Ok, in this one i decided to go at Minerva from a different angle. We all know she is strong and confident, but in this fic she is going to be very unsure of herself as a woman. It will be up to Mr. Dumbledore to help her regain her confidence.
Chapter One Minerva raced along the corridors of Hogwarts heading for the front entrance hall hoping that the school’s Headmaster had waited for her. She was over ten minutes late and they were going out to dinner tonight. As she sped along the hallways the aforementioned Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, was pacing as he waited for his Deputy, who was uncharacteristically late. An observer would have mentally noted how well dressed the Headmaster was in sky blue robes that matched his eyes, and accentuated his white hair. As Albus turned for close to the hundredth time he saw Minerva practically running toward him, and he was disappointed to see her dressed in her normal school robes. Coming to stop in front of him and out of breath she said, “Sorry Albus…Longbottom lost his…he lost his toad again. Had to search…the whole dormitory before we found him,” she finished as she straightened her robes. “That’s alright, my dear. Minerva, I can wait should you wish to change,” Albus replied looking her over. “What is wrong with my robes?” she asked looking down at herself. “The place we are dining is fancy, so dress robes are in order. May I?” he asked raising his wand. After a moments hesitation Minerva nodded and felt a rustling of clothes as her attire changed. Albus looked over his work and smiled: she was wearing a midnight blue gown cut lower in the front than she would normally wear, but not too low, and her hair was cascading down her back. “Beautiful. My dear, you are beautiful.” “Oh hush Albus. I’ve never been beautiful,” replied Minerva blushing. “Minerva, you have always been beautiful and now you look positively enchanting. Let’s go, my dear.” Turning toward the door Albus noticed Minerva had not joined him, and looking back she was firmly rooted to the spot still looking at her dress. “Minerva,” Albus started cautiously but she interrupted him, “Albus, could you conjure a mirror for me…please,” she added looking up into his eyes. Doing as directed he watched with interest as Minerva approached the mirror and gazed intently at her image. Albus, also, noticed that Minerva didn’t carry herself as she normally did, with such confidence and strength, but instead she looked, almost, timid. “Albus,” she asked in a soft voice, “why did you dress me like this?” “I wanted you to look nice for our first date, do you not like it?” “D-date? T-this is a…a date?” Minerva asked in shock turning abruptly around to face him. “You didn’t know that,” Albus asked in return just as shocked. Minerva didn’t answer him directly, but rather mumbled to herself, “date…a…date with me.” Albus approached Minerva, and carefully lifted her chin up so she would look at him, “Yes, a date with you and only you. Minerva, what’s wrong? You seem so, I don’t know, unsure. Are you ok with this, I mean you don’t have to go,” he added half-heartedly and not convincing even to his own ears. “I am unsure, Albus. I’ve never been on a date before where the intention wasn’t to use me, and I haven’t been on one period in a really long time,” she said hesitantly. Albus was shocked and it showed so Minerva hastily added, “I’m sorry. I will understand if you don’t want to go.” That seemed to snap Albus out of his trance, and he quickly said, “No, it was a surprise but I definitely want to go to dinner with you. Speaking of, may I escort you to the edge of the grounds,” he asked offering her his arm. Smiling shyly Minerva accepted and they left the front entrance hall. “You want to know what happened don’t you,” Minerva asked quietly. “Tell me only what you want to, my dear, but I assure you my intention has never been and never will be to use you.” “I know, Albus. It would not be in your nature to do something like that to someone,” which is one of the reasons I like you,” Minerva added still looking at the ground. Albus leaned down to Minerva’s ear, stopping their movements, and whispered, “I like you too, you know a lot to be honest. I happen to think you are most beautiful, intelligent, and wonderful woman I have ever met.” Minerva’s face was a bright red when he lifted his head to look at her, and when he placed a gently kiss to on her cheek she almost gasped. They continued walking into Hogsmeade in silence, which gave Albus a chance to reflect on this new side to Minerva. ‘She is always so confident, but she has no confidence in herself as a woman. I could kill the men that made her this way.’ Albus took it upon himself from that moment on, not only to court Minerva; he had planned to do that anyway, but to restore her confidence in herself as a woman. He only hoped she would let him. Dinner was wonderful, and being great friends before the date they had plenty to talk about. Walking back toward the school Albus suggested that they sit by the lake for awhile to look at the stars. Agreeing, Minerva was soon sitting beside of Albus on a bank overlooking the lake. A few moments of silence in which Albus had taken Minerva’s hand, she decided to speak: “I want to thank you for a wonderful evening, Albus. I truly enjoyed myself, but I if you want to continue this then I think you need to know what happened to me, if you want to that is,” she added looking at the ground.

