A/N:: This was written for Catwoman99 for the Secret Santa thing. Special thanks to childminerva for bringing Secret Santa to us! ;D
FanFic 100 Challenge #:: 034- Not Enough
Candlelight dances wildly against the Headmaster's office walls. An unfinished game of chess lies abandoned on the table. He takes a step closer; she can feel his unsteady breathing against her face. For an instant their lips brush together, but she immediately pulls away. As she turns her head and takes a step back, he catches a sight of the tears that fill her eyes to the brim.
"I think I should leave," she says, her voice trembling.
"Minerva, don't..."
He takes her chin and turns her face to his. His blue eyes darken with emotion.
"Tell me," he says, "Tell me you don't feel something between us. Tell me you don't lie in bed alone at night, thinking about me."
Minerva shakes her head slightly as a tear rolls down her cheeks.
"I do think of you, Albus," she cries. "My final thought every night as I fall asleep is of you, and it terrifies me because then I realize how deeply my feelings for you have become."
"Why are you so afraid?" he asks, gingerly wiping the tears from her cheeks and eyes.
Minerva lowers her head, ashamed of the way she feels.
"I love you," she says, "But what if love is not enough?"
Albus takes a deep breath.
"One realizes he is in love not when he can simply imagine living the rest of his life with a particular person but when he determines he cannot live without her," he says with a smile. "We can make it work... if you're willing to try."
He reaches into his pocket, pulls out a diamond ring, and slips it onto her finger. Tears begin to fall freely from Minerva's eyes as she throws her arms around his neck. She smiles through the tears.
"I am."
