A/N : This story is dedicated to Cammie ! Thanks for the idea, hon ! And thanks for being such a wonderful friend !!
Albus Dumbledore was in a very good mood today : it was a lovely summer’s day, the sun was shining brightly, it was a Saturday and he would go to a party tonight that was sure to be fun. It was the birthday of a very good friend of his – Nicholas Flamel. But maybe the best thing about the birthday party was that Nicholas had told him that he was of course free to bring a woman with him. And so Albus had asked Minerva McGonagall to accompany him and she had agreed immediately.
As he walked around Hogsmeade, Albus’ thoughts wandered to her. Minerva. She was his best friend – but he wanted to be more to her than just that. They had started to form a friendship when he had helped her to become an animagus in her last year as a student at Hogwarts. They had stayed in contact by owl and the occasional visit until two years ago, when she had returned to Hogwarts to teach. Since then their friendship had deepened constantly – so much that one day Albus had realised that he had fallen in love with her. That had been about a year ago now, but he hadn’t told her yet, because he wasn’t sure if she felt the same for him and he was afraid to ruin their friendship if that wasn’t the case. Sure, they flirted a lot, but she had never given him any indication that she might be in love with him, too.
But Minerva was – only Albus didn’t know because she’d never told him. She, too, pondered her feelings for him this afternoon. She was sitting in her office and trying to correct essays, but she found she couldn’t concentrate on her work at all. Her thoughts kept straying to Albus and their date this evening.
‘Wait at minute,’ she had thought at that point, ‘did I just think we’d be going out on a date this evening ?’ And she had had to admit to herself that she had indeed done so. And with good reason – it certainly had seemed like a date when Albus had asked her out. But Minerva didn’t dare to hope that. She had realised that she was in love with Albus almost the very day she had returned to Hogwarts as a teacher. She had had a crush on him since her seventh year and her animagus lessons with him, and that had come back full force when she had come back to Hogwarts. Only this time it wasn’t just a simple crush she realised, it was more. But she, too, was afraid to ruin their friendship if she were to tell him and he wouldn’t feel the same for her.
She gave up the essays, since she knew she’d never be able to concentrate on them again at the moment and decided to leave them in favour of a long hot – and hopefully relaxing – bath. After having been in the tub for about an hour she got out and got ready for the party. She dressed in a crimson dress that was a little tighter than her usual robes and accentuated her figure. Her hair went into a braid. After having put on a little necklace and a bracelet and just a little bit of make – up she was ready to go. And about five minutes later a knock could be heard on her door – Albus was right on time to fetch her. She smiled to herself and opened her door. Albus had to really restrain himself from letting his jaw hit the floor when he saw her. It took quite an amount of control, but he managed. When he could speak again he complimented her. “You look absolutely stunning, my dear.” Blushing, Minerva laughed softly and complimented his choice of robes ( he wore deep blue one ) as well. “Thanks ! So do you !” Albus offered her his arm. “Shall we ?” Minerva took it and nodded. “I believe we shall.”
They went out to the apparition spot and apparated to the Flamel – manor. They were greeted by Nicholas and his wife Perenelle. After congratulating him, Albus gave Nicholas his present – a little puppy dog, because he knew Nicholas always wanted one and Perenelle never agreed. But wanting to be sure she wouldn’t hex him, Albus had asked her before he got it and this time she had agreed.
They went inside. When they arrived in the dining room, Albus and Minerva noticed that the party only consisted of couples. They didn’t have the courage to ask why that was the case and so they silently decided that maybe they would get to know the reason for it later. Albus, however, had a suspicion. He had told Nicholas about his feelings for Minerva, because otherwise he thought he would’ve gone mad. He just had to tell somebody, and Nicholas was his oldest friend, so he had seemed the perfect choice. And now Albus suspected that Nicholas had told Perenelle about this and that the two of them had decided to play matchmaker for Minerva and himself. But he wasn’t sure so he kept his suspicions to himself.