Chapter One (Part II) “Minerva I would like to court you, my dear, so unless you are opposed to the idea I will most certainly be seeing you outside of the school in the future, and quite often might I add,” Albus replied bringing her hand up to his lips to place a chaste kiss upon the back. Minerva took a deep breath, “Well, it has only happened three times but each time they only wanted things from me. The first was in my fifth year at Hogwarts and he was in Gryffindor. The short of it is that he asked me to the Christmas ball, but never showed up to pick me up. It turns out he only wanted homework from me, and since I refused to just give him my work he decided to leave me alone. The second was during my auror training. We dated for almost a year, but it seems he only wanted me to help him get through the training. We would spend a lot of weekends dueling and practicing, so when he passed he dumped me. I found out later that he had been seeing another girl the whole time. As to the third that was not long before I came here to teach. Though I did not know it I had a reputation in the Ministry of Magic, and this particular gentleman, well rogue perhaps is a better term, made a bet with his friend that he could get me to sleep with him.” Pausing to take a deep breath Minerva continued in a little bit more of a shaky voice, “He went as far as proposing to get me into his bed. When he proposed, I accepted, but I also said that since he had waited that long he could wait until he married me, I suspected something at the time so I wanted to test him. I won’t lie I had hoped that my suspicions were incorrect, but they were not. Nothing as happened since I came to teach here. It is pathetic really, and I think even worse when said out loud,” Minerva added as a single tear rolled down her cheek. Albus didn’t say a word; instead he wrapped his arms around Minerva and maneuvered her head to his shoulder. Hurt and unsure she was, but weak she was not. Minerva McGonagall had always been a strong woman so no more tears followed that solitary one down her cheek. She simply took comfort in the feeling of Albus’ arms around her, it had been so long since she had been held and to be honest she didn’t think she had ever been held this way, it just felt different. “Minerva,” Albus started softly after a while, “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. No one should have to go through something like that.” “It’s ok, Albus. It all happened a long time ago.” They sat there for a little while longer till Albus noticed Minerva was shivering. Taking off his outer robe he draped it over her shoulders, then standing up he helped her up as well. She looked enchanting he thought wearing her gown and his oversized robe over it. When they reached her room Minerva had tensed up, and Albus was trying hard to figure out why. “Here,” she said taking his robe off, “thank you.” “You keep it. I think it looks better on you, even if it is big,” Albus replied taking a step closer to her. Minerva smiled until she realized how close he was, and Albus suddenly understood why she was so nervous. Tentatively Albus cupped her cheek with his hand, and very softly brushed his lips against hers. If Minerva hadn’t been so scared and kept her eyes open she never would have believed it happened, but then he kissed her again, a little longer, and a little more pressure. The third time he kissed her Minerva closed her eyes, and responded. When he pulled back this time Minerva really hoped that he would kiss her again, but he didn’t. “Goodnight, my dear. Sweet dreams,” and placing a kiss on her forehead Albus headed to his rooms. Once inside of her rooms Minerva absentmindedly touched her lips, and sighed. Falling asleep with one of those goofy grins on her face Minerva slept peacefully. When Minerva woke up the next morning there were a dozen red roses suspended over her head, and pulling them down she noticed a note accompanied it: I hope you slept well, my angel. I am anxiously awaiting your arrival at breakfast so I may see your beautiful face. A. ‘He is such a sweet man,” she thought. Getting ready that day was difficult for Minerva, she didn’t know whether to just look like her normal self or to try and dress up for Albus. The problem with dressing up was she didn’t know exactly what to do, so she ended up doing nothing. Promising herself that she would get reacquainted with her more ‘girly side’ she headed off to breakfast.

