Chapter One: Spirits
Albus Dumbledore scanned the crowd with a quiet sigh one June day in 1951. The McDougal estate was crowded with the most prominent members of the Wizarding World and their families. Coming to this occasion always bored and depressed Albus, so he was looking for a way to make a discreet exit when a young woman caught his eye.
She was standing with three other women, but she wasn’t talking to them. She was staring off into the crowd much like he had done only moments earlier. She had a unique quality to her, besides being beautiful, and though he could not tell you how he knew, Albus was sure she had spirit. The same spirit in a young woman he used to know.
Albus watched her intently for a few minutes before he silently made his way toward her. Taking his time in approaching her afforded him a few more minutes to watch her, and come up with a decent introduction. The young woman was so intent in her screening of the crowd she did not notice Albus standing to her left.
“Nice day for a party, is it not?”
The young woman’s hand flew to her heart as she quickly turned to look at Albus, “Never sneak up on someone!”
Albus successfully contained his chuckle, but his eyes shimmered with mirth. “My apologies, for I did not mean to scare you. May I inquire as to what you were watching so intently?”
She surveyed Albus carefully before answering, “Direct your gaze to the northeast and the patch of trees, do you see them?”
“Yes,” was Albus’ simple reply.
“The largest trees, the one on the right most ring of the bunch, find that one. When you do tell me if you see what looks to be a small child or not.”
Albus gazed intently at the trees, and before too long spotted what seemed to be a little girl on a very high branch. “It looks as if there is a little girl, rather high up in that tree.”
“Good to know I’m not losing my mind. Emily, Laura, and Sarah could not see her. Oh, forgive me those were the three women I was standing with a moment before you arrived.”
“I see; I hope I did not scare them off?”
“No, you did not.”
Silence reigned down on the pair as the woman returned her gaze toward the trees, and Albus wondered if he should not leave her alone or go and get the child.
“Yes, it is a nice day for a party,” the woman spoke before Albus could.
“I-I beg your pardon?” He was a little thrown off by her remark, having forgotten his earlier question.
“You asked me earlier if it was a nice day for a party, and my answer is yes though I do not enjoy such large gatherings as this one.”
“Nor I, I’m afraid.” Albus smiled as he gazed on the young woman, she definitely had spirit.
“That is surprising. One would think that the famous Albus Dumbledore would enjoy these parties very much.”
Albus inwardly cringed, “I’m afraid I’ve never met the fellow. Though if I did I would tell him to trim his beard, I think it is a bit long.”
“Oh I don’t know, it adds something to his character I think.” The young woman replied with a smile.
Albus lifted his hand to his beard, looking down at it as well. Pulling out his wand he transformed the beard into a shorter one, “You mean this doesn’t work?”
“Perhaps, but not to wear all the time.” The young woman had completely removed her gaze from the trees, and was watching Albus with high amusement.
Noting this Albus changed his beard into a goatee, only to receive a reprimand, and various different lengths before settling with the original state of the facial accessory.
“I do believe that works best on you, Albus. May I call you Albus?”
“Please do, and since you know my name may I even the score and know yours?”
The young woman smiled, “Why do you wish to know it, Albus?”
“I’m just looking for a friend, my dear, just looking for a friend.” There was a flicker of sadness in Albus’ eyes that the woman did not miss. Perhaps a friend is what he needed, “Minerva McGonagall.”
“Well it is a pleasure to meet you, Minerva. I do believe you are about to be dragged away from this old man. I see three women fast approaching.”
Indeed three young women of Minerva’s age were approaching their final friend, bent on being introduced to the famous Albus Dumbledore. Arriving shortly after Albus spotted them Minerva introduced each in turn.
“This is Emily Gauche,” Minerva said indicating a petite woman with long blonde hair and bright blue eyes, “This is Sarah McDougal,” the tallest of the four she had deep auburn hair and intensely dark brown eyes, “and this is Laura Cunningham,” the last of the four was average in height with long wavy brown hair and blue eyes.
“It is very nice to meet all of you. I will no longer wonder where England houses her most beautiful women. I shall simply come here. Your father seems to be beckoning me away, Ms. McDougal. It has been a pleasure meeting all of you. Good day, Minerva.”
Minerva’s friends all turned to look at her as Albus had singled her out, but she was still watching Albus. “Albus!”
“Yes, my dear?” The wizard asked turning around.
“How long will you be staying in the area?”
“Two more days before I must return to Hogwarts.”
“There is an excellent tea shop in town, meet me there tomorrow at three?” Minerva asked surprising her friends at her forwardness.
“It would be my honor,” Albus answered bowing slightly before making his departure.
