I wrote this a while ago... let me know if you like it. Comments and corrections are welcome!
Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley snuck down the hallway that led to the library. Each of them had hardly taken a breath since leaving their rooms and Ron was shaking.
None of them wanted to think about getting caught; still it seemed to be the only thing they were thinking about. However the irony of the event was as humorless as it could possibly be.
“What if we get caught, Harry?” Ron asked, voicing what all three of them were thinking. Harry took a deep breath.
“We’ll just have a few house points taken.” Hermione reasoned, hoping she sounded calmer than she felt. Harry and Ron stared at her as though she had sprouted antlers from her forehead.
“Not if Snape or McGonagall catch us!” Harry hissed. Silence once more fell over the trio. “Maybe we should just return to the tower.” Harry’s confidence was severely suffering with the thoughts of Professor Snape or Professor McGonagall catching them.
“Maybe we won’t get caught?” Ron suggested, amazingly being hopeful. The other two nodded in agreement.
“Ron’s right, Harry. We didn’t get caught last time and we need this book.” Hermione glanced over at Harry.
“Ok, lets go.” The trio had halted to hide in a corner and now they slipped back out into the hallway. They had barely taken more than a few steps when Harry froze.
“Professor McGonagall!” Was all he had to say. Within seconds all three children had returned to their fairly safe haven in the cut corner. Since only a shadow hid them from view, they all hoped she would not have a light.
Hermione peeked out from behind the wall and watched her head of house approach. Professor McGonagall’s stride was fairly hurried as though her destination needed to be reached quickly, yet something kept her back.
“What’s wrong with her?” Ron whispered, peering out behind Hermione.
“What do you mean?” Harry asked joining the other two. Ron pointed at the Deputy Headmistress.
“Her hair.” Then they all stared.
Never had they ever seen Professor McGonagall with her hair out of the infamous bun. It was quite long reaching down to about mid thigh; slightly curled from being crushed in a bun all day long. Black as the night that the moonlight revealed, her hair seemed to cloak her back.
Next thing the trio noticed was her glasses; or rather the lack thereof. The large horn rimmed glasses did not mask the usual piercing green eyes. It was amazing how different the professor looked without her glasses and bun. If it hadn’t been for her usual tartan robes, Harry would not have recognized her.
“She’s hot?” Ron said, half questioning the logic of the statement, half wanting someone to tell him that he was asleep on his desk.
“I guess so.” Harry muttered.
“Wonder where she’s going?” Hermione wondered, always the curious one.
“We could follow her.” Harry suggested. Ron’s mouth dropped open.
“Have you lost your mind? She’s Professor McGonagall!” He whispered loudly as though neither Harry nor Hermione had noticed that.
“So?” Hermione rolled her eyes. “She looked worried.”
“I’d look worried to if I had suddenly changed into another person. But she’s still going to take away points and give us a detention if she catches us no matter what she looks like!”
“She won’t catch us, now come on.” Harry glanced out once more to make sure she had passed by and led the trio out into the hallway.
Staying well behind the Transfigurations Mistress but within sight, the trio inched their way along the hallway. They were completely silent. Professor McGonagall soon made her way past most of the classrooms and turned to head toward the dungeons.
The trio halted as she went down the steps.
“Where is she going?” Ron asked. Harry shrugged. Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out the marauder map.
“Forgot about this.” He muttered. The trio watched as Harry located McGonagall on the map. She was making her way deeper into the dungeon.
“Is there anyone else down there?” Hermione asked, trying to make sense of where the professor was going.
“Yeah.” Harry answered. They held their breath as the name appeared next to the dot.
“Why is McGonagall going to see Snape?”
The trio watched in amazement as the two dots neared each other until they were quite close together; though not touching.
“Are they talking?” Hermione asked, glancing down the hallway in case Filch had appeared.
“I have no idea.” Harry muttered, curiosity gnawing at him.
Suddenly as though they had all had the same idea, the trio made their way into the dungeons.
Following the map they soon reached at point close enough to the two professors to hear them but not see them or be seen. Hunkering down behind a suit of armor, they listened. It was completely silent except for the occasional drip of some leaky faucet.
Since silence was imperative, the trio said nothing as they stared at the map. The two dots were touching, though they were not sure whether or not the professors were. Harry looked over at the trio’s own dots to see them all touching. Cramped together like sardines in a can, it was easily seen that they were touching.
Suddenly Professor Snape began to talk. The trio strained their ears but could barely hear him as he was whispering. Inching forward, the trio froze. Much closer than they had thought, they suddenly saw both professors.
