Today's picture is from the 1987 movie "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne". Maggie plays Judith, a lonely Irish spinster who is fond of her drink. This is, in my opinion, one of Maggie's greatest roles.

Today's picture is from the 1963 production of "The Recruiting Officer", starring Maggie as Silvia, Robert Stephens as Brazen, Laurence Olivier as Captain Plume, and Lynn Redgrave as Rose. This was one of the first plays that Maggie performed in at the National Theatre; according to Robert Stephens' autobiography that they fell in love during rehearsals for this play.

Today is the inauguration of our very first theme week, featuring Maggie and Judi Dench. They've been friends for nearly fifty years, ever since they were at the Old Vic together in the late '50s. Both superb actresses in their own right, they've performed together in three movies ("A Room With A View", "Tea With Mussolini", and "Ladies In Lavender") and several plays, the most recent being "The Breath of Life". Today's picture was provided by jeanbrodie from LiveJournal. It is a cast photo of "the Old Vic gang" in the late 1950s. The people in the photo, from left to right, are Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Moyra Fraser, Alec McCowen, Rosemary Ackland, and John Moffatt.

It's still our "Maggie and Judi" theme week! Today's picture is of Maggie and Judi at the "Tea With Mussolini" premiere. "Tea With Mussolini" was the second of three movies Maggie and Judi have made together; the movie also starred Lily Tomlin, Joan Plowright (aka Lady Olivier), and Cher.

Today's picture is from the 2002 production of "The Breath of Life", starring Maggie as Madeleine Palmer and Judi Dench as Frances Beale. A summary of the play can be found here: www.complete-review.com/reviews/hared/breathofl.htm . This was the first time they've acted on stage together since their Old Vic days.

Today's picture is a caricature that I found somewhere - I can't remember where - drawn, obviously, by someone named Gary. I thought it was so amusing, and is the best caricature I've seen of the two of them.

I'm not sure when today's picture was taken (I know it was taken sometime between 1992 and 2000) Taken in 2002, after a performance of "The Breath of Life", when the Clintons visited London. (thanks, micha!)

If I remember correctly, it was taken after a performance of "Breath of Life", which the three Clintons visited. But that would make it 2002.
