. . . . . . . . . I just finished, and I could not be more pleased with the outcome (unless, of course, the book was filled with ADMM). I was so dissapointed for so much of the book but then as soon as the trio got to The Hog's Head it just kicked so much ass. Min was fantabulous! I was so upset thinking she had been forgotten, but no. When Harry defended her, it had to be one of my favorite parts. I for one, definitely caught a hint of shippy-ness when Harry told her he was following Dumbledore's orders and she was so quick to accept that.
Harry's scene at King's Cross with Dumbledore was amazing. It was truth time. Dumbledore at his best. I didn't get that sense of withheld information that I normally got in Harry/Dumbledore scenes. The respect that these two men have for eachother was so evident, and it was incredible.
I love how the plot played out. Harry kind of dying and comming back to hand Voldemorts shit to him was awesome. It was shocking and totally unpredictable for me.
The Epilogue wasn't my favorite simply because the pairings were such a big part of it. If it had just been Harry watching his children get on the Hogwarts Express I would have liked it so much more. Throughout the book I warmed up slightly to the idea of H/G and Hr/R but I still didn't love the idea. I can deal with that being what happened but I feel details involving ships could have been avoided to make for a more audience pleasing ending.
It was all made up for when the name of Harry's son, Albus Severus Potter, is revealed. That was probably the best moment in the whole book for me. It was amazing.
Besides that tiny issue, I have no complaints. It was spectacular and I hope everyone else enjoyed it to the same extent that I did.

I absolutely loved the book as well. It was wonderful and never stopped! It was deliciously packed with ongoing action and Harry's feelings that I couldn't put it down. I immendiately found that I HAD to read 10 times slower when I reached chapter 19. This book did something I had never truly experienced before. Within moments of each other-I had laughed, cried, squirmed, and was sobbing so many times. It was exausting to say the least and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. I found that even before it was confirmed that Snape was innocent, I cried while he died, probably the hardest. But it was the conversation that I loved so much between Albus and Harry that truly ended the story. Because Albus saved it all, I was sobbing and couldn't stop and when Albus said those words that he didn't believe Harry died that I jumped for joy and scared my cousin who was 200 pages behind me.

SPOILERS---- Was anyone else disappointed in the "epilogue" for the 19 years later? I found it very flat -- it read like very typical fanfiction (not that there's anything wrong with that) -- and I was disappointed that it only focussed on a few of the characters and their multiple (and, to me, somewhat annoying) offspring. I don't know about you but, I wanted to know what had happened to everyone else in those 19 years - not just about Harry and family. It was nice but I wanted more..... I had hoped for a Lord of the Rings appendix type thing at the end of DH telling us about what had happened in peoples lives. What is Luna up to and does she marry Neville? What is Minerva up to? What has happened to Hagrid? Did Hermione get reunited with her parents? All those unanswered questions that I would love to know answers too. I am hoping JK will produce something along those lines as I just feel that she has ended the HARRY saga but missed the full stop at the end. I don't think it is much to ask - I'm not asking for a story just a little booklet full of information. Does anyone else agree or am I totally alone in this thought?

Possible shippiness.....
We know that MM knew that AD wanted to be buried on the Hogwarts grounds. Now, why would he want to be buried there....two reasons:
a) he loved Hogwarts and knew that any other place, such as some ceremonial vault near the Ministry, would exalt the very parts of him he'd tried so hard to subdue--desire for power, etc.--while Hogwarts represented the best of him;
b) he wanted the protection of all the wards at Hogwarts to make it harder for someone to rob his tomb and get the Elder Wand.
Now, since he told MM he wanted to be buried at Hogwarts, given how emotional she was when she talked about it, the odds are he told her at least something of *why* he wanted to be buried there and that it was imperative no one talk her out of it. Which means they were much closer than Deputy/Head. He was very ashamed of his past re the Hallows and wouldn't have told anyone but the closest of intimates.
A stretch, maybe, but..... :-)

I seem to be the only one happy with the epilogue; whilst it definitely could have done with details of their careers and the lives of other characters (big criticism actually) I loved the 'Albus Severus' bit so much I actually let out a squeak. Yes it was fanficish, but it just proves ff authors were thinking along the same lines as Jo! I certainly don't think DH was as fanficish as HBP. MMADfan, what did you mean by strangeness about Nagini? I'm a little confused...

