"Poppy, will you do this?" "What do you mean, Rolanda, it's ridiculous? Flirt with the Headmaster? When I'm married to Alastor Moody? Are you SERIOUS, Rolanda Perigrin Hooch?" "Yep! And it isn't FLIRTING, it's bringing Min to her senses, that's what it is!" Poppy looked at Sylvia for support. "Sylvia, this is a ridiculous idea, isn't it? Tell Ro not to make me do this!" The mild Head of Hufflepuff shrugged. "Sorry, Poppy, but you know how Ro is...I'm just glad it isn't me she picked!" Poppy Pomfrey sighed. She was going to regret this...
Poppy flopped down on a bed in the Hospital Wing. All day she'd been following Albus around like a lovesick puppy, begging him for attention and noticing Minerva growing angrier. She regretted letting herself be talked into this, no, FORCED into this. The McGonagall temper was not to be trifled with...
She'd sent an owl to Alastor, explaining, but he wasn't too keen on Ro's "project." In the end, he'd agreed, reluctantly. He cautioned Poppy to have "constant vigilance" that Severus didn't slip Albus a Love Potion so that he'd love her back.
Poppy groaned. It was just like Al to say that. Al...cher coeur...beloved of my heart...she thought with a pang of longing. She'd managed to seat herself on the other side of Albus from Minerva that night at dinner, trading places with Severus. He had arched his eyebrow sardonically when she explained why, and thrown Rolanda a glare so fierce, you'd have thought she was Neville Longbottom, not Rolanda Hooch, his only love. That glare was only one step down from his infamous "Potter glare", reserved for Harry, and, on occasion, Remus Lupin.
Under Ro's watchful eye, she'd slipped her right hand over Albus' left, cringing inside as she did so. It was torture to do this, when she loved Al so much. Ro gave her an encouraging look, and she decided to act the part a little better. "Albus," she whispered seductively, "meet me in my office tonight." The whisper was just loud enough for both Minerva and Albus, but no one else, to hear. Minerva looked livid, and Albus simply nodded slowly.
Poppy panicked as she got back to her office in the hospital wing. Rolanda met her there. "Ro, what am I going to do? I told Albus to meet me here, but this is no place to..." Rolanda fairly grinned. She had been second-best in their year at Transfiguration. (No prizes for guessing who was first.) With a few waves of her wand, the office was transformed into a romantic, candlelit room, perfect for Ro's plans.
Albus Dumbledore made his way to the hospital wing. Madam Pomfrey had been acting strangely lately...she had followed him all day and now was inviting him to her office? What was this?
She met him at the door. "Hello, Albus." she said, playfully winding her fingers in and out of his beard, which disconcerted him for a minute. "Madam Pomfrey, this is inappropriate behavior...what would Alastor say?" He saw a flash of fear in her eyes, but before he could ponder it any longer, the door was slammed open...revealing Minerva Renee McGonagall, wand drawn and dark green eyes blazing. "POPPY POMFREY, WHAT IN MERLIN'S NAME IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!!!!!!!!" she thundered. Poppy could swear that the whole hospital wing shook.
Albus tried to smooth things over. "I'm afraid I am in the dark just as much as you, Professor. Something seems to have come over her. Besides, I don't have any intention of returning her...affections, because...because I..." He faltered. "Yes, Headmaster?" "Because I love another," he murmured, eyes lowered. Minerva's heart broke. Who could the woman of his heart be?
Poppy choked back a laugh. These two were SO obvious, except to each other! It was ridiculous...
"Why is it so hurtful to you, Professor, if Poppy loves me?" Albus asked. Minerva looked directly at Albus. "I have loved the same man for fifty-three years, Albus, and he does not love me back. That is why." Albus' heart clenched in his chest. She was in love already?
Rolanda stepped out of the shadows. "Excuse me for saying so, Headmaster, but you're being so BLOODY STUPID!" Albus looked directly at her. "Why?" he asked calmly. Rolanda giggled. She had to spell it out for him? All right, she would. "Because. Minerva. Loves. You. And. She. Has. For. Years." Then Poppy looked at Minerva, and spelled it out for her, too. "Albus. Is. In. Love. With. You. And. I. Do. Not. Love. Him. Rolanda. Set. This. Up. Kill. Her. Not. Me."
Rolanda glared at Poppy, and dove under a hospital bed as Minerva sent a Tickling Charm her way. It hit its mark, and Rolanda couldn't breathe, she was laughing so hard.
Once she was satisfied that Rolanda was punished enough, Minerva lifted the charm and Albus drew her into a warm embrace. "We have waited much too long, Tabby," he said, and led Minerva back into Poppy's office, which was still...redecorated. As they began to make use of the room, Poppy shut the door. Rolanda muttered, "It's about time those two stopped dancing around one another."
Poppy gazed at her friend. "That sounds familiar." "Well, yes, it would. One of my ancestors was related to Helga Hufflepuff, and she left behind a diary, not like Tom Riddle's diary, a normal one. I showed it to you in fifth year, remember? Salazar Slytherin said that when Godric and Rowena got together, finally."
Poppy nodded. The two waited for hours outside her office door, eventually joined by Sylvia Sprout. They took beds in the Hospital Wing, and in the morning Min and Albus came out. "About time," observed Sylvia. "Had fun?" snickered Ro. "Rolanda, you can change my office back now. Or else." said Poppy.
This fic is now complete.