“What was that about?” Laura asked suggestively as soon as Albus was out of hearing range.
“He needs a friend,” was Minerva’s short answer.
“Yes, but what kind of friend?” Laura nudged on raising her eyebrows to compliment her town of voice.
Minerva turned on her friend quickly, “Not that kind, though I wouldn’t mind dating him, but not because he is famous. He is sad that is all.”
“No doubt because of his fiancée,” Sarah added assuredly, like one who speaks not entirely of what they know but sure they are correct.
“I heard he vowed to never love another woman, isn’t that romantic?” Laura asked in a dreamy voice.
Minerva had returned her gaze to the trees, where she no longer saw a child, so she returned her gaze to her friends. “Yes and no. I see how the sentiment is, but what if he finds love again, perhaps greater than hers, and he forbids it for himself. Then he is responsible for the broken hearts of two people, and not his own.”
“You speak as if you are sure he will,” Sarah replied as she looked out over the crowd hunting for a young man that had caught her eye earlier in the afternoon.
“No, merely suggesting a possible outcome of his vow, should it be true.” Minerva replied with no trace of emotion on her face.
Emily was the only one of the women that had not joined in on the discussion, because she was far too busy watching Minerva’s face. The four of them were very close, but Emily and Minerva were the best of friends and she knew her friend well. It would be interesting to see how the tea tomorrow would go, for no doubt Minerva would tell her most details. Besides just a feeling it was the intensity of Minerva’s face as she had gazed out at Albus’ retreating form that made Emily think her dear friend found Mr. Dumbledore to be more than most men that approached her.
*
Later that evening Albus returned to his rooms at the local inn, and smiled as he dressed for bed. Looking at the picture frame on his nightstand he gazed upon his love’s face. “She has spirit like you Olivia, and I’m sure she will make a great friend. You would like her I think, but no need to fret I still love you.” Albus spoke aloud to the frame before climbing into bed.

Oh my, I can see where this is going. I hope he's not too stupid about the whole thing. Wonderful beginning, I liked the style and tone of their conversation at the party and that you gave her new friends and not the usual suspects. Update soon, Pal.

Chapter Two: Tea and Things
Albus combed his beard thoroughly as he prepared for his afternoon meeting with Minerva. He had gotten up early to wander the town in hopes of discovering many of its secrets. However all he was able to find was the tea shop Minerva had been referring to, but he thought that was the most important thing to learn.
Albus surveyed himself in the mirror once more before turning to smile lovingly at Olivia’s photo, and without a word to his departed love he headed off in direction of the shop.
*
“Minerva you have to wear the blue dress,” Laura ordered as she hunted for the particular piece of clothing in her closet.
“I think it is a bit daring for an afternoon tea, Laura,” Emily chided as she searched for a red one she had seen Minerva wear before.
“She should show some cleavage, I’m sure the man has seen some before. Besides it is June Emily she shouldn’t wear that red one.”
Minerva sat at her vanity brushing her long black hair as her friends argued over which dress she should wear for her afternoon tea with Albus. Satisfied with the shine in her hair Minerva applied very little make up before standing.
“I already know which dress I’m wearing, so you two should stop arguing.”
“Which are you wearing,” they asked in unison from the doorway of her closet.
“Neither of the two you have chosen. Laura that dress is too revealing for a first time tea, and Emily I don’t think the red is the best for three in the afternoon and in June.”
“So, what are you wearing then?” Sarah asked. “You are wearing something,” she teased.
Minerva sent her a glare, “If you will give me some space I can put it on and then you will see.
In a few minutes Minerva re-emerged in a sky blue dress that hit just below her knee, and accentuated her waist. The neckline was a square that stopped before any hint of cleavage could be seen, and the sleeves traveled down her slender arms stopping just beyond her elbow.
Laura was the first to speak, “Honey you may not be showing cleavage but the way that dress hugs your curves you will still knock him out.”
“You think?” Minerva asked adjusting herself in the mirror.
“Are you kidding me? Of course you will.” Sarah said going up to hug her friend.
“Now listen you three I’m going into this just wanting to be his friend, and if something else develops I’m sure I’ll be fine with that as well.” With that Minerva left her friends, and headed to her tea date with Albus.
*
Albus and Minerva arrived at the shop within seconds of each other, and smiled in greeting.
“I hope the place wasn’t too hard to find,” Minerva said as Albus opened the door for her to enter the old establishment.
“Not at all, and I did some exploring this morning so I would be sure to find it.”
“Did you find any of our town’s secrets, it has many you know,” Minerva replied as they stood inside waiting to be shown to a clear table.
Albus’ eyes took on an extra twinkle that Minerva found very endearing, “I was unable to find any secrets. Do you know of anyone that might be willing to divulge a few to this old man?”