*(Don't forget that people might accidentaly read these spoilers on the "last 20 posts" page!) * * * * * * * I am now very wary of making any assumptions about what Minerva knew and did not know. I think the ship is safe forever - those who felt the need to abandon it did so after the last book, which put a large hole in our hull. Those of us who are left, though, are at least free to sail the seas, even if we are only clinging to large bits of debris...
Enough of the naff metaphores! I would like to say that I thought the 19 years later bit was cringe-making, just like the very worst fanfiction. Yuch. But I think the rest of it was great! I, like Apocalypticat, went through much of it feeling a bit sick for Albus, but I had this JKR quote in the back of my mind the whole time:
"Dumbledore is the epitome of goodness"
Clinging to that, I KNEW he would be vindicated. And I need to re-read Kings X, but I never for one moment thought when I read it that Dumbledore had knowingly sent Harry to his death. I thought he knew that Harry could survive...I might be missing something here. Remember the triumph in his eyes in GOF when the two serpents rose together from the pensive, entwined? I can't believe that triumph would out-weigh his horror at Harry's certain death. My impression was that he told Snape what he did to ensure that Harry could face Voldemort without fear and do what he needed to do to vanquish V. Any thoughts, or did I speed-read and miss a bit?
The Snape-Lily thing, I knew that was coming, thanks to Foci (who I am pretty sure is still lurking around here...) who worked it out a couple of years ago. She got shot down quite severly on the mugglenet threads, so hurrah for her and her triumph!
As for our Minerva, well! Her actions speak for themselves! Long live ADMM!

* * * * * * * Oh and one more kinda shippy moment that I forgot. At one point there is a picture of Dumbledores family and his mother has black hair up in a tight bun. What, persay, does that mean? If we take a Freaudian view, its retty damn cool

* * * * I saw that, about the picture of his family. But I refuse to take the freudian view as it's pretty weird, to say the least. I'm not a freud fan but it's certainly there. The hardest part of the book to read was Hermione's sacrifice with her parents, It broke my heart, and she was so strong. The Snape-Lily was tragically beautiful. I watched the scenes waiting for him to hurt her. The last horcrux, not Harry, was very good indeed. Slipped up in noticing that one in the last book. The war was very intense, and I'm glad that's what the book was about. It couldn't have worked any other way. It was nice to see dotted bits of humour everywhere what with Potterwatch etc. Human Dumbledore worked, with his mistakes, I always firmly believed he was good and he was. He had human emotions though and battled with those and his demons forever. But the love thing was there at the end. I think that may have just saved ADMM for me

Just an afterthought which came to my mind. Does anybody know or guess what the baby in the King's Cross Chapter means? It seemed to me like it had a greater meaning or a symbol character as it was the only living being besides Albus and Harry, but I somehow just couldn't get the meaning....
(Did I mention that I LOVE this chapter?? *sigh*) just wonderful how Albus reveals himself to Harry and they reach a new understanding... also the scene in the Headmasters chambers when Harry has beaten Voldemort and Albus is crying... Just heart wrenching!

(Did I mention that I LOVE this chapter?? *sigh*) just wonderful how Albus reveals himself to Harry and they reach a new understanding... also the scene in the Headmasters chambers when Harry has beaten Voldemort and Albus is crying... Just heart wrenching! I thought it might be the little bit of Voldemort's soul that had been in Harry, but I think it's very open to other interpretations, as well. I was fairly happy with the King's Cross chapter, but I still wish their had been a bit more about Albus's conclusions about the second connection between Harry and Voldemort that was made when V used HP's blood. But you can't have everything. I do think it odd that there were all these things that JKR said would be in the final book that weren't there at all -- unless I just missed them, but since they appear in others' lists, I don't think I did. E.g., professors are married, and why it's a secret; someone would use magic late in life (!?!); she'd hinted that Harry might get a new pet in book 7, and he only lost Hedwig; and I'm sure there are more that I don't remember. BTW, did anyone else see the doe Patronus and immediately think it might be Snape's, since JKR had been so adamant that she couldn't say what Snape's Patronus was or she'd be giving away too much for the last book? I still find Snape a very morally ambiguous character -- in fact, I like it that way -- but he's darker than I had hoped. But I suppose that's what allowed him to carry through where others would give in to their empathy (his actions/non-actions as Headmaster is what I'm thinking of here). He was very calculating and very Slytherin to the end -- which I'm pleased with.

