Thank you for your reviews! There are more somewhere in my head but at the moment I am having difficulty getting them from there to paper. I will try though. Happy reading, Sprinkles

Title: Choices Rating: Everyone Genre: I'm sorry, Elo, but it's angst. Summary: The end of a story that began with Too Much and Not Enough. I really wanted it to be happy, but my muse thought otherwise. Sorry it has taken so long to write down, but I can't begin to tell you how many different versions of this I have tried!
fanfic100 Challenge Prompt #86 Choices
Minerva walked briskly as she made her way toward the wrought iron gates, doing her best not to look at the large, white tomb easily visible from her path. It had been over a year since his death and she had dealt with it as she had the many loses their side had sustained. She had simply accepted it and continued to do what needed to be done. Long ago, she had learned that there was no time for grief in the midst of war. Now the war was over, but she still refused to allow herself to think on the past, to ponder what might have been. She was reaching for the gate, ready to leave the past to itself and embrace whatever retirement would bring, when she heard it. The tune was low and mournful, nothing like its former glory, yet she recognized the sound of a phoenix, of his phoenix. “Fawkes,” she choked out as she turned toward the sound of his song, but the phoenix was already gone, if he had ever been there at all, leaving only the tomb of the man they had both loved for Minerva to see. She began to tremble as images of memories long since blocked out flashed across her mind without warning. Her first day of Hogwarts. Meeting Albus as a child. Transforming into Tabby for the first time. Coming back to Hogwarts as a woman and suddenly seeing Albus as a man.Tears poured out in stark contrast to her blank expression. She felt numb and yet so raw from the thoughts and memories as images continued to appear from the past. Their first dance. Years of sitting to his right throughout meals and meetings. Their first and only kiss.Minerva sagged against the gate as emotion overtook her. That night had been the hardest of her life, including that of Albus’ death. To reject his love had been excruciating, to explain that rejection to her friends, nearly impossible, and worst still, to live with him and with the knowledge that all she wanted, all she had ever wanted was within reach, that had been nearly lethal. “And yet, here I am,” she whispered, gaze firmly locked upon Albus’ tomb. “I have survived, as I knew I would, and the time has come.” With one last ragged breath, she chocked out the words she had been dreading for so long. “Goodbye, Albus.” She stumbled backward as the gate let loose at her words. Suddenly she was standing outside the grounds of Hogwarts, looking back at the castle and looking back on her life. This was just another in a long line of difficult choices she had made in the many years since she had first walked through those gates. Regardless of the pain it caused her, she knew this was the right decision for all involved. So, as she had so many years before, Minerva took a deep breath and turned away from that she loved most, knowing it was the best choice for them both.