“I just might be able to come up with someone by the time we finish.” Just then Albus and Minerva were led to a small table near one of the rear windows.
Their afternoon meeting was progressing wonderfully, especially having learned each shared a love for Transfiguration and chess, until various townspeople kept interrupting them to shake hands with Albus. Minerva was getting peeved at the constant interruptions, and Albus was not particularly fond of them either.
“My dear do you think we will be able to finish or should I just set up an autographing table right here?”
Albus’ humor did much to improve Minerva’s mood, that was, until a good friend of her father’s approached them.
“Minerva, introduce me to your friend, will you?”
“Mr. Jacobsen this is Albus Dumbledore, Albus this is Fredrick Jacobsen an old friend of my father’s.”
“Nice to meet you sir, are you enjoying your tea?”
“Yes, this is the best place in all of the United Kingdom to get tea or that is what they pay me to say,” the elder gentleman joked. “I’m here with my wife and our children. I was hoping I could meet you yesterday, but with such a large crowd at Michael’s it wasn’t possible so I was happy to see you here with our Minerva.”
Placing his hand on Minerva’s shoulder Fredrick continued, “You have good taste sir, she is the most beautiful young lady in the whole town I’d wager. Many a young men would like to know how you got her so fast.”
Albus looked at Minerva to find her blushing, and sending Fredrick dangerous glares that he was studiously annoying; out of practice Albus was sure.
“Yes she is very beautiful, Mr. Jacobsen. I imagine she is well sought after.”
“Naturally though she’s a picky lass, and quite the temper. I’d watch out if I were you.” With only a few more words passed between them the gentleman left to leave Albus alone with Minerva.
“Well you seem to be done with your tea, why don’t we leave and perhaps procure me a tour guide?”
Minerva only nodded her head, choosing to unleash her tongue when they stepped outside.
“You enjoyed that didn’t you?” Minerva asked dangerously when they were away from prying eyes and intent ears.
“I did. The tea was superb, and your company delightful.”
“Flattery will not work with me Albus Dumbledore! You should not have egged him on.”
‘She does indeed have spirit,’ Albus thought to himself as he led her further down the street. “It was harmless Minerva, and why do compliments upset you so?”
“They were compliments meant to embarrass, and nothing more.”
“Well I apologize; do you think you can still find me a tour guide?”
Minerva eyed Albus carefully before caving, “Oh, alright. What do you wish to see?”
“I don’t know; you said the town had secrets show me one.”

Albus could see the wheels turning in her head before she turned east pulling him along. Five minutes later Minerva was leading Albus down a dark alleyway that appeared to be deserted. Using her wand to shed some light Minerva found the door she was looking through, and with the right incantation it sprung open.
“Minerva, what is this place?” Albus asked after he had stepped through the door and closed it.
“Well this used to be an underground club where men could escape their wives and children around the turn of the century. The door used to be hidden by a well placed charm. Not too many bad things went on here, mostly drinking, gambling and the like. It was discovered and shut down around 1911 when one woman, Allison Ball, followed her husband one night when he disappeared after supper. It is believe the family had an invisibility cloak that she used, but till this day it is not certain. Sneaking through the door with him she was not all that upset at what she saw until she noticed he had disappeared into a side room.
It is important to note that few of the men used this place as a meeting place for their mistresses, but a few did, and her husband John was one of them. Coming upon him and his mistress engaged in…let us say the least of innocent situations she killed them both, and thus the club was discovered.”
Albus looked around the deserted room and noticed a bar, and various tables that were overturned. “Have the men relocated or given up on a club?” Albus asked running his hand over the bar.
“No one is really sure but they don’t disappear that often so many are inclined to say no. My mother likes to brag that my father never went to the club, whether she is right or not I don’t know but we don’t suggest that she is not or my father receives an awful grilling.”
“So I take it you inherited your temper from your mother?” Albus added cutting his eyes at Minerva.
“You operate under the assumption my father doesn’t have one.”
“Are you saying he does?”
“No, just suggesting he could.” They shared a knowing smile, and left the deserted club to seek the sunshine. They walked back toward the center of town talking very little, but rather enjoying the summer day. All too soon they were back where they needed to separate.
“I had a wonderful time this afternoon, Minerva. Would it be possible to see you one more time before I left?” Albus asked hesitantly.
“I had fun as well, even with being embarrassed. I would like to see you one more time, Albus, any ideas?”
“Have you ever ridden a bike?”
Minerva’s eyebrow rose at his question, and she answered him slowly, “Yes, why do you ask?”
