How came she by her appointment?

Her appointment as Professor of Transfiguration, that is. You see, for a while now I've been intrigued by a comment in OotP:

'How long have you been teaching at Hogwarts?' Professor Umbridge asked.
'Thirty-nine years this December,' said Professor McGonagall.. (Brit ed. Hardback, p287)

December? I smell a story here! What happened? Why did her appointment come so late into the term? What happened to the previous professor? Was there an interim one? Did Dippit suddenly drop dead?

On a lighter note, Harry has a dream in OotP about Minerva playing the bagpipes. I wonder if she can actually has some? And can play them? I have some myself but I've never got around to learning them. I can make a wailing noise. Yes; my neighbours just love me. Good thing I live in the middle of nowhere ;D

You've got to tell me where the dream about McGonagall playing the bagpipes is. I've read that book I don't know how many times and I don't remember that

Umm, the lexicon? I'm still scared of that site, it's timeline is too RL for me; in my head Harry's nowhere around yet and Albus isn't *coughgaycough* and Min has only just started teaching at the school...

You know, I have always wondered about that too! Why did she start in December? And I've actually contemplated writing a fic about it at one point, but couldn't come up with anything creative! But I would totally love to see other people's takes on this too! Thanks for posting the idea!
