Today's picture is from the 1965 production of Much Ado About Nothing, starring Maggie as Beatrice, Robert Stephens as Benedick, and Ian McKellen as Claudio. Directed by Franco Zefferelli, the props onstage consisted of donkeys, a foot-long cigar held by Albert Finney, and people playing the part of furniture in some scenes. A clip can be seen on the Maggie Smith at the BBC DVDs. Today you also get a bonus article - enjoy!

Although there are many other plays Maggie was in during her time at the National Theatre, I decided to end this week with a picture from one of her favourite roles. Directed by Ingmar Bergman, this version of Hedda Gabler did not begin with George Tesman in conversation with his aunt; rather, Bergman put Maggie-as-Hedda at the forefront, smoking nervously. In most productions Hedda's pregnancy is only hinted at, yet in this one it was very obvious. Originally, Bergman cast Robert Stephens in the role of George Tesman, Hedda's husband, and Jeremy Brett as Eilert Loevborg, the lover, but Robert persuaded him to cast him in the role of Loevborg and Jeremy in the role of Tesman. The stage was divided into two sections by a curtain; one side had the play, the other side showed the off-stage characters (mainly Hedda) "exploring hidden emotions". At the end of the play, Hedda shoots herself when looking into a mirror; you get the sense that she isn't quite sure if she'll commit suicide.

Today's picture is from the 1999 movie The Last September. It is set in Ireland in the 1920s and stars Maggie, Michael Gambon, Jane Birkin, Fiona Shaw, and Keeley Hawes.

Today's picture is from the 1981 film "Clash of the Titans". The screenplay was written by Maggie's second husband, Beverley Cross, and this movie marks the last time she and Laurence Olivier worked together. For her role as Thetis, Maggie won a Saturn award (presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror films).

Today's picture is a promo shot for the first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It's one of my favourite Maggie-as-Minerva pics.

Today's picture is from the 1974/5 Charles Laurence comedy "Snap!" Maggie plays Connie Hudson. While the play supposedly was horrible (it was about venereal disease, and what's funny about that?), Maggie looks great it that hat!

Great picks. Although I do not think you can get Maggie to look very geeky! XD
And the last pick. Great legs for being seventy something. Which means Minerva has great legs. Albus is a lucky sod no? XD