“Well I have not been able to see much of the country side, and I was thinking I had not been on a bike in awhile.”
“Hmm well we don’t own any,-”
“Not a problem, I am a wizard after all.” Albus smiled excited about being able to see the country side with his new friend.
“Ok, but if I get sore you are getting hexed, understood?”
“Yes, ma’am, I’ll meet you outside of town, southern most, at one tomorrow afternoon.”
*
Minerva returned to her small home pleased with the day’s events, but not sure where Albus was planning to take things. She didn’t have long to ponder on her thoughts before she was bombarded by her friends.
“Have you stayed here all this time?” she asked heading toward her room to change.
“Of course, you wouldn’t expect us to leave without getting the details did you?” Laura spoke up rising from her chair.
“Not much to tell, we had tea, Fredrick Jacobsen was there to embarrass me on my looks and Albus joined in, I showed him the old club,-”
“The men’s?” Emily asked putting Today Transfiguration down.
“Yes, then I agreed to go biking with him tomorrow so he can see the country side.”
“You agreed to go biking?” Sarah chimed in sharing a knowing look with Laura.
“Yes, is that wrong?”
“No just the last time I checked Ms. McGonagall hated to bike.”
“Yes, well he so wanted to see the country side and you should have seen the way his eyes sparkled when he mentioned the bike.”
“So you do like him.”
“We are just friends, and he doesn’t appear to want anything more. Now you three quit badgering me.”
The three women in the living room all shared knowing looks with one another, and each secretly hoped Minerva had finally found the man she was looking for and that Albus wouldn’t do anything to mess it up.

Chapter Three: Making Plans
Promptly at one o’clock Minerva met Albus at the south end of town wearing dress slacks popular at that time, a short sleeved blouse, and her hair was up in a French twist. As she arrived Minerva couldn’t help but laugh at Albus’ appearance. Dressed as a muggle he had cropped his hair and beard.
“I thought we decided to keep your beard long,” Minerva yelled as she approached.
“Well it will fly about and get all tangled, and if we meet any muggles I won’t get stares.”
“I hate to ruin this for you, Albus, but a man your age on a bicycle might get some stares no matter what you are wearing.”
“Undoubtedly because the most beautiful young woman in the town is riding with me,” Albus replied looking up from the bike to grin at Minerva.
It took Minerva a moment to respond considering that was the first time he had complimented her appearance when there wasn’t a Mr. Jacobsen to force him into it. Finally she replied, “Well I don’t know about that; I think the other girls are much prettier than I. In what direction will we be heading?”
“I thought we could just go straight out, and then maybe take a turn to lead us somewhere new or something. Do you have any suggestions?”
“No that sounds fine. These bikes are nice by the way.” Minerva complemented as she got on hers balancing it with her outstretched legs.
“It has been rumored that I can do great things with my wand.” Albus replied with an air of false pomposity.
Minerva almost coughed over what he said, because Laura had said something of the same effect when discussing him last night, of course she was speaking of a different wand; one Minerva wouldn’t mind ‘testing out’ but she kept that to herself.
A few minutes later Albus and Minerva were off at a decent speed enjoying the scenery, and discussing various topics when Albus noticed Minerva didn’t seem to be working as hard as he was. Her feet seemed to be peddling, but something was up.
“You must bike a lot, Minerva; you seem to be doing this speed with ease.”
“I haven’t biked in ages, really. I guess it is something you don’t forget,” Minerva replied turning to smile at Albus before returning her gaze to the road ahead.
“You charmed the bike, didn’t you,” Albus asked after studying her bike intently for a few more minutes.
“Perhaps,” Minerva replied rolling her eyes in Albus’ general direction.
“Cheater.”
“I most certainly am not! There is no rule indicating I cannot charm the bike to do the work for me, and this way I can truly enjoy the ride.” Minerva replied sharply setting her jaw as she gave Albus a quick glare.
Albus fell silent and studied his companion, with careful glances in front of him so he wouldn’t fall. His eyes focused on her face: petite with beautiful green eyes, long eyelashes, and a bony nose but not unattractive, and lips that he thought were the perfect size. One quick glance back at the road did not afford Albus a clear picture of the rock lying in the middle of his path, so while he gazed at the graceful line of Minerva’s neck his bike hit the rock and sent him flying in the air.
“Albus!” Minerva immediately ended her charm on the bike, but wasn’t in enough time to soften his fall. Running to him Minerva smoothed his hair out of his face as he struggled to sit up.
“You have a cut on your face, Albus. Hold still and let me heal it.” Minerva ordered as she prepared to help him. Albus sat quietly as she applied the healing charm, and though of how he was going to explain why he fell.
“Are you hurt anywhere else,” she asked when done.
