Basically I've had this thought. Minerva could have been in any of the houses. She is just, loyal and hardworking; intelligent, has a sharp wit, and is obviously a capable learner; and although she wouldn't "use any means", she certainly has ambition(she is after all an animagus) and cunning (how else would she 'head off' Umbridge without getting herself sacked?)
Anyway, the bunny is that Albus has had this thought also, and asks Minerva how she became a Gryffindor (for which she is also suited, no doubt about it). The only requirement would be that the hat MUST have considered putting her in any of the houses, even if, just like with Harry's sorting, it is only indirectly by listing her traits which suit each house.

good ideea, I might do it. But...not now. Anyway, I read in a fic about minerva's childhood, something i loved. Sorting hat: 'Dificult, verry dificult...Brains...but also curage...hm...here it is...Mrs. McGonagall, what would you prefer, reading a book about an advencer, or having an advencer of your own?' minerva:'Having my own advencer and perhaps writing a book about it later in my life.' Sorting Hat: GRIFINDOR!