Oh, this is so sweet! Don't you wish all men were as sensitive as Albus? I hope you continue - all the way to the lemon dessert!

Oh, this is so wonderful... *sigh* You will continue this, won't you? It actually makes a lot of sense. Take a character as Hermione. I believe she's not that self confident as well. Anyway I loved the *dare I say* start of this.

This is great, I can totally see Minerva being that way. Confidence is something that definitely doesn't naturally extend to all areas of your life and intelligent, independent women often have trouble seeing themselves as "women." (Yes, I speak from experience, wish there was someone like Albus out there for me...) Hoping there's more!

I totally sympathize with Minerva. I'm very unsure and timid around guys, although I'm more comfortable around guys that have become friends. Anyway, I can't wait to read more.

Chapter Two I too understand what Minerva is going through here, in the sense that I have always felt rather unsure of myself when around men. I just keep looking for my Prince, my friend and I have decided ours are out there just in another country!! Oh, that is an excuse to travel, is it not??? When Minerva reached the Great Hall she stopped momentarily, and her breath caught in her throat when she saw the Headmaster already sitting in his seat. Upon reaching the staff table Minerva spoke to various members of the staff before taking her place beside of Albus. “Good morning Professor McGonagall, I trust you slept well?” Albus inquired. Minerva wondered why he had called her by her formal title, and she wondered if something had gone wrong. Sensing her confusion Albus squeezed her hand under the table, which caused her to jump ever so slightly, and whispered in her ear, “Just maintaing the professional look, sweetheart.” Minerva nodded, and graced him with a shy smile. They never let go of the other’s hand for the duration of the breakfast. And when Albus insisted upon walking with Minerva to her classroom on the premise that they had some Hogwarts business to discuss he had no intentions of actually mentioning Hogwarts. “My dear, do you think I could steal you away from your work tonight for a game of chess,” Albus asked once they were out of ear shot. Smiling up at him Minerva replied, “Yes, Albus, I would like that very much.” Turning away to leave Albus was called back, and very quickly Minerva gave him a peck on the lips before turning into her classroom and closing the door. It was about eleven in the morning when Poppy Pompfrey, the school nurse, looked up from her desk to see Minerva McGonagall walking into the Hospital wing. “Minerva, what can I do for you? Are you ill?” Poppy asked getting up from her desk. “No, Poppy, I’m fine. I was actually wondering if you could do me a favor.” Pausing Poppy only nodded her head for her to continue, “Well, you see you wear make-up don’t you?” Poppy was not expecting this question and only nodded. Minerva continued very quickly, “welliwaswonderingificouldborrowsome.” She had said it so fast and without taking a breath Poppy had not understood one word of what Minerva had said, “Minerva, you are going to have to repeat that. I didn’t hear one word, and what is wrong with you today? You seem nervous.” Poppy asked concerned. Taking a deep breath Minerva said, slowly this time, “well, I was wondering if I could borrow some…of your make-up,” she added after a pause. Without thinking Poppy exclaimed, “Whatever for?” Minerva flushed crimson, and in a voice barely audible said, “I have a date.” Poppy was shocked, but once over the initial surprise she smiled, “I’m happy for you. So you want to dress up for him do you?” Poppy almost enjoyed getting to Minerva like this, but chose to give her friend some peace, “Yes you can borrow some. Wait here.” Later that evening Minerva was sitting in front of her vanity trying very hard not to cry. She had spent the last couple of hours trying to make herself look nicer for Albus, but to no avail. She just couldn’t figure this stuff out, what exactly the eyeliner was for, or how to apply it and she had almost poked her eye out with the mascara. She was so frustrated, which caused her to throw her hand mirror at the opposite wall only to see it shatter into a hundred pieces. All she wanted to do was look nice for him, and she was failing miserably. Tears fell down her face when she looked into the mirror and crying she slowly washed her face removing all signs of her attempt to look nice. Lying down on her bed Minerva cried, and