ENOUGH FOR NOW
A/N: Written for micha for Christmas 2009
It was hopeless, and she was hopelessly in love with him. How could she resist? He was strong, clever, handsome... self-deprecating at times, but she saw through his self-condemnation. How could she not? She had loved him for years, ever since she had met him – or nearly, at least. But he was unable, she believed, to love her in return – how could he ever love her?
It gave her hope when he escorted her to her rooms after dinner that night. His voice was soft and soothing as they chatted lightly, speaking of inconsequential things. She felt her heart flutter in her chest as he squeezed her hand lightly, turning the corner to her bedroom.
‘I suppose this is good-night,’ he said, her hand still resting within his. She made no attempt to move as he gazed down into her eyes. For a moment, she thought he was about to tell her something, but then he stopped.
‘Good-night,’ he murmured, ending his moment of indecision. She sighed.
‘Good-night,’ she replied.
He stood there another moment before leaning forward, his lips lightly brushing her cheek, before he released her hand and turned away.
As he left her at her door, she pressed her palm against her cheek. It was enough, she thought. Enough for now.