. . . . . . . . . . . General sentiment Well, my reaction at the end was that JKR has set herself up nicely for more books to come with the fact that Harry didn't die and the way she left so much to the imagination with the epilogue ... (I think that in terms of closure it would have been better if Harry had died).
Biggest disappointment I am actually disappointed with the epilogue, too, and unlike so many here I am also mildy disappointed with the fact that there weren't MORE Ron/Hermione moments. I wasn't really expecting AD/MM to be confirmed but I would have thought that after six years of dancing around their feelings at least Ron and Hermione would have had more "quality time" together. That said I loved the bit where Ron left Harry and Hermione (although it seriously disturbed me at the time and brought me to the brink of tears) and the insinuations when Ron and Hermione set off for "the bathroom" ...
Most heart-wrenching moment When Lupin announces the birth of his son I actually had to cry. And when Lupin AND Tonks were killed off I just couldn't understand it. I mean WHY for heaven's sake???
What I would have liked to have seen I would have liked to have seen more of Snape. Although I really liked "The Prince's Tale" I didn't quite get why the earlier chapter was called "The Sacking of Severus Snape". He wasn't sacked after all ... he fled ... again ...
Things which wound me up for no particular reason The names of Ron's and Hermione's kids. Rose and Hugo?? Where did those come from?
Closing statement There are too many loose ends. In particular because the epilogue is set 19 years later and we do not learn what happened in the immediate aftermath or in the missing years. Now there's a whole lot for fan fic writers to fill in if JKR doesn't do this herself!
For those of you who have been reading my fic "Funeral Revelations": I will most likely continue with it although it will become A/U now that Snape has been killed. I won't let him die - I like him far too much!

Spoilers from Book 7 * * * * * * * * * I thought I would add my thoughts as well: I loved it. I thought the way it all came together was very nice. She showed how human Dumbledore was, but how good. Further she managed to show what Harry had that even Albus didn't, he had the bravery and the strength of soul to give himself to death without trying to conqueor it...so much like his mother. The book definitely got even better when they got to Hogwarts. Can I just say how proud I am of Neville? I've never been so happy that he defies the Death Eaters and even Voldemort, a true Gryffindor. Molly Weasley rocks. Hermione was even more brilliant than usual and Ron came into his own as well, he had lots of insecurities to battle. As to Minerva her scenes were awesome! I love how she told Slughorn that if he or any of his house stood in their way they would duel to kill. I too noticed that as soon as Harry said he was acting on "Dumbledore's Orders" she snapped to in an instant. As to AD/MM I'm happy with the book. Yes it wasn't confirmed, but more importantly it wasn't denied. The way Minerva jumped when Harry said Dumbledore, how harry said he didn't know who Albus loved and when Albus said don't pity the dying...only the living who have never felt love. I think all of those moments left it open for our ship to really exist. As to what Minerva knew? No idea. I will say this, though, we never see her truely doubt him. Harry doubted Dumbledore, as did others, and though we don't get to spend much time with her we have seen throughout all the books how strong her support for him his. Yes she's loyal, but you'll never convince me she was blindly loyal and for her to be that supportative I think she knew and loved him for his weaknesses and how he tried to control them. I'm not saying she knew about his quest for the Deathly Hallows, but I could see her knowing about Ariana. I've all ready got a fic in mind based on that idea...a one off but yeah... CC

My thoughts exactly. The only way the "Professors being married" thing would even kind of click is if you counted ex-professors, and then you could use Remus to fill that quote. But I didn't really think that was what she meant... JKR left us with a lot of unanswered questions, didn't she? I mean, the epilogue was expected, R/Hr and H/G, I wish she would've shown us something we DIDN'T expect..like, I dunno, Harry's children in the Headmistresses office after getting into a fight with Draco's son...that would've been entertaining. Or "Albus Severus Potter" talking to Albus's portrait in the Headmaster's office. Oh well, I suppose there's always fanfiction.

