Author's Note: There isn't any Minerva until the last part, so be prepared I do so love writing Ariana.
--
Ariana smiled contentedly to herself. Abe had just returned from Hogwarts, and she overjoyed to see him- not that she didn't love Al, of course, but he wasn't all that much fun. Al never played jacks with her, or read to her if he could help it. With Abe back, she might have some fun for once.
"School, Abe?" she asked, prodding him to regale her with stories from Hogwarts. "School?" Abe smiled at her.
"Before I forget, Ari," he said, rummaging in his school bag. Ariana looked on curiously; what she wouldn't give to be able to join Abe at Hogwarts! It sounded incredibly exciting, much more so than staying here and helping Al with the chores.
"Here you are," Abe announced proudly, pulling from his school bag a small sack. He handed it to his sister, who stared at him bewilderedly. "Go on, open it," he cajoled her. Ariana needed no further encouragement to unfold to end of the sack and peer inside.
"Abe!" she shrieked in delight, vaulting over the sofa and hugging him tightly. Abe laughed.
"I thought you might like it." Like it she did. Abe had given her a bag full of sweets, which Al never bought from the store when it came time to get more food, and what she forever craved. She carefully picked up one that was wrapped in colourful red foil. It looked so good, and smelled good too! Ariana grinned at her brother, who signaled that she could eat one if she wished. Just as she was about to open the wrapper, there came a voice from the doorway-
"What are you two doing?"
Aberforth and Ariana both jumped. Albus walked over to both of them and picked the sweet bag up from Ariana's lap. She made to take it back, but Al held it just out of her reach.
"Aberforth!" he cried irritably upon looking inside. "Why in the world are you giving her sweets?" Abe, far from looking guilty, scowled at his older brother.
"She needs something special once in awhile," he shot back, crossing his arms over his chest. Ariana frowned and grabbed at her sweet bag again.
"Mine, Al!" she informed him sullenly. "Mine!"
"I know it's yours," he told her, "but honestly, Aberforth, it's hours until dinner, still. Couldn't you have waited until afterwards, when she could have eaten them for dessert?"
"Who cares?" Abe grumbled, while Ari made another move for the bag.
"Al!" she moaned, rubbing her forehead against his arm. "Al! Please?" Albus sighed and patted her head gently.
"I know you want the sweets, Ari, but you're thirteen years old. You need a structured diet, you can't go around eating sweets any time you-"
"Spare us the lecture, would you?" Abe interrupted rudely, glaring at Al, who looked affronted.
"Fine, then," he said stoically, waving his wand so that the sweets disappeared. Ariana shrieked.
"Al! No, no! Mine!"
"I've put them in the kitchen, Ari," Albus placated her, but just barely. She slipped down the sofa, pouting.
"No fair. No fair."
--
Minerva stared at Albus, who was currently unwrapping yet another sherbet lemon. As she always did, she leaned over and pressed a kiss to his cheek. However, today she was unable to stifle her instincts, which were-
"Albus, it can't be healthy, all those sweets." She raised an eyebrow at him, and Albus shook his head and smiled.
"My dear, I am well past the age of needing three square meals a day," he told her jovially. Minerva frowned.
"Everyone does, actually. Albus, why do you eat so many sweets?" she asked him. He smiled, a bit sadly.
"The eternal question." Albus sighed heavily. "I didn't eat many sweets during my childhood, I suppose. I was too busy trying to keep others from doing so." Minerva's brows crinkled, but she didn't comment on this, which he was grateful for.
There are more to the little habits than we know, Albus mused, unwrapping another sweet.
