“Albus,” Minerva McGonagall called out as she pushed open his office door. The Headmaster had been gone all weekend visiting a muggle friend of his in London, and Minerva was checking to see if he had gotten back ok. Of course she was, also, hoping to be invited to stay for a game of chess or just a mug of hot chocolate, but when she opened the door he wasn’t in his office. Upon closer inspection she realized the fire had not even been lit, and it looked as if he had not been in his office at all, and she wondered if he was even back.
Going up the stairs Minerva knocked on his sitting room door, and had to strain to hear his weak “Come in.”
“Albus,” Minerva started but she stopped when she saw him lying on the couch with a box of tissues beside of him, and several blankets covering him.
“Are you alright,” she asked quickly crossing to his side and placing a hand on his forehead before he could respond.
“Albus you have a fever,” Minerva stated looking worriedly down at her best friend.
“I do admit I feel awful, Minerva, but no need to call Poppy yet,” he replied before starting to cough.
“Is there anything I can do to help you,” Minerva asked bringing one of the chairs closer to the couch and sitting down.
“Just sit and talk with me, please,” Minerva’s heart broke at how pitiful he sounded, so she began talking about what she had done over the weekend and the antics of the students. Before she had gotten half way through Saturday, she noticed that he had fallen asleep. Leaning over she brought the blankets up under his chin, and placed a gentle kiss on his forehead. Minerva stayed with Albus that night, worried about what he had, and when she awoke the next morning she felt awful.
“Minerva you don’t look so good, do you feel alright,” Albus asked weakly from the bed.
“I think I’ve caught what you have, Albus.” Looking for closely at him she asked, “Albus what are all those spots on your face?”
Albus sat up to get a mirror, and confessed he had no idea, “but they itch, my dear.”
“That’s it, Albus; I’m going to get Poppy. You had better stay here.” Resigning himself to the inevitable Albus just sat back down. Minerva used the fireplace to call the school nurse, “Poppy!”
“Minerva, what’s wrong?”
“Albus was in London over the weekend, and I think he caught something. He has a fever, and is very tired, and this morning he had little red spots all over his face. I found him yesterday evening, and I feel asleep beside of his couch. I think I have caught what he has.”
Raising her eyebrow Poppy asked, “You feel asleep beside of his couch, are you sure you didn’t fall asleep on the couch?” Minerva’s face turned bright red, and she let her temper get the better of her, “Poppy Pomfrey how dare you suggest such a thing, Albus and I are friends, just friends. Now are you going to do your job, or just sit there?”
Poppy loved it when she could get under Minerva’s skin. “Alright, I’m coming.”
Poppy was all business when she examined Albus, and she was not happy with what she found. She didn’t say anything until she had finished examining Minerva, “Albus you caught the chickenpox, and Minerva you caught it from Albus.”
“Poppy, is that a children’s disease,” Albus asked vaguely knowledgeable of the illness.
“Typically yes, but adults can catch it as well if you have not been exposed to it before. Now those bumps are going to get worse, and you are not to scratch them! Do you understand me?” Nodding that they did she continued, “Now I’m going to have to quarantine you, and don’t even start in on me Minerva McGonagall! The chickenpox is very contagious, and I have no idea how many of the students have had it before so you will be spending a week or two in the Room of the Requirement, together.”
Minerva protested immediately, not that she minded spending two weeks in one room with Albus but she had a reputation to maintain, “Poppy, why can’t we stay in our own rooms?”
“It will be easier for me, for one, and two you can keep each other company.” Turning to leave she