ZOMG SPOILERS. -_-
*

*
*
I loved so much of this book. Minerva leading an army of desks, Trelawny lobbing crystal balls at Death Eaters, Kreacher's change in attitude and loyalty, Luna's bedroom, Harry defending Minerva, the Malfoys redeeming themselves, and finally finding out the truth about so much of it, especially Snape and Dumbledore's pasts. I was so glad when it was revealed that Snape was good. I started shouting "I KNEW IT!" and had to restrain myself from spoiling it for my mother and everyone else in about a half-mile radius of my house. [*Would have shouted it from the rooftop, except not really*]
So many things had me crying, too, like all of the deaths. I think Tonks and Lupin's deaths hit me the hardest. And Fred. I can't imagine a Harry Potter world without the Weasley twins together. But oh my god, Molly was amazing at the end.
I am so, so, so upset that the quote about teachers being secretly married wasn't touched upon at all. I wanted, obviously, for a secret MMAD relationship to be revealed, but I was also prepared to accept it if it wasn't them. By the part where Minerva calls the other Heads (Spectacled tabby cat patronus = squee.), I was already suspecting a MMAD relationship wouldn't be explicitly stated, and I began to wonder if a Flitwick/Sprout thing would happen. Even though I don't care strongly about that ship (I don't dislike it, of course.), I would have preferred that to the quote getting my hopes up and amounting to absolutely nothing. I've guessed wrong about a lot of things in Harry Potter, so I would have been fine with saying, "Okay, Albus and Minerva weren't married in the books," but there was absolutely nothing.
I think the epilogue was sweet, but it left so many questions unanswered. All it basically tells you is who's married to whom and who they're kids are, but barely even that because we only know about the trio, and Bill and Fleur's daughter (I'm assuming, since she's a cousin of James, Jr. and her name is French) is hinted at. We don't know anything about what happened to Minerva or the Ministry or Luna or what everyone is doing exactly. Well, except for Professor Neville, which is adorable.
This is rather unsignificant, but I think Hermione must have brought her parents back from Australia and restored their memories because Ron mentions "Grandad Weasley," and I don't see a point in him tacking on the "Weasley" unless the children have both sets of grandparents in their lives.
I think that even though an ADMM relationship was never confirmed, Minerva's love for Albus was really wonderfully shown. Her staying at the school even under the new regime made me think of OotP, with the "Hogwarts needs you" bit from Dumbledore. She's still unwaveringly loyal to him, and how she behaves in the deuling scene with Snape really makes me think she loved Albus. And how she reacts when Harry says he's acting on Dumbledore's orders, not only accepting this without question but also ensuring later that Harry doesn't forget what he's supposed to be doing, shows how loyal she was to Albus. Some of it might just me clutching at ADMM straws, but either way I still think they loved each other.
Minerva's comment in HBP, "Dumbledore would have been happier than anybody to think that there was a little more love in the world," is, in my opinion, rather similar to what Albus says in King's Cross: "Pity the living, and, above all, those who die without love." Again, I may be looking too hard, but these quotes make me think they had some degree of intimacy beyond Headmaster and Deputy or simply friendship, since it's about love.
This was indecently long, so I'll stop now.

Have read book second time. Reactions: The names of Ron's and Hermione's kids. Rose and Hugo?? Where did those come from? Ditto. I was a little like.... "Um... OK, then..." *thereisntabemusedsmiliesoimputtingthishereinstead* Especially Hugo. Hugo, like a frickin' henchman. Sheesh, Ron. The Severus/Lily was win. BTW. [anguish] FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!! [/anguish] Um... yes, then. Does anyone know where "Rapier" came from? "Rodent" I get, but Rapier? WTF? Does "Fred" mean sharp? Or... something? Is it like "rapier wit"? Is this a really dumb question? Help? ALSO: Deathly Hallows is my favorite book, even more so than OotP. Yes, the awesome, amazing, one-of-a-kind, incredibly sexy, fat, jolly, loverly, "He will not be single handed" OotP has been bumped down to second place. Wow. Never thought I'd say it. But it's true. 'S all.

I too, was not a big fan of the epilogue. Naming absolutely all of their kids after someone? It doesn't feel right. Middle names to commemorate (with the exception of Albus Severus which, as much as I did a double take every time I saw it, did work) would have been a bit less sickeningly sweet. I also wanted some more explanation of what happened with other characters. I really would have loved to have seen Dudley appear again. It was really touching to see he and Harry sort of make-up and it would have been nice to see more of that. They never would have been the best of friends, but it would have been interesting. A random thought in that direction: Dudley ends up with a wizard/witch kid. The King's Cross bit still could have been used and it would have been an opportunity for some great comedy if Dudley was still somewhat nervous about magic.
Disappointed about the MMAD, too, but that was more of a pipe dream as far as I was concerned. I just had a hard time seeing it as being in there. I got what I really wanted though: the ship didn't sink and that piece of fandom can remain as I imagine without canon interfering. If it did become canon, I would have lost that I'm sure. my imagination is very specific. ;D

Well, This book is very much bittersweet to me. Many things I had expected since I first read the books has become true.
Harry 'coming back' from Kings Cross wasn't a surprise, to me.
I was upset about the lack of spouses in hogwarts, but I think JK may justify herself with that. I don't believe she would leave it like that.
LUPIN AND TONKS!!! I was so happy about the marrige and the baby, to me it was like saying LUPIN AND TONKS ARE SAFE FROM HARM! THEY HAVE A BABY, THEY CAN"T BE KILLED! I cried so hard with their deaths. I believe those are the two that JK said dhe didn't intend to die. (I believe hagrid got the reprive.)
Question about Teddy Lupin: Did Harry raise him? He was the godfather, after all.
I loved that Hr/R got married, but I was hoping Harry and Luna would be together.
I feel that there is a lot missing to the story. Maybe the epilouge was the problem. I Wanted to know what happened, but I don't think she tells eniough. I mean, Is Harry an Auror?
And to the AD/MMness: I think, after 7 books with tidbits, in our hearts, they are together. A little shippyness in this book, but I believe OOTP is still my favorite.
I have cried terribly over the past few days. I finished the book around 3 pm sat; AS soon as i closed the book, I went to my mommy and cried my heart out. I am not ashamed to say it.

I have to say that the more time passes since I finished the book, the less I like it. The plot was okay, and it isn't even the deaths that bother me more than when I first finished it, but the flatness of the characters. It feels to me (your mileage may vary!) that JKR lost some of her steam and some of her love for her characters by the time she reached this book and was just writing it to finish the series. You could tell she still loves Harry, but the others just moved in his orbit, more or less, and served a plot-purpose. They didn't feel fully fleshed out.
I've said before, elsewhere, that I don't think I'll re-read this book any time soon, but I actually think that I won't read it again at all. I may look something up in it to refresh my memory, but I won't re-read it as I've re-read the others.
Maybe it would be impossible to write a final book in this series that would really live up to the expectations that have grown over the course of the previous six books, I don't know. I do know that most of the characters were either flat or unrecognizable or both. Lupin falls into that category, definitely, and most of the Weasleys, with the exception of Ron (who was just strangely written -- his whole subplot seemed very strained, drawn out, and unsympathetic). Even Snape, with the slight exception of the Prince chapter, seemed to be given short-shrift as a character. The only characters that I thought were really well done (that I can think of now, anyway) were Harry, Minerva, Hermione (sort of, though she was somewhat two-dimensional for most of it), Kreacher, and maybe Dobby. The other characters just seemed to move about doing things and saying things without us being able to see their souls, so to speak. There may be a few other characters that I just am not thinking of at the moment, but I do feel that it wasn't the plot that bothered me, but its execution, particularly when it came to the characters. I just think it could have been much better done -- but my expectations may be too high. It is a series of children's books, after all. Yet OotP still meets my expectations. . . . but maybe I wouldn't have been happy with any final book in the series. I dunno! Still, I don't think I'll be rushing out to write a DH-compliant fic any time soon, if ever. I'd really rather write a "Quest for the Deathly Hallows" "prequel" and give AD more depth and more complexity than was managed in the (understandably) Harry-centric DH. Not that we can't see that there's complexity there, but it isn't really explored in DH, at least not to my satisfaction.
Still, it's obvious that the book did please a lot of folks, and at least the series is done and we know what constitutes canon and what doesn't and we can work with that however we want to in our fanfics. As I've said, I'm not altering RaM to fit DH, and the more that I digest DH, the more pleased I am by that decision.