Professor Snape was holding a shaking Professor McGonagall in his arms. He had half sat half knelt and in all translations of the word, held McGonagall close to him. Rocking her gently he was muttering things to her in what sounded like Gaelic.
Finally regaining their senses, the trio tiptoed behind a darkened device of torture. The sight before them was not at all what they had expected.
“Minerva?” Professor Snape asked, his voice gentle and soft. The trio was almost certain that he had stolen someone else’s voice. She didn’t answer but tightened her grip on his robe front. “I’ll take you back to your room now. It’ll be okay.” Lifting her up into his arms, Snape began to carry the frightened professor down the hallway. As soon as they were out of sight, Ron exploded.
“Snape and McGonagall!” Harry and Hermione both simultaneously covered his mouth.
“That was so cute.” Hermione said smiling. “He was comforting her.”
“Hermione, McGonagall doesn’t get afraid. She hates Snape. He’s a Slytherin!”
“Just because he’s Slytherin doesn’t mean she hates him. She’s human too.” Hermione glared at Ron.
“Both of you stop it. Don’t you want to follow?” Harry mediated pointing out into the hallway. Ron nodded as Hermione folded her arms.
“Fine but, only if Ron stops it.”
The trio followed the dot that depicted Professor Snape down the hallway of the dungeon and out into the main hallway. It was obvious that his goal was to quickly get to Professor McGonagall’s quarters as he was just about running. Suddenly just as he had reached the portrait that guarded the door to the professor’s door, she began to struggle.
Harry froze as he watched Professor McGonagall silently struggle to get away from Professor Snape.
“He’s hurting her.” Harry whispered anger flaring up through his body. If Hermione hadn’t grabbed his arm he would have lunged at Snape.
“She’s asleep, Harry. She’s having a nightmare.” Hermione reasoned pulling Ron and Harry back behind a suit of armor. The three students sat motionless watching their professors.
Professor McGonagall had gone ballistic. From hitting to clawing, she tried everything to get out of Professor Snape’s strong grip. Then she screamed. The scream was so loud and so full of terror that even the trio forgot they were suppose to be hiding.
Rushing out from behind the armor, they helped Snape get the thrashing screaming woman into her bedroom. Quickly, while Ron and Harry closed the door, Hermione opened the bedroom door and Snape carried Professor McGonagall into the bedroom. Then he cast a silencing charm over the room.
“Minerva! Wake up.” Snape said urgently, trying to wake Professor McGonagall up. She didn’t respond as she continued kicking and screaming. Words soon became mixed with her screams and the trio was soon horrified to listen to her pleas.
“The students!” Professor McGonagall whimpered finally her eyes opening. Tears began to drip down her pale cheeks as Professor Snape pulled her into his embrace. “He killed them.” Professor McGonagall whispered both the trio and Professor Snape knew whom she was referring to.
“Shush, Minerva. It was only another nightmare.” A long moment passed as the trio held their breath and Snape waited for McGonagall to fall asleep once more. When she did, he silently laid her down and turned to Harry, Ron and Hermione.
Ushering them to follow him, Professor Snape led them out of the bedroom.
“Go back to your rooms now and be quiet about this.” Snape said though the seriousness of his statement failed to register in his tired voice. The trio nodded as one and made their way to the door. Hermione stopped though and turned around.
“Does this happen often, sir?” she asked innocently. Snape nodded and opened the door for them to exit. Several staff members were congregated outside of the door as well as the prefects. With a simple announcement that everything was under control, Professor Snape sent them all back to bed, before he silently slipped off toward the Headmaster’s office.
“Where’s he going?” Hermione wondered out loud pointing as Professor Snape rounded the corner. Harry pulled out the map.
“Dumbledore’s office, why?” She shrugged.
“I just figured he would be going back to bed. Don’t you feel terribly sorry for Professor McGonagall?” both boys nodded.
“I take back what I said about her not being human.” Ron muttered greatly saddened by the thought that Professor McGonagall was not the cruel person he had always viewed her as.
“She has nightmares about things happening to us.”” Harry said greatly amazed. “I guess I never thought about her caring for us.” Ron shrugged.
“I never thought she could care about anything.” He received a glare from Hermione. “I said ‘never thought’, not I ‘don’t think’.” He defended himself.
“Why do you think she went to Snape?” Hermione asked suddenly. Harry shrugged.
“I don’t know. Maybe he helped her once and she’s made a habit of it.”
“You’d think she’d go to Dumbledore, since their best friends.” Hermione stopped. “Harry, where’s the headmaster?”