“A little sore on my shoulder, but other than that just my pride.” He replied standing up, brining Minerva with him.
“It’s ok, do you want to get back on the bikes or rest for a bit?” Minerva asked tenderly.
“Why don’t we rest in that field right over there,” Albus pointed to his left indicating a bit of empty land less than eight hundred meters down the road, “we can eat lunch.”
Once settled they spent the rest of the afternoon conversing on transfiguration, and then playing a spirited game of chess from a set Albus had whipped up right on the spot.
“Checkmate!” Minerva said happily as she looked up at Albus to smile.
“Well don’t get too happy I’ll beat you next time,” Albus replied vanishing the set.
“Next time?” Minerva asked apprehensively. She knew he left for Hogwarts the next morning, and she wasn’t sure when she’d see him next.
“Well I make my home at Hogwarts, but I am not obligated to stay there during the summer so we can meet again…I mean if you would like that.” Albus replied fingering the top button of his shirt.
“I’d like that Albus. I go back to work on Monday, but evenings and weekends are up for grabs unless I have something else planned.”
Albus thought for a minute before looking back up at Minerva, “Would you want to meet next week? Maybe some place else, and provide for a little variety?” Albus suggested.
Minerva’s face positively glowed at his suggestion. She could see him, hopefully, most weekends and get a little traveling in as well. “That sounds wonderful Albus, and the girls and I don’t have anything planned for that Saturday, so how bout then? Where do you want to meet?”
“Well there is always London, but I know we have both frequent the area.”
“Hmm, have you been to Windsor lately? We would have to go as muggles of course, but I haven’t been to the castle since I was young. It might be fun.”
“I have not been in quite some time either; that sounds fine. Can you meet at ten just outside the village?”
Making the final arrangements Albus and Minerva resumed their riding until having to depart only promising to meet the next weekend.
*
Minerva returned home smiling softly to herself, but she walked into her living room only to find her friends there.
“You were out for a long time, Minerva.” Sarah stated elongating the ‘long.’
“Don’t any of you have homes of your own to go to?” Minerva sighed as she closed the door.
“Oh touchy are we? That must mean you want to mull over this afternoon, must have been good.” Laura replied eagerly leaning forward ready to receive a detailed account.
“I thought you would have had a date tonight,” Minerva replied trying to change the topic of conversation.
“Don’t even think about changing the subject…we won’t to know what happened.”
“Well he fell off his bike,” Minerva started but was easily angered by Sarah and Laura’s laughter. “It isn’t funny! He cut his face, and his shoulder is sore. He really could have hurt himself,” Minerva huffed crossing her arms.
The girls stopped their laughing immediately, “This is very serious if you are already that defensive. Your loyalty is earned, and you have only known him a couple of days. Will you meet again?” Laura asked in all sincerity.
Walking to sit next to Emily on the couch she sighed, “We are meeting in two weeks to go to Windsor Castle for the day. I think he wants to meet frequently, but I still think it is just to be friends.”
Emily sent an admonishing look to Laura before she could speak and chose to speak herself, “Perhaps he is telling himself it is to be friends, but really he feels more. He did seek you out, and there were a lot of women at the party.”
“True, but he hasn’t made any moves on a romantic front so I don’t want to get my hopes up yet.”
“He wants to see you on the weekend, that has to mean something,” Emily added softly in hopes of reassuring her friend.
“I was happy that he did that, and he said I was beautiful but it might have been because of what Mr. Jacobsen said the other day.”
“What was he doing when he fell off his bike,” Emily asked curious.
Minerva blushed slightly, “I think he was looking at me, but I’m not sure.” Emily exchanged smiles with Laura and Sarah before Minerva got up to take a quick bath and join them for dinner which Emily promised to make.
*
Albus walked slowly into his room, still sore from his accident. Walking past his bed to his bathroom he stood underneath the hot water for a long time letting it cascade down on his shoulder hoping it would help. Thinking back on the day he smiled: he had really enjoyed himself and Minerva was really sweet to him.
He hadn’t been to Windsor in so long, and he thought going with someone as intelligent as Minerva would make it more enjoyable as they could enjoy the history together. He would have to contact a friend of his at a University to give him pointers on where to really pay attention in the castle and where the very interesting pieces were.
‘I wonder if we will stay till dinner.’ Albus thought to himself. Dinner would be nice; he knew he wouldn’t have any obligations but Minerva was young so she might have an engagement later so he decided to wait and play it out.
Albus fell into his bed thinking about his weekend with Minerva, and nothing else.

Chapter Four: Knowledgable Escapes
The appointed Saturday arrived none too soon for Albus and Minerva, and it was with excitement that they met each other at ten a.m. outside the village.