Grindlewald/Albus dynamic= Cool shit. Rita Skeeter= Bitch. Sevvie= My new lover. JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND PRETEND THAT I AM LILY, MY LOVE!!!! Speakating of this: The Severus/Lily= Ha. Knew it. Grey Lady/Bloody Baron= I am their new fanbase. Plus Nick for added love triangular triangles! Bella/Voldie= YES!!! SO MANY SHIPPER MOMENTS!!! SO MANY OF THEM!!!! The epilogue= WTF? That was the one thing I did not love. It seemed so drab and flat. "And they all lived happily ever after?" Are you JOKING? (JMO. I'm sure it was brilliant from an objective PoV, and wanted them all to die. But the kids' names? Very fanfic, IMAO.) * * * * * I totally agree with the above!!! I am soooo helping to ship Grey Lady/Blody Baron, but my true ship lies with MMADness. I'm going to always support AD/MM, and book 7 didn't completely sink our ship either. I soooo knew about the Snape and Lily Potter thing!! Well, it was more of a few weak guesses. That 19 years later thing sounded like it was written in fanfic form. The names sounded very very VERY fanfic-like, and I wish they'd expanded more on what happened to EVERYONE not just the mains. The 19 Years Later thing is like she stole it from a fanfictioin writer... It needs to be expanded more!! What happened to everyone else?!?!!?

I am soooo helping to ship Grey Lady/Blody Baron... Yes! *does happy dance* They are so cute, in a freaky, obsessive, dead, Snow White Queen kinda way. Aaaaaaaaaaaaamen.

Anyone else figure that unless Rowena Ravenclaw was channeling Virgin Mary that the Gray Lady must have had a father at some point?? 'Cause I am so curious as to who that is . . .

The epilogue (or lack of) really disappointed me.It was cheesy and told us nearly nothing of any importance.I don't actually care in the slightest about the kid ships, probably because Ginny annoys me so much, and the names of most of the kids were awful. I'd much rather have had a kind of "Where are they now?" type affair which included all the main characters like the teachers,Order and DA members, the trio etc, and told us what had happened to them, maybe a page per character or something, instead of what we had. I mean, what happened with Hermione's parents?Did she ever see them again? What happened to the rest of the Weasleys? What did the Death Eaters do after Voldemort pegged it? What are the jobs of all the other kids?Surely Hermione didn't just spend her whole life looking after the kids? And what happened to Min?
I have to have a mini-Min rant here because I loved her so much in this book. Her conversation with Filch was hysterical, her line to Slughorn "We duel to kill" that entire speech was brilliant, her battle with Snape,"Our Headmaster is taking a short break" (pointing at the Snape-shaped hole in the window)and of course taking control of everything, down to bringing suits of armour to life was excellent.
My favourite Min part? "A herd of galloping desks thundered past, shepherded by a sprinting Professor McGonagall. She appeared not to notice them. Her hair was down, and there was a gash on one cheek. As she turned the corner they heard her scream "CHARGE!" I was actually crying with laughter at that.Galloping desks is funny enough, then if you add in Min yelling "CHARGE!" at them it's almost too funny to bear.

that was quite possibly the best moment in any of hte books! HAve you seen Bedknobs nad Broomsticks? Great movie anyway, but there is a part at hte end with Angela Lansbury controlling all this armor in a battle against the Nazi's...kinda similar