she cried so hard she fell asleep. Albus was worried. Minerva was thirty minutes late, so he decided to go looking for her. After receiving no answer when he knocked on her door he muttered the password, and found her asleep on her bed. He didn’t think she had been that tired, but when he bent down close enough to her face he could see the stains of her tears. Looking around the room he put two and two together: the make up on the vanity table, the smashed mirror by the wall on the opposite side of the floor. She had tried to dress up for him. ‘Oh, Minerva,” he thought. Knowing she would not want to wake up with him there, he cleaned the mess up and put her underneath her bed clothes. Leaving her a note on her vanity, Albus bid the sleeping form goodnight. Minerva woke up the next morning with a headache from all her crying, and when she looked around her room she immediately knew he had been there. In that moment knowing she had stood him up, knowing he had seen her failure, never had Minerva felt more ashamed. Getting up slowly Minerva approached her vanity and spotted the note Albus had left for her, Darling, I hope you will forgive my just coming into your rooms last night, but when you didn’t show up for your chess game I got worried. I do hope you will agree to give it another try tonight seeing as you now owe me a game. Minerva, you don’t need to wear all this stuff for me. I think you are beautiful without it, and would much prefer to see your gorgeous face as it is. A. Minerva appreciated Albus’ kind words, but they quite possibly made her feel even worse. Rising she got ready for the day. But before she could leave for breakfast there was a knock on her door. Opening it she found Albus Dumbledore standing in front of her door holding flowers. When Minerva just stood there staring at him, Albus asked, “May I come in, my dear?” “Oh, yes of course. I’m sorry, Albus” Minerva replied quickly moving out of his way. Once inside Albus said, “You are looking very beautiful this morning.” That was most definitely the wrong thing to say, and Minerva couldn’t help it she started to cry. Quickly bridging the gap between them Albus enveloped Minerva in his embrace. “I’m sorry, Minerva.” “Oh, Albus it isn’t your fault. I just feel like…” here she just trailed off. “Like what, sweetheart?” “Like a failure, like a complete and utter failure as…as, well as a woman,” Minerva said weakly. Albus thought that was what she was going to say. “Minerva look at me,” and when she did as requested he continued while placing her hand over his heart, “do you feel that, Minerva?” Indeed she did, and was rather surprised at how fast his heart was beating. “You do that to me, my dear. Whenever I’m near you my heart starts to race, because you excite me. At night all my dreams are about you, and when I’m with you I’m as happy as I can possibly be. You would not have this effect on me if you were a failure, darling. You have been hurt so many times before you can’t see yourself as a woman, in the sense of how a man would see you. But I do see you as a woman, Minerva, as a very attractive woman who has quite the effect on me.” When Albus was finished Minerva threw her arms around her neck and hung on for dear life, though muffled by his shoulder Albus still heard what she had to say, “How did some woman not snatch you before now?” “Because I’ve been waiting for you,” Albus stated quietly. Minerva leaned back just enough to look him in the eye before she leaned in to his him. This kiss wasn’t the peck she gave him yesterday, and when he ran his tongue along her bottom lip she granted him access. Still tentative Minerva tensed up when he first deepened the kiss, but it didn’t take her long to cling to him tightly returning the kiss with equal passion. Breaking away from each other Albus leaned his head against her forehead, and said, “They have been told to start breakfast without us, so don’t worry about being late.” “I wasn’t. To be honest I hadn’t even thought of that. You are just too distracting Professor Dumbledore,” Minerva said smiling up at him. “Now you had better be going, Albus. Someone probably shouldn’t see you leave my room in the morning,” but she made no move to extract herself from his arms. “Kicking me out already, are you?” Albus replied teasing as he leaned down to kiss her again. After this kiss Minerva did pull out of his embrace, and walked him to the door. Whispering she said, “I’ll see you tonight.” With one final kiss good-bye the couple went about their normal day.

