16 year old Minerva McGonagall was running down the halls of Hogwarts. She was never late. NEVER. But… she had forgotten a book in the Gryffindor tower and had had to pick it up. Oh Merlin. I can’t believe I’m late on the first day back! I hope this Professor Dumbledore, whomever he is, isn’t too angry with me for being late she thought, standing outside the door of the Transfiguration classroom. She was five minutes late. Catching her breath she opened the door. “OUCH!” the door hit something, or, rather, someONE. Minerva heard the person fall to the floor, and someone squeal, “Professor!” Oh no!!! Did I just hit Dumbledore with the door?? Can this day get any worse? She peeked inside. Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore was lying on the floor, holding his nose. She stepped up to him and offered him her hand to help him up. “Are you okay, Professor?” she nervously asked. He gave a muffled sound which she couldn’t dertermine if was positive or negative. When he didn’t take her hand she knelt beside him. “P-professor?” She could see him nod. Thank Merlin! He’s alright! She was relieved, but when he removed his hands they were red of his blood, and so was most of his lower face. “I dhenk aii need to go…” he pointed towards the door. She nodded. “I’m so sorry, Professor, really!”
~~oo0oo~~
Later that evening, Dumbledore had not shown up for dinner. Minerva couldn’t help but be nervous. What if something really bad happened? No, dr. Johnson can fix everything. And besides – it was probably just a broken nose. I don’t like that probably…Oh MERLIN! I broke a teacher’s nose!!! After dinner she made her way to the library, but instead she found herself outside Professor Dumbledore’s office. She knocked. “Enter.” Came his clear reply. She entered and he didn’t look up until she was standing in front of his desk. “Ah, miss. McGonagall. How are you this evening?” His concern for her touched her, since it was HER who should be asking HIM that question. “I’m fine, thank you, sir, but how are you?” she asked nervously. He smiled at her. “I am fine also. It seems I suffered a broken nose, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed.” She smiled apologetic at him. She opened her mouth to say something but he interrupted her. “actually I don’t believe we have been presented properly. I, obviously, know your name and you know mine, but for the sake of appearance: hello, miss. I’m Professore Albus Dumbledore, your new Transfigurations teacher.” He smiled again and extended his hand. She took it, also with a smile. “Nice to meet you professor, I’m Minerva McGonagall, sixth year Gryffindor.”
And while this is the end of the story, it was the beginning of a great friendship.