“Are you ready for a fun filled day of history,” Albus asked jovially as Minerva approached him.
“Always, and this castle is particularly beautiful I think. I’m looking forward to seeing St. George’s Chapel, do you mind if we visit?” Minerva asked as they blended in with the rest of the crowd heading toward the entrance to the great establishment.
“Of course not I figured we would stay as long as we can, and just decide things as they come. I don’t have anything to rush back to, unless you do of course.” Albus added somewhat disheartened at the thought of her having plans for the rest of the evening.
“No I don’t have any plans except whatever I do with you today, so it doesn’t matter to me either.” Minerva replied smiling up at Albus thankful she had him all to herself for the entire day.
Before too long they were happily caught up in the architecture of the old structure, and the history itself.
“It says here,” read Minerva from the brochure, “that it is the largest inhabited castle in the world. They should see Hogwarts.” She added under her breath so only Albus could hear.
“Would you want to live in a place this large?” Albus asked.
“Well sometimes I’ve thought about teaching at Hogwarts, so I wouldn’t mind living there because I always loved the castle as a student but for my permanent home? I would prefer something smaller and cozier. A nice cottage would suit me, if I had some land to roam about. What would your house be if you did not live at Hogwarts?”
“Well there is the Dumbledore manor, but I would tend to agree with you. A cottage to just get away, but perhaps that is because I often wish I could get away.”
Minerva lifted her hand to give Albus’ arm a gentle squeeze, “How do you wish to get away?” At his confusion she elaborated, “Do you wish to hide and shut the world out; do you want a mental escape, a time for a bit of piece?”
“All of it.” He replied softly as they entered the castle ready to start the actual tour.
“Well then consider this an escape; I’m the only one who knows who you really are.” Minerva replied hoping to make him feel better.
“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?” Albus teased lightening the mood.
“A good thing of course, unless I have to remind you who is boss then I’ll need to get tough.” Minerva replied trying her best not to smile.
“It won’t work Ms. McGonagall; I see the makings of a smile around the corners of your mouth.”
“You see no such thing. You lie, sir. Do you cheat and steal as well?”
“Never.”
Minerva fell silent half studying the armor before them, and half thinking Albus was wrong when he say he did not steal. Against her better judgment Minerva was aware of how close he was to stealing her heart, and even more aware of how he did not want to steal it or did not which to acknowledge the theft. Deciding to focus solely on their budding friendship she shunned the depressing thoughts to the darkest recesses of her brain, and heart.
As the day wore on Albus and Minerva noticed a small group of people that seemed to follow them about the castle as they examined Queen Mary’s Doll House, the State departments lending most of their time to the magnificent pieces of art, and the various pieces of armor; mostly because Albus and Minerva seemed to emanate knowledge whenever they opened their mouths to discuss what was before them.
Albus was thoroughly enjoying his time with Minerva, for never had he met someone that could challenge his wit as well as she could. If he knew a fact she knew another, and he often found himself staring at her in wonder. How could someone so young know so much? Of course he properly forgot all he knew at that age; the memory’s retrieval is fickle. As he watched her explain an historical fact relating to King Charles I, he noted that Olivia never really shared his thirst for knowledge and Minerva did whole heartedly.
“Albus, Albus!” Minerva called a few times finally getting his attention.
“Oh, yes dear did you say something?”
“Yes I was asking if you had seen the shirt that Charles was beheaded in; I have looked as have many of these people and no one has found it. What were you thinking about?”
“No I have not seen it either. Oh nothing important. Carry on.”
Minerva gave him a quizzical look before turning back to the armor, and her rapt audience to finish her thoughts. In a little while they found themselves heading toward St. George’s Chapel, and Minerva quietly slipped her hand in the crook of Albus’ arm.
“This should be beautiful if memory serves me correctly. I do hope we can loose our little audience though,” Minerva added dropping her voice, “I feel like I haven’t spent much time with you today as odd as that sounds.”
“I was thinking perhaps you could indulge an old man, and join him for dinner. I saw several pubs and restaurants in the village this morning.”
“Dinner sounds wonderful Albus.”
Later than Albus would have liked he and Minerva were sitting down to dinner. He had thoroughly enjoyed talking to her during the hour wait, but he was very hungry.
“Now Albus just remember to chew before you swallow. I’m not sure I want to oblivate all these nice people when you start to choke, because I will not try helping you the muggle way.” Minerva teased knowing full well how hungry he was, his stomach having made it quite clear earlier in the evening.
“I didn’t think you heard,” Albus replied sheepishly looking down at the table. When their food arrived Albus did indeed chew, but Minerva teased him that she swore for some bites it was only once or twice. Their dinner progressed nicely, and each was thankful that they never seemed to run out of things to say or discuss.
Walking through the village as they were preparing to leave Minerva thanked Albus for the good time she had, and pondered as to if he wished to do this again.
“I would be delighted, my dear. Where and when?”
“I could do next Saturday, because the Saturday after that the girls and I have plans. I chose Windsor though, so it is your turn. Only no more bikes, please.”
“Yes, well I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that in the foreseeable future. Let me see…where to go. If you are up for more castles we could visit Aberdeen, or we could do Brighton for the beach.”
“It is up to you.” Minerva replied not wiling to help him.
“What do you say to Brighton and perhaps a re-match in chess so I can beat you?”
“Don’t sound so confident, Professor Dumbledore, you don’t know all my moves yet.” Minerva blushed slightly as she saw Albus’ eyebrows rise, “For chess, I mean,” she finished weakly hoping the redness of her cheeks would subside by next Saturday.
“Yes, well next Saturday sounds great. I’ll owl you with details, thank you Minerva.” With that Albus apparated back to Hogwarts, leaving Minerva alone and very embarrassed and slightly upset that Albus didn’t want to investigate what other moves she might have that did not pertain to chess.
Minerva sighed as she left Windsor, and arrived back at her house relieved to find it empty of her friends. ‘Friends, I’ll have to settle for friends.’ She thought to herself as she sunk into the bathtub. ‘Well, maybe not.’ Minerva said aloud as she took a sip of her wine. ‘Perhaps all he needs is subtle persuasion…very subtle.’ Minerva spent the rest of the night pondering how to worm her way into Albus’ heart

I apologize for the wretched delay. I do hope I may seek and find foregiveness... Chapter Five: Stolen Glances Early Saturday morning Minerva rose with the sun to prepare for her outing with Albus. Humming softly to herself Minerva moved about her kitchen piling various foods into a medium size picnic basket musing that lunch would be needed. Once finished with preparing lunch Minerva pulled her hair into a messy bun before she began searching her hall closet for the necessary beach items. Finding some muggle sun screen in an old bag Minerva smiled as she placed it with the items she intended to take with her. ‘Surely Albus will help me apply some of that to my back,’ she thought to herself. Two hours later Minerva took one last look at herself in the mirror before grabbing her shoulder bag, picnic basket, and the portkey she intended to use to take her to Brighton. * Albus breathed the sea air in deeply as he walked along the streets of the town: his destination the entry to the beach. Once again his hair and beard were cropped, and he carried one of his chess boards in his right hand. Arriving before Minerva he lazily turned to look out at the sea. It wasn’t until she was right beside of him that Albus realized Minerva had appeared. “Hello stranger.” “I was supposed to meet a young lady today, but I do believe I’ll just spend my day with you instead,” Albus teased turning to smile down at his new friend. “And break that poor girl’s heart? What kind of man are you?” Minerva replied smiling brightly up at Albus. Catching up on how their perspective weeks were Albus and Minerva picked an empty spot on the beach to settle down for the day. Shedding her summer dress Minerva tried not to steal a glance in Albus’ direction to see if he was watching her. While Minerva fought her own inner battle Albus was engaged with one of his own: trying to tear his eyes away from her. He noticed the swimsuit was the style of the day, and it accentuated the figure she had. Not to mention it was an emerald green that looked great next to her skin. Albus tore his gaze away, but found it retreating back to her form. The third time he did this Albus watched mesmerized as Minerva lathered herself up with the sun screen. ‘Is she taking longer on her legs or is it just me?’ Albus thought to himself then conceded she just didn’t want to burn. Deciding he needed to occupy himself he reached for the bottle as soon as she put it down, and started to apply the lotion to his own body. Naturally not as careful he missed large spots on his legs, and torso. “Albus, do you think you could do my back? I can’t reach it,” Minerva asked sweetly turning so her back was facing him. “Only if you’ll do mine.” He replied inching forward. “Deal, and do rub it all the way in so no white is showing on my back please.” “Are all women this demanding or just you,” Albus responded beginning to rub his hands over the half of her back that was exposed to the sun. “You’ll pay for that one, Professor Dumbledore.” “I’m very scared,” Albus mocked in a shrilly voice. “You better be. How about a wager on the chess game?” Minerva suggested turning around, and indicating with her hand that Albus do the same. “Not a bad idea, since I know I’ll win I agree but what is the wager?” “If I win you take me dancing two weeks from today at a place of my choosing.” “Ok, and if I win you must accompany me to a local muggle show about farm animals, and the equipment they use to harvest and such.” “You’re kidding. Please tell me you are kidding,” Minerva gawked still working on his back. “Indeed