Chapter nine: Memories of a kiss
Wulfric and Aurora made their way into the hospital wing that evening to find their mother sitting up in bed with a faraway look on her tired face. She didn’t even realize she had company till Wulfric touched her hand softly.
"Oh!" she said as she raised a hand to clutch her neck.
"Sorry," said Wulfric, "I didn’t mean to startle you!"
"It’s quite all right, Wulfric," she answered. "I was in my own little world. Have you had word from your father?"
Wulfric shook his head sadly as he lowered himself into a comfortable-looking chair beside her bed. Aurora perched on the side of the bed and played with her hands.
"He hasn’t sent an owl or anything," mumbled Aurora. "He has been back to his room because some of his things are missing. It’s all my fault."
"Aurora," said Minerva as she reached across and held her daughter’s hand, "please don’t blame yourself, I am more to blame than anyone but we can’t wallow in our self-pity. Your father is out there, Merlin knows where and I am worried about him."
"Are you really?" questioned Wulfric as he sat forward in his chair.
"What type of question is that, Wulfric?" demanded Aurora who was outraged that her brother would ask such a question.
"It’s quite all right, Aurora," cut in Minerva sadly. "It’s a valid question."
"I didn’t mean it the way it came out," said Wulfric. "It’s just because of everything that has happened."
"I am concerned about him," answered Minerva as she looked into her son’s eyes. "He, as well as you two, have been overlooked. I haven’t realized what it must be like for you all. I have been selfishly thinking about myself and trying to make sense of it all by myself when I should have come to you for help. I am remembering things slowly, but I wish it would happen quicker. Throughout it all, I have been drawn to your father, my husband. I have hated to see him hurt and know that I am causing the hurt. Please don’t think that I’m enjoying this."
"We would never think that!" said Aurora as she noticed the tears forming in her mother’s eyes.
"Today I felt a connection with him as we walked out of the school and into the grounds. I can see why I married him in the first place. I do love him, but I just don’t have the memories we made yet," continued Minerva as she let the tears fall from her eyes. "I need to find him, my children!"
"We don’t know where he is though!" replied Wulfric who was holding Minerva’s other hand.
"Can you think of anywhere he might go?" asked Minerva. "Please think!"
Wulfric and Aurora thought for some minutes. They were about to give up when the same idea popped into their heads and came out of their mouths in unison.
"The cottage!"
Minerva looked closely at the two of young adults in front of her. As she tried to process her thoughts, a small cottage that had ivy crawling up the walls came into her mind. She could hear happy voices and laughter coming from inside the cottage. She knew this place well and it contained many happy memories.
"Mother?" questioned Aurora.
"This cottage, does it have ivy crawling up the walls on either side of the door which is painted green?" asked Minerva.
"Yes!" voiced Wulfric and Aurora together.
"Do you remember it?" asked Wulfric.
"Many happy times have been spent there," answered Minerva with a smile. "Do you think he may have gone there?"
"It’s possible!" said Wulfric with a nod. "Shall we go and see?"
"No," replied Minerva, "I’ll go!"
"Poppy won’t let you go," said Aurora.
"That’s why you’re going to distract her," said Minerva with a sly smile. "I only need a few moments to slip out of here. I need to go to him."
"Okay!" said Wulfric with a laugh. "Aurora is quite good at causing a scene!"
"I would hex you for that comment if I had my wand," commented his sister sternly.
"Go to the fireplace in Poppy’s office, the floo powder is on the mantelpiece," explained Wulfric, "step into the fire and say Ivy Cottage!"
"I know!" said Minerva with a smile.
Aurora nodded at her mother and brother as she made her way over to where the mediwitch was sitting. As she passed a table that was stacked high with bandages and health charts, she made herself trip over and she went flying across the hospital wing floor with a yelp. She knocked the bandages off the table as she hit the floor with a thud.
"Is anything hurting?" asked Poppy who was beside Aurora faster then any of them had imagined.
"My ankle!" yelped Aurora as she watched her brother help her mother off the bed.
"Wulfric!" called out Poppy as she ran her hand over Aurora’s slightly swollen right ankle. "Can you get me my bag, I think I left it in my office."
"Yes Madam Pomfrey!" replied Wulfric as he stuffed the pillows under Minerva’s covers to make out that she was curled up asleep under them.
Minerva made her way over to the fireplace and picked up a handful of floo powder which she threw in the fire.
"Ivy Cottage!" she stated clearly as blue flames appeared in the fire.
Minerva looked around the room to make sure that Poppy couldn’t see her. She hoped that Aurora wasn’t seriously hurt as she stepped into the fire. She felt the flames consume her and drag her along a dark corridor. She kept her arms tight against her body as she remembered that she could end up somewhere else if she wasn’t careful.
After what seemed like minutes when it was actually a matter of seconds, Minerva tumbled gracefully out of a fireplace and landed on her feet. She brushed the soot off of her hospital robes and looked around the familiar room. She took a step forward and heard some glass crunch under her foot. She was glad that she had put on her slippers. She looked down on the floor and what she saw brought tears to her eyes again. There at her feet lay Albus Dumbledore, asleep and curled up in a loose ball. Her eyes caught sight of a picture he was holding against his chest. She knelt down beside him, carefully extracted the photo from his hands and looked at it intently. It was the same photo that she had seen in the photo album he had showed her a few days before. She ran a finger over the picture of Albus and sighed sadly. She looked down at the man on the floor and she felt love flowing her body as she took in every feature on his face. She tentatively reached forward and brushed a loose bit of hair away from his face. She allowed her fingers to linger for a few more moments until she heard him stirring and she quickly pulled her hand away from his face.
"Minerva?" he questioned sleepily as his eyes opened. "Is that really you?"
"It’s me!" she answered nervously.
"Why are you here?" he asked as he sat up and looked intently at her.
"I needed to come and find you," she told him. "I needed to say how sorry I am for all this."
"Oh!" answered Albus as he looked down at his hands that were resting on his lap.
He shuddered slightly when he felt her cup his face with her delicate smooth hands and force him to look at her. He tried to avoid eye contact with her as he didn’t want to see the unfamiliar look in her eyes. Minerva let her fingers stroke his face softly, she knew that he was avoiding eye contact and she couldn’t blame him really. His skin felt so smooth under the palms of her hands, she could feel his blood pumping through his body. As she touched his skin, she felt a strange current run through her body and she found that it wasn’t at all unpleasant. In fact, she was delighted by the familiar stirrings it was causing within her body. She closed her eyes and began to remember what his kiss was like.
She pictured her lips covering his, the kiss was soft and gentle but full of desire and love. She felt his arms encircle her trim waist and pull her closer to him as he deepened the kiss by parting her lips with his tongue. His tongue entered her mouth and swirled around inside tasting her. The kiss was causing so many forgotten memories to rise to the surface, Minerva was overwhelmed by the feelings that were pounding against her body. She could remember his touch, the way his fingers would brush against her body as he kissed her and made love with her. She could remember the need and want for her husband, her body was running away with her thoughts and she wanted to have his touch.
She heard a groan and she opened her eyes. She suddenly realized that she hadn’t been remembering a kiss from a while ago, but that she was actually reliving the kiss with Albus. She pulled away and tried to catch her breath. She watched as Albus opened his eyes and they simply stared at each other, both of them trying to process what had just happened in their minds.
