A/N: The quote's not mine, and I wrote this for tabbygirl's love quote challenge. Hope you like it!
-------------------------------
The dark clouds hovered angrily over Hogwarts as rain pelted down the windows like shots of whiskey going down an alcoholic’s throat. Though it was nearing the end of spring, entering summer, there was a chilling coldness in the air, one that did not sit well with Minerva McGonagall. She couldn’t help the shiver that went up her spine, as she took a tentative step closer to the headmaster’s figure.
His left arm was crossed; his right arm placed on it, gently touching his chin thoughtfully. His eyes were worn and tired; the usual twinkle was gone. Minerva licked her thin lips, opening her mouth several times, unable to say a word. She had never seen him like this before. He refused to face her, though she knew he knew she was there. He always knew.
She wanted to reach out and touch him, to ask him what was wrong with him this evening, but she didn’t. He would speak when he was ready, she reasoned. She found herself fidgeting with the hem of her sleeve; an old habit she hadn’t done since her school days.
Thunder crashed, quickly followed by a fork of lightening in the distance, and she couldn’t help but jump. She had been too lost in her thoughts. Albus, however, stayed perfectly still, as thunder again crashed. Minerva couldn’t miss the lightening flash that reflected in his eyes.
“Death cannot stop true love; it can only delay it for a little while.”
His voice never faltered, but Minerva’s heart broke into a million pieces at his words. She could feel the physical pain stab into her heart as she watched him turn to face her. Tears had formed in his blue eyes, and one slowly rolled down his cheek. Minerva shook her head no, as she backed away from him, narrowly missing the end table of the couch.
He couldn’t leave her. He just couldn’t. What happened to forever? What happened to them dying together at an old age? He couldn’t die now.