I am not,” Albus replied smiling widely as he titled his head to look up at Minerva. For a moment he held her gaze before dropping his head back, and therefore missing Minerva’s disappointed look. Once Minerva was done Albus moved to set up the game, and immediately they set to playing; each concentrating fully in hopes of winning the bet. Two hours later Minerva hung her head in shame, and Albus rolled onto his back on the blanket Minerva had brought with her. “Do you smell that Minerva?” “What?” “I do believe I smell victory.” Carefully avoiding the glare Minerva was sending him Albus stood up, and pulled his companion with him. “I fancy a dip, c’mon.” Minerva allowed herself to be dragged along, but she was out of that water within five minutes. She liked to look at the sea, but she had never had an overwhelming urge to connect with it in such a way that resulted in her being wet, her hair feeling salty, and her eyes burning. Lying back down on the blanket Minerva closed her eyes, and took the moment to reflect on how Albus’ hands had felt on her back. ‘I could get used to that, perhaps I’ll need to see if I can get a massage sometime down the road. Maybe,’ but her thoughts were interrupted when she realized someone was standing in her sunlight. “Would you mind moving, please? I’d like to be able to get some sun,” was her first reply not aware that it was anyone but Albus. “A pretty thing like you should stay out of the sun. I mean with that skin…” Minerva immediately sat up, and opened her eyes. “I would appreciate it if you were to move, and leave me alone. Also, most women do not like being referred to as things, work on your line.” Before the man could respond Minerva’s jaw loosened when Albus’ form came into sight behind her unwelcome guest. “I’m sorry we haven’t met,” Albus said clapping the man on the back, a little harder than necessary, “I’m Brian, and you are?” “Greg.” “Well, Greg, I do hope the reason you were approaching my wife was out of a genuine concern that she might burn, because if not I would be very unhappy and you don’t want me unhappy. Does he sweetheart?” “Fierce temper,” Minerva responded with all seriousness, but wanting to laugh. “Uh, yes it is…hot.” The man finished lamely. “Hmm yes it is that. Well it was nice to meet you Greg.” Albus extended his hand, and Minerva watched as the young man grimaced slightly at the grip Albus had on his hand. Sure he was out of earshot Minerva burst into a fit of giggles, and Albus joined her for a bit. “Are you alright?” “Perfectly, I can usually handle myself but thank you very much.” In a moment of boldness Minerva leaned forward, and softly kissed Albus’ cheek. “Now I’m hungry why don’t we get some lunch, Brian?” she suggested emphasizing Brian. Chuckling Albus consented always ready for a hearty meal. The rest of the afternoon was uneventful as the pair spent most of it in conversation about muggles, and the treatment of muggle born children in their society. Albus thoroughly enjoyed the topic, and Minerva’s ability to articulate her points. Walking back into his quarters at Hogwarts he realized he was beginning to value her opinions and advice over many people he knew. Shaking his head Albus pondered on how quickly relationships could be built, or more importantly how quickly they could proceed. * Minerva entered her home happy to find it unoccupied by her friends, undoubtedly they would ask too many questions now when she needed to think. The day had gone well, and though upset at loosing the chance to dance all night in Albus’ arms at least that was one more Saturday in which she would have him in her exclusive company. Thinking back on moments from the day Minerva couldn’t decide what her favorite was: his glances at her, the way he tried to protect or save her, his hands on her back. Knowing the list could go on she simply chose to enjoy each memory for what it was, and then spend some time dreaming about possible memories to come. * The next weekend Minerva was seated in Emily’s apartment with the other girls: goodies in the floor between them, and drinks not far off. They were currently laughing at Laura’s rendition of her last date when the poor man had been so nervous he poured his drink all over the table, and then in his eagerness to clean it up he made Laura’s glass fly into her own lap. “He ruined a good dress I’ll have you know,” she huffed between all the laughter. “He offered to buy you another one! He really is sweet. Will you go out with him again?” “I’m not sure. I know I’ll have to go shopping, Merlin knows what his taste in clothes is. But I’m more interested in Minerva’s past weekend.” “Really with the way you were going on about yourself I couldn’t tell,” was the sarcastic reply, coupled with a smile to soften the blow. “Yes well, darling, typically I’m more interesting,” Laura shot back. “Fine. I had planned to tell you a few things, but I don’t wish to bore you. What kind of a friend would I be?” “The very best,” Sarah answered reaching for a chocolate frog from the stockpile of sweets in the floor. With a little more cajoling Minerva recounted parts of her Saturday with Albus, and for a few hours let her friends sweep her up in a whirlwind of optimistic musings.