Chapter Three
It had been three weeks since the start of Albus and Minerva’s relationship; neither could remember ever being this happy before. Over the last few weeks Minerva’s confidence had grown, but she was still nervous about her role in a romantic relationship and whether Albus was happy. Deciding it was her turn to do something for Albus, Minerva approached him one night after dinner. Cuddled before a fire in his sitting room Minerva broached the subject, “Albus, I was wondering…well do you have plans for us this weekend?” “Not yet, anything you wish to do,” Albus asked running his fingers through her hair. Whenever they were together Minerva left her hair down, much to Albus’ delight. Sitting up Minerva replied, “Yes, I want to organize what we do this weekend. I want it to be a surprise. When could you be available on Saturday?” Chuckling at Minerva’s excitement he responded, “Well, I think I could be ready by noon. Is that soon enough?” “That’s perfect! Oh, Albus are you sure?” Minerva asked with some of her old apprehension back. “Yes, my dear. I’m very interested in what you will have planned for me,” he replied tugging her back into his arms. Minerva brought his face down to hers and kissed him hard and long in thanks for his agreement. When they released each other Albus said, “I was just going to hold you, but I do believe I like your idea better.” Minerva started to giggle, but was stopped by Albus’ lips on hers. They spent the rest of the evening snogging each other senseless. Albus didn’t see Minerva much the rest of the week, because she spent every free moment planning Saturday. She wanted everything to be just perfect. Of course she made sure he got some kisses every day, but she would never stay. Albus found himself dreaming about spending all of Saturday with this extraordinary woman, and he couldn’t wait. Saturday arrived none to soon for both Professors, and Minerva was anxiously awaiting Albus’ arrival on the front steps of the school at noon. When he arrived Minerva greeted him with a quick kiss, after making sure no one was around, and then led him to the forbidden forest. “My dear, why are we going in here?” “Be patient, darling, you are going to find out in just a moment.” Albus smiled she had never called him darling before. Noticing his smile Minerva inquired after the cause of it, “Albus, what are you smiling at?” “You called me darling; you’ve never done that before. I like it, especially with your Scottish accent.” Playfully hitting him on the shoulder Minerva didn’t respond, but just led him further and further into the forest. Finally they came out into a beautiful clearing. The trees surrounded it, wild flowers were growing all on the inside, and a small brook ran through the middle. Albus noticed a picnic basket was laid out upon the ground, and he smiled. “Minerva when did you find this place?” Moving him toward the picnic basket she responded, “Well, after the Christmas ball incident I just left the castle to seek solace elsewhere, and I went into the forbidden forest. I wandered for awhile and found this clearing. I have always gone here to think, and until today I’ve never taken someone with me.” Wrapping his arms around her from behind Albus leaned down to whisper, “I’m honored.” Turning around Minerva took his hands and led him over the picnic basket. They spent the afternoon talking of various topics, and Albus insisted that they take their shoes off and walk in the brook. Minerva was skeptical, but eventually gave in. As she stepped into the brook Minerva chose a particularly slippery rock, and went crashing into the brook. Quickly going over to see if she was ok Albus was not prepared to be pulled down beside of her in the water. “You will pay for that, my dear.” “Will I, darling, how so?” Minerva teased back. The glint in his eyes made Minerva start to move away, but before she could Albus took a handful of water and flung it at her. Her mouth literally dropped open before she yelled, “Albus Percevial Wulfric Brian Dumbledore you did not just do that!” “Oh but I did Minerva Catherine McGonagall, and I’m about to do it again,” that said Albus flung another handful of water in her direction. Bending down in the water Minerva said, “Alright, mister, this is war!” Anyone looking on this scene would have been