FanFic 100 Challenge #:: 041- Shapes
Minerva awoke in a start from a restless sleep. She looked around in the darkness, waiting and hoping to hear the sound of another person in the room, but nothing but the desperate sound of her own breathing reverberated in the night. Tears poured from her eyes as she swept her hand over the empty coldness of the bedsheets in the place beside her- Albus's side of the bed.
The subject of the argument was irrelevant, as was whose fault the fight had been. They were both wrong for the unkind words said to each other, and Minerva felt as if every syllable had been etched onto her heart. It was quite unlike either of them to be in disagreement with the other, which undoubtedly made the result of the situation much harder on both of them.
Minerva sat up in bed and wiped her tears as she thought back to the moment Albus had left. He had tried to talk to her, tried to make it better in his own way, but Minerva refused to let him come near her. She cringed as she thought of the words she had shouted at him. "Fine, just leave! Now!" She had instinctively slammed the door in his face and yet only a moment later had fought the urge to run after him.
I didn't mean it, she thought to herself as she cupped her face in her hands, allowing the tears to collect like small lakes in the valley of her palms. I'd give anything to have him back. She shuddered as she thought where he may be at that very moment as she said a quick prayer for his safety. A heavy weight seemed to lie upon her chest, leaving her unable of thinking of anything other than her husband and wondering if he would ever return to her. Life was not worth the suffering without Albus, after all.
Minerva lay back in bed, closing her eyes as her endless thoughts and worries washed over her like a bitter winter breeze. She listened deep into the night, hoping beyond hope for a sign of Albus's approach, chastising herself for believing for a moment that what was most likely the distant sound of a tree branch scratching against the house was Albus's footsteps instead. She opened her eyes once more, turning her face towards the moonlight lightly pouring through the window at the other side of the room. She stared into the void of the night, allowing her eyes to slowly adjust to the darkness. Every shape and sound Minerva could make out in the room reminded her of Albus. The creaking noise caused by a soft gust of wind against the window became Albus's footsteps creeping closer to her, his vibrant blue robes tossed over a chair became his strong body coming to hold her in his arms to comfort her, to forgive her...
"Albus," Minerva called out to no one before realizing she had spoken aloud. "Oh Albus, come back to me."
She was imagining things again. This time she could actually hear him walk towards her, feel the weight of him sink down onto the bed. His arms were around her now, pulling her close to him..
No, she was not imagining this, after all.
"Minerva, I'm so sorry for everything," Albus whispered into her ear, the faint evidence of tears in his voice.
"I'm sorry too," she mumbled as she wrapped her arms securely around his neck. "I was afraid I had lost you."
"No, I could never leave you," he replied, catching Minerva's lips in a passionate kiss.
Minerva rested her head against Albus's shoulder as he caressed her tenderly. She sighed contently as she felt herself both audibly and silently releasing her inner fears to him.
"I don't want to be alone," she whispered.
Albus kissed her forehead and ran a hand through her long ebony hair.
"You'll never have to be."