Minerva and Albus were seated next to each other. They had a marvellous time during dinner and when the dessert, strawberries and whipped cream, arrived Albus started to get playful. He put some of the whipped cream on his finger and before Minerva knew what was happening, she had it on her nose. After a few seconds she looked at Albus, her eyes clearly showing her amusement and assuring him that she wasn’t really mad. “You’re going to pay for that – I promise you.” And without even really thinking about it she got up, stood in front of him and rubbed her nose against his face, so that now he had whipped cream all over his face. The whole room was laughing and Albus and Minerva soon joined in.
When they had calmed down they cleaned each other with a quick spell. Having finished the dessert, the party moved on to the sitting room. Nicholas and Perenelle had put away all the furniture and so they had a lot of space to dance. There was soft music playing in the background and it didn’t take long for the couples to start dancing. Albus took that as a sign that his suspicion about the matchmaking had been correct, but he happily played along. He bowed before Minerva. “May I have this dance, my fair lady ?” Minerva curtseyed. “Of course you may, dear sir.” Albus took her hand and they joined the other couples. They danced for quite some time. At some point the rain started drumming against the windows, but Albus and Minerva were so caught up in each other and the dance that they barely noticed it.
They only stopped dancing when Perenelle announced that the party had to move outside to see a surprise she had been organising for Nicholas. All of them were wondering what that surprise could be. When they were on the veranda, which thankfully was covered by a roof so the rain didn’t affect them, Perenelle told Nicholas what his surprise was. “I know how much you love fireworks, dear, so I just decided to organise one for you – the muggle way.” Nicholas was beaming at her and then kissed her.
They all enjoyed the fireworks. Perenelle had put a table with drinks on the veranda, so they could have a drink while watching the fireworks. When it was over the music suddenly turned louder, so that they could hear it out here without any problem. The rain stopped again pretty soon and so they decided to stay outside for a little longer. After a simple spell the lawn was dry again and the couples started to dance there. Minerva and Albus hadn’t finished their drinks yet so they just stood on the veranda and watched them. As soon as they had finished their drinks, though, Albus bowed again and asked her to dance with him another time. Minerva had just agreed when it started to rain again. She looked at Albus, who was leading her out onto the lawn anyway. “What do you think you’re doing ?” she wanted to know. “Well, you promised me a dance …” was the only answer she got as he pulled her close and started to lead her around the lawn, which by now they had to themselves since all of the others had gone inside when the rain had started again. Minerva sent him a glare that would have frightened anyone. Anyone except Albus Dumbledore. He just ignored it, smiled at her and continued to dance with her. After a while Minerva didn’t try to protest anymore, knowing she had no chance anyway. And as Albus pulled her yet closer to him she even managed to forget the rain and her wet clothes for a little time. All too soon the song stopped and Albus lead her back onto the veranda.
He cast a drying – spell on both of them and then he kissed Minerva on the cheek. “Thank you for the dance, my dear.” She looked at him with an expression in her eyes that he couldn’t exactly identify before replying, “You’re welcome.” At that moment, Albus decided that he had to tell her how he felt about her. He just had to take the chance. He looked at her not hiding his feelings anymore and when Minerva met his eyes again she could see the love in them. She just still couldn’t bring herself to believe that this look was really meant for her. Not until Albus brought his head closer to hers and whispered “I have to confess that I’m hopelessly in love with you. Have been for quite some time now … I love you, Minerva !” She looked at him with wonder and love evident in her eyes. Then she whispered back “Then I have to make a confession as well. It’s the same for me. I love you, too, Albus !”
Upon hearing those words Albus began to smile broadly and his eyes had a special sparkle in them when he bent down to kiss her on the lips. The kiss started gentle at first, but it soon became deeper and deeper. When they had to break apart to breathe they could hear the rest of the guests applauding in the sitting room. They smiled at each other shyly and Albus bent down to kiss her again. After that second kiss he took her hand and led her inside again.
