Title: I quit
Summary: A headmaster is quitting
Rating: Uhmm…6+?
A/N: I already posted this in my lj some time ago, when the theme was up to date
Dedication: Thus for Steffi, who needed beeing cheered up then and for twinny, who needs beeing cheered up now.
“I quit.”
Silence was following this astonishing statement.
A statement from the current Headmaster of Hogwarts, supposedly the mightiest wizard ever.
No-one in the Headmasters office was able to say a word.
Filius Flitwick and Rubeus Hagrid had a shocked expression on their faces.
Severus Snape surely didn’t believe a word of it.
He must have thought news of this kind would reach him before it reached the rest of the staff.
I, myself, was overwhelmed by those incredible words.
Albus Dumbledore? Quitting? Never!
I must have misunderstood him.
But the faces of everyone else told me, that I wasn’t the only one hearing those words.
But no face held a more shocked, unbelieving, overwhelmed, incredulous and simply unrecognisable expression than the one of Minerva McGonagall
The moment those words reached my mind, I was staring intensely at my best friend.
And the Headmaster hadn’t told her of his decision before.
That was for sure.
I could see it in the way her whole body went tense.
I could see it in the way her emerald eyes stopped to sparkle.
He began to explain.
How much he loved school.
How much he loved the students.
How much he had loved teaching.
And how much he despised the useless self he had become.
Here Filius began to argue.
And how much he despised the old-man-way the students were looking at him.
Here Hagrid began to argue.
And how much he despised the way he was treating the students nowadays.
Here Severus began to argue.
And how much he despised that he wasn’t able to recognize real danger for the students anymore.
Here I began to argue.
And how much he despised the thought that we might see him as a crackpot old fool someday.
Here Minerva wasn’t saying a word at all.
For the time of his whole speech, she had been losing more and more colour.
She seemed to have taken more time to see that he really did mean his words.
But then, the whole impact of his words must have hit her.
He was leaving.
And she was turning paler with every word he said.
By the time he had finished, she looked like a ghost.
Everyone had already tried to make Albus change his mind.
To make him rethink his decision.
She didn’t speak at all.
She looked like she wasn’t able to.
Frequently a staff member was shooting her a look
To ask for help.
To make her speak up.
To see how she was reacting.
Or just to see, if she was still sitting there.
Or if she already had fainted.
Albus didn’t look in her direction at all.
The first time he did, was when she shut the door behind her.
