to speak, but one cannot help noticing that they conveniently happened to be in the same place at the same time... (CS10)
Dumbledore tells Fudge and Malfoy that he will never have truly left the school until there are none left who are loyal to him. McGonagall takes over as head once he leaves, and she is obviously very loyal to him. Again, this most likely has nothing to do with a romantic relationship, but it does support the notion that they are very close friends, and I personally have a difficult time with the whole friend vs. friendlier thing at some point in the relationship, be it early on or later. I think most people would agree. (CS14)
When Harry, Ron, Ginny, and Lockhart come into McGonagall's office, Dumbledore and McGonagall are standing next to each other. Once again, this doesn't really imply romance, but it's still cute, and besides, that's what these two are - cute. (CS18)
He knows his way around her office pretty well. (CS18)
When Dumbledore tells the school that they're going to host the Triwizard Tournament, Fred Weasley says, "You're JOKING!" Dumbledore's response is, "I am not joking, Mr. Weasley, though now that you mention it, I did hear an excellent one over the summer about a troll, a hag, and a leprechaun who all go into a bar..." Following this, McGonagall clears her throat loudly, stopping him from telling the joke. I think this is one of the most convincing signs from the books that they're involved. Couldn't you just see your parents doing that? I don't know about you, but I can't see myself doing that with a guy who was just my friend, or even a boyfriend (and a lot of my friends say I remind them of McGonagall - seriously!), or anyone who was just a friend. They know each other well enough to know what the other is thinking, and a connection like that only comes from being close to someone for a long time, like a spouse. Great shipper moment, I think. (GF12)
When Harry's name comes out of the Goblet of Fire, McGonagall immediately goes over to Dumbledore and starts whispering to him. When she gets done talking to him, he nods, calls Harry up to the table, and sends him into the other room with Cedric, Fleur, and Krum. Nice little team effort in deciding what has to be done there. (GF17)
Madame Maxine suggests Dumbledore may have made a mistake with the age line. Dumbledore said it was possible, and then McGonagall immediately says, "Dumbledore, you know perfectly well you did not make a mistake!" Such faith... such devotion... (GF17)
Dumbledore puts Ron, Hermione, Cho, and Gabrielle into an enchanted sleep for the Second Task in her office. (GF27)
I'm not quite sure if this could qualify as a shipper moment, but here it is anyway... Dumbledore asks McGonagall to stand guard over Barty Crouch Jr., and when he sees her and in the hospital wing, he glances at Fudge for a second and then demands an explanation from her. Here, they get in the closest thing I've ever seen to an argument in the books between these two - he starts reprimanding her for leaving BCJ, and she is so ticked at Fudge that she takes it out on Dumbledore and yells at him. Then Fudge butts in, and she and Fudge yell at each other for a few paragraphs. Dumbledore and Fudge then talk about BCJ's connection to Voldemort for a minute, and when Dumbledore says Voldemort is back and Fudge doesn't believe him, he says, "As Minerva and Severus have doubtless told you, we heard Barty Crouch confess..." Now that the little misunderstanding about the dementor has been cleared up, he has apparently regained all his faith in McGonagall and her ability to function. (GF36)
Since their little fight was rather depressing and I don't want to end it on a low note, I'm going to comment on some things from the movie of Philosopher's / Sorcerer's Stone, in which the amazing talents of Sir Richard Harris and Dame Maggie Smith brought our favorite pair to life.
Once again, he immediately knows that she's the cat, but neither one of them acts surprised.
When Hagrid comes in for a landing on Sirius's flying motorcycle, it looks like they're standing pretty close together. Then, when we get a frontal shot, we see that the reason for this is because she's holding on to his arm.
When Harry, Ron, and Hermione think that Snape is going to go after the stone, they go to McGonagall to ask where Dumbledore is, and of course she knows...

Moments from "The Order of the Phoenix"
collected by Jestana and BryteTwilight
McGonagall gets mad when Umbridge interrupts Dumbledore's opening speech. This is probably just a respect thing, but she's the only teacher to be mention twice as angry, so... (OotP 11)
In OotP we begin to see more of Dumbledore's serious side and McGonagall's old-softie side, meaning that they fit together even better than before :-)
McGonagall *extremely dislikes* Umbridge, as Umbridge is messing around with Dumbledore's setup. Loyalty :-)
Angelina complains to McGonagall about the fact that Umbridge won’t let the Gryffindor Quidditch team re-form and assumes McGonagall went to Dumbledore about it. Umbridge confirms this right before she bans Harry and the twins for fighting. - Reminds me of McGonagall getting the first-year rule bent back in PS/SS. (OotP 18)
Dumbledore doesn’t seem to mind McGonagall interrupting him the night Harry had the dream about Mr. Weasley. - Dumbledore trusts McGonagall to wake the other Weasley children and stall Umbridge. (OotP 22)
After the article about the mass breakout from Azkaban comes out, Harry looks up at the staff table to see their reactions to the news and notices that Dumbledore and McGonagall are deep in conversation, much to Umbridge’s displeasure. - JKR mentions the fact that they’re talking twice, so there *must* be some significance to it. (OotP 25)
McGonagall had to have known Dumbledore wouldn’t let Trelawny be thrown out of Hogwarts, even if she had been sacked; otherwise she wouldn’t have been so sure of herself when she was comforting Trelawny. - Perhaps she knew what Dumbledore’s next move would be even before Trelawny was sacked. (OotP 26)
When Umbridge takes Harry up to Dumbledore’s office, McGonagall is standing beside Dumbledore’s chair, as if to offer her support. - standing together through thick and thin. *le sigh* (OotP 27)
McGonagall wants to stand by Dumbledore, but he essentially tells her that she needs to stay at Hogwarts. McGonagall’s next priority is to protect the students. - If you ask me, I’d say Dumbledore wanted McGonagall to stay behind to make sure Umbridge wouldn’t go too far. (OotP 27)
When Fudge insinuates that Dumbledore won’t be back, McGonagall chooses to disbelieve him. - She knows Dumbledore still has a few tricks up his sleeve. (Ootp 27)
During the career advice scene, Umbridge comments that Harry’s chances of becoming an Auror are about the same as Dumbledore returning to Hogwarts and McGonagall replies that Harry has a very good chance of becoming an Auror, then. - Such loyalty. *wipes away tear* (OotP 29)
Overall, there wasn’t much of a chance to see AD/MM interaction in this book because Dumbledore deliberately kept his distance from Harry. However, I’m sure there was plenty of interaction when Harry couldn’t see them. ;-) I wouldn’t be surprised if Dumbledore managed to visit McGonagall when she was in St. Mungo’s and McGonagall probably reported to Dumbledore once she returned to Hogwarts.
Moments from the movie "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"
The least shippy book, makes for a movie without many moments, but at least two possible could be found:
- During the fateful Quidditch-match, was there a flash of holding hands to be seen, when Harry flew by the teacher's stands? At least, it was the first time our couple sat together during a game.
- Minerva just can't speak about anything without referring to Albus, can't she? Why else would mention him to Madam Rosmerta and Minister Fudge at the Three Broomsticks? Somehow we think, the barmistress and the Minister had to consciously refrain from rolling their eyes.