struck dumb by the sight of their strict Transfigurations Professor having a water fight with their Headmaster, but Minerva had to admit she had had the time of her life. Walking back to the castle Minerva informed Albus that he was to shower, and change into dress robes for her surprise was not over yet. An hour later the couple was making their way toward Hogsmeade, and Madam Rosmerta’s. Minerva had arranged it with the proprietress so she and Albus would have a room to themselves upstairs for dinner, and then some dancing. Walking into the room Minerva gasped, Rosmerta had everything just how she wanted it. Candles floating in the air were the only light that dimly lit a table for two in the middle of the room, and soft music was playing in the background. After accepting Minerva’s hug of thanks Rosmerta left leaving the two lovers alone. “Minerva, this is wonderful. I don’t think I’m going to be able to compete with this in the future,” Albus said as he pulled her chair out for her before sitting down himself. “Oh, Albus, don’t be ridiculous, but I’m very glad you like it.” Though dinner was great Albus’ favorite part was the dancing. Minerva was very graceful when she felt comfortable, and they danced every dance imaginable. “This has been the best day, my love, and thank you.” Minerva stopped dancing when he said my love, and she stared up at him. “Minerva what’s wrong?” Albus asked concerned. “You’ve never called me, my love before,” she replied quietly. “Is that alright, I mean if you aren’t ready for that then I completely understand…” Minerva place two fingers over his mouth silencing the rest of his thought. “No, I like it very much Albus. In fact I wanted to tell you that, well…” taking a deep breath Minerva finished, “I love you.” Bending down to softly kiss her Albus whispered in her ear, “I love you too.” Minerva had never been so happy before, but the happiness was replaced with fear as they slowly walked back up to the castle. The most pathetic part of her love life, to her, was the fact that she was still a virgin. She thought it sad that someone her age had never experienced the act of making love before, and she felt so embarrassed. Once she had met some random guy in a pub, and had gone with him back to his apartment just so she could say she had had sex, but as he was opening the door she turned around and ran. She just couldn’t do that with some stranger, especially not her first time, so here she was a little over seventy and nervous about what the rest of the night held. She didn’t know if that was what Albus was thinking at all, but it was in the air and tonight just seemed so right. The thing that scared her the most was pleasing him. She so wanted him to be happy, and what was more important to her was she wanted to be the cause of his happiness. Upon entering his sitting room Albus gently took her hand, and led her to his bedroom. Before opening the door he looked for the longest time in her eyes: he saw the apprehension but he also saw the desire. Bending down to kiss her he said, “It is up to you, love, it is up to you.” Minerva leaned behind him and opened the door. Ever the gentleman Albus placed Minerva’s wants and needs before his, and he wasn’t surprised to find out that this was her first time. Minerva’s confidence grew with every moan elicited from Albus, and when he called her name out as he found release her confidence as a woman had, almost, been completely restored. Though the students didn’t notice it the female members of the staff noticed how Minerva walked the next day. She had always walked with an air of confidence, but this was something different and very feminine. As she passed they all raised their eyebrows at the other in question and suggestion of what made their Deputy Headmistress appear as she did. Poppy was the only one who knew for certain at the cause, not who, but at least what.
One more chapter to go.

This story makes me smile so much and I can certainly identify with every bit of it. Including the meeting a stranger in a pub and running away bit...er, overshare. I'm so looking forward to the end. Sigh, another fairy tale to hope for....
(I agree, makeup is way overrated, if I didn't have blond eyelashes that require mascara I wouldn't wear any at all. Good for Minerva for giving up on it!)
