I can't clearly remember now when, or even where, I met Maggie Smith in New York, but when I did meet her I fell for her. Maggie was one of many stars in an annual and famous review on Broadway called New Faces. Everything went well between us that first night, and I began to date her after her show. Maggie would have been around 22 at the time, I suppose, and apart from her dazzling looks and figure, she had, as you might imagine, a fizzing personality and a wicked sense of humour. I was well and truly hooked, but I had begun to suspect she wasn't. I discovered my suspicions were well-founded in rather humiliating circumstances. Judy Garland had made a huge comeback and was appearing at the apex of variety, the Palace Theatre New York. She was giving a midnight matinee for actors and entertainers, and I asked Maggie if she would like to go with me. Oh yes, she most certainly would. 'I'll book two seats in the stalls and come round after your show and pick you up.' 'Lovely,' she said. The evening arrived. I hurried excitedly to her stage door, the tickets safely in my pocket. The stage door keeper, who knew me well by now, said with awe in his voice: 'Bing Crosby has just gone up to Miss Smith's dressing room and he was carrying a large bunch of flowers.' Now, Elvis was big at that time, but Bing was BIG TIME with capital letters. I knocked and went in. Maggie was standing looking lovely with a large bouquet in her hands and there was the unmistakable figure of Bing Crosby, in a dinner jacket. 'Can I introduce you to Bing Crosby?' said Maggie. I said hello, and shook his hand. Bing then said: 'Miss Smith, I would consider it an honour if you would join me in my box for the Judy Garland midnight matinee tonight.' 'Oh, I'd love to,' said Maggie without so much as a glance in my direction. I made my excuses and left. I enjoyed enormously the Judy Garland show (she brought on both her little girls), despite the empty seat beside me. I didn't see Dame Maggie Smith again for another 50 years, but when we did meet we were charming to each other. She looked just as beautiful as when I'd first met her. My only regret is that I have never acted with her. So what with one thing and another, by the time we boarded the plane for London six months later I honestly thought as it took off: 'If this plane crashes, I at least won't mind, because I have had the most wonderful life.' And I was just 20 years old! -Peter Bowles From this article: www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1265246/Fisticuffs-Krays-night-Bing-Crosby-stole-girlfriend-Peter-Bowles-uproarious-colourful-love-life.html
