I was thinking about kids in ADMM fics the other day and was wondering what other people thought about them being portrayed in fanfic as having kids. So here's a poll!

Yeah, I like it when they hae kids. I mean, I don't think it's gotta have anything to do with the plot, but every now and again it's great. ~mmadlyinlove~

Oh, I love fics with kids! They're just adorable. Especially the "family" ones. Great.

I chose 'I wouldn't seek it out, but it's not a turn-off', but thinking on it, I'm actually less likely to read a fic where they have kids than not. I find it difficult to read fics with Albus and Min in an established relationship, since I'm more curious about how they might have got together, especially since it may very well be unlikely they're together at all. It's the angst in me, it's taking over!

There are times when ADMM haveing kids is great, I usually prefer it if the kids are grown and only mentioned as a subplot to the actually story between Albus and Minerva. I think that it's become cliche for the story to involve her actually getting pregnant and having babies...(it's a problem in other fandoms as well *glares at BSG fandom*)
That said, I've written the "ADMM have a baby" story line myself...I just think it gets old fast.

'I don't mind unless they take over the story'
Meaning really, I prefer them without but I like some of the MMAD kids stories but I'm much more interested in the MMADness.

I chose "I don't mind unless they take over the story" - I'm really not interested in stories where their children are older and at the centre of the story, I much prefer those fluffy stories centred around just the two of them. That said I like the occasional one where they do have children but mainly to see their respective reactions to it and to give a different angle to their characters. As it is I'm writing such as story myself at the moment.

Actually, having said that, I quite fancy writing an ADMM kids one, only mine would be total angst, I couldn't write it fluffy! There would be too much potential for things to go wrong.
I think that's why I normally dislike ADMM kiddie fics - because they tend to ignore the 'how to' (lol) and leap straight into tooth-rotting family perfection, and how many of us come from dysfunctional family backgrounds?
Conflict makes for a gripping fic after all!

I don't really car either way. What does annoy me, however is Athena Dumbleodre.
I have seen her so many times.
I think she's an alien. An evil alien. Sent from Mars to eat my Bumblebee's brains out.

LOL! That's very funny! ;D Yeah -- I guess that "Athena," which probably seemed like a good name the first several times it was used, got old rather quickly. That's the trouble with a lot of good fanfic ideas, actually . . . they're good the first few times, but after that, they usually feel old, recycled, and trite. IMHO, that's a biggish problem in SSHG ficdom. Anyhoo! I'll confess here that I prefer stories without any ADMM kids, and will rarely read one where the point of the story is them having kids (there are exceptions, of course), so my answer was "I wouldn't seek it out, but it's not a turn-off." A more accurate answer may have been, "Hate kids, but will keep reading if I like the fic," except I don't feel quite that strongly about it. I just like MMADness "neat" with no kids. It also feels quite AU for them to have kids. Not that AU is bad . . . . hey, all fanfic is essentially AU, anyway! *grin*

I much prefer ADMM fanfic without the kids, but I have written one with them having a child. I guess it's okay every now and then, especially if the child is younger and doesn't take over the whole plot of the story.
... Just my two and a half cents. ;D
Oh, and I hate when ADMM have children and aren't married.

Commenting on the last option: If Albus and Minerva had a totally chaste relationship, I don't think there would be much for us to write about. (Except for a few of the awesome angst writers, but since I happen to be a fan of fluff...) Besides, where's the fun in that?
Kids: I don't mind the ADMM kids so much, usually because they're just sidenotes to the story, and because these authors are more likely to give them actual personalities and not make them Mary Sue etc. (or Hermione Granger, or Harry Potter, which I hate). I want to read about Albus & Minerva, but if they happen to have a kid, that's okay. (And I confess to having added one in a fic just for fun. It's much more fun to write those kids than read them, I think, unfortunately.)

I have to say I can take or leave kids in fanfiction. I don't mind them if it's comedy (though it's a rare fic that's got MMAD kids and is funny. I think I can count them on one hand actually). And if I even skim another 'Minerva and Albus have twins called Apollo and Athena; I really will scream. It's just become so cliche and few are well-written. Even the name Diana is beginning to get on my nerves; but that might be because of my looming exams - everything irritates me at the moment.
Anyway, speaking as a rabid Minerva fan; I think I self-insert with her too much. Do I like kids? Yes. Do I want kids? Yes. Do I teach kids? Yes Do I have kids. No. That pretty much sums it up.

It's really okay unless they start taking over the story. Like anything else, if it's well-written and interesting I will read it.
I just love the idea of them falling in love so late in life, and I think that it's really much cuter at times than the idea of them being in an established relationship (although I don't much mind either way ;D)

I put "I wouldn't seek it out, but it's not a turn off." But I prefer ones with just them, at the age they are in the books. As tabbycat said, I love the ones where they fall in love later in life, it's much sweeter somehow.

I love stories where Min and Albus have kids. It is sweet to see their parental side and I think they're so cute.

I don't mind fics where they have kids, as long as the kids are of the grown-up kind. Its only my opinion, but it bothers me a little bit when they have really small children, because Albus is meant to be like 150, and the idea that he'd have small children is....strange to me. But that's just my opinion, and I hope I haven't offended anybody else's views, I really didn't mean to.

It's probably just my real-life prejudices, but I can't stand fics with kids. I really don't have the patience for children, so I do both parties a favour and stay away from them.
In fics I just can't see them having children. Plus the cliché names annoy the hell out of me.
But I have truthfully seen a few fics with kids that I liked. I just don't remember where they are...
In regards to the last option, not even Minerva is that tight-laced.

...But, then again, I always find original characters disconcerting. I find that I don't care about them, as I don't know them, and the story begins before the author makes me care for them.
And it's worse when they take over the story.

I guess I'm one of the few who can take them or leave them. It's not a huge turn off unless the fic is poorly written or if some things just seem too off the wall, if you get my drift.
Yes, naming their children Diana, Athena, and Apollo is quite annoying. Athena really bugs me. In my mind, you are essentially naming the kid Minerva as well. But that's just me. Considering the fact that I'm a name nerd, I like searching for unique, original names. I often look at my family tree. We have some very original names. Even then, though, I think very simple names suit their kids. I would love to see a fic, if they named their child "Cameron," since it means "crooked nose."
I also think the motif of them having twins is getting quite old. In a lot of stories where they have kids, they *always* have twins. Why??? I think I have read one fic where they have triplets, and even then it wasn't very well written, nor was it ever finished I think. Minerva seemed very OOC. I also read another where she had quints, as a connection to her Animagus as a tabby cat. It was interesting, but also kind of poorly written. It was more of a parody, at least it seemed that way.
That said, I guess I should also mention I am currently writing a shorter story where they have a baby, but I wouldn't consider it the main focus. It may be for a short while, but in the whole context, I don't consider it that way.
So there's my nickel and dime input!

Yes, Athena is just one of those things that makes me hurl my head against the wall (it's got blood on it and is kind of dented now, just FYTMI). That and the word "husband." I don't know why, but as soon as someone's like "Minerva looked at her husband" my head just goes WHAM!
Which doesn't really make any sense, but that's what happens. It just bothers me.

Nah, I completely agree. If I even read a sentence with 'husband' in it spoken on Minerva's behalf I hit the back button like my life depends on it. Totally over-the-top but... urghh for lack of a better word.
As for Athena... it really, really, depends on the skill of the author. Apollo though... *bares teeth* I don't know why I'm so adverse to the name but it makes me want to hurl something hard and heavy... and blunt for that matter.