“Is this going to become a habit with you?” Harry teased pulling the map once more out of his pocket.
“He’s in his office. Why?” Hermione grabbed his arm and began to pull him off down the hallway.
“Snape went to see him…that means that he’ll be bringing him back to Professor McGonagall’s room. Come on.” Dumbly following, Harry and Ron soon found themselves hidden behind a large vase by Professor McGonagall’s chamber door. Harry was just about to comment when light filled the hallway.
Professor Dumbledore and Professor Snape suddenly emerged from around the corner and silently made their way to the door. Without comment the door opened and the two men disappeared into the room.
Without thinking the trio slipped into the room right before the door closed. All three of them to intent of listening, they failed to realize that they had just placed themselves in a very dangerous situation.
Slipping behind the couch, the trio watched Dumbledore enter Professor McGonagall’s bedroom and emerge from it carrying her. To their sudden horror, he placed her on the couch they were hiding behind and sat by her feet. Professor Snape knelt down in front of the couch and leaned back slightly on his legs.
“Minerva, are you alright?” Dumbledore asked, softly. The trio could see what he was doing but it was obvious that he cared deeply for her from his tone of voice.
“I’m fine, Albus. Severus helped, but it was only a dream.” Professor McGonagall’s voice wavered slightly and they had to strain to hear her last statement.
“I am so sorry that I wasn’t there for you, my dear.” The trio exchanged glances.
“Albus, it’s fine. You had to go to a meeting. I’m glad you went.” There was a rustling of cloth and Ron glanced under the couch to see Snape rise from the floor.
“Accio blanket.” He muttered softly. A large white blanket that was draped over a chair flew to him and he wrapped in around the Transfigurations professor.
“Thank you, love.” She whispered. The trio exchanged silent glances once more. Moments passed and Harry’s legs were falling asleep before anyone said anything else.
“Voldemort’s return has been very hard on her.” The Headmaster said sadly. Obviously she had fallen asleep.
“Do you think he actually enters her mind?” Snape asked, concern poured from his words.
“No. But she dreams of the worst things that could possibly happen. I’ve seen some of them. I seem to be her more familiar nightmare. I have died every possible way. You are second place and many different students third. I worry about her health. She has not been sleeping very well.”
“We could talk to Poppy about it. Mother wouldn't want that though would she?” Snape asked, confusing the trio as to whose mother he was referring to.
“Well, your mother would not ever forgive us for telling anyone about her little problem but it may have to be done before she starts to become ill.”
“I have to return to my room.” Snape said, suddenly rising and walking to the door.
“Good night, Severus. Thank you for helping your mother.”
“It was my pleasure. Good night, Father.” Severus Snape slipped out of the room and the trio sat with their mouths hanging open.
“Harry, Ron, Hermione you can come out here. I know you are behind the couch.” Announced the seemed all knowing Dumbledore. Sheepishly, the trio emerged from the shadows of the couch. Hanging their heads in shame, they stood in front of the Headmaster.
“I know that you were concerned for your professor, but entering her sitting room and hiding behind the couch to listen to a conversation is a bit sneaky.” His eyes twinkled as he spoke.
“We’re sorry, Professor. It won’t happen again.” Harry apologized. Ron and Hermione nodded along with him.
“Are you really married to Professor McGonagall?” the ever-curious Hermione wondered forgetting that she was talking to Professor Dumbledore.
“Yes, I am. And as you doubtlessly heard, Professor Snape is our son.” He rose from the couch. “Now come with me. It is very late and we wouldn’t want Mr. Filch to catch you roaming the halls.”
The very next night found the same trio making their way down the hallway. Only this time their planned destination was not the library but the Quidditch patch. Ron and Harry had decided to do some extra practice and Hermione as usual had been unable to talk them out of it. Quite confident that no one would catch them, they exited the castle and entered the patch.
Suddenly just as they had stepped out onto the field, light glared into their eyes. In the dazzling bright light it was hard to see who was more shocked; Professor McGonagall or the trio. For a full minute they gaped at each other and then the professor pulled herself together once more.
“Mr. Potter, Mr. Weasley and Miss Granger what a surprise!” The trio glanced around to make sure Filch wasn’t standing behind her. “What brings you at midnight out into the Quidditch patch?” Sarcasm laced her words and the trio cringed for the berating they were certain they would receive. “It is not safe to remain out here. Return to your rooms now and stay there.” The light dimmed and she walked past them.
“I think Professor McGonagall’s tired.” Ron muttered. Harry and Hermione nodded in agreement.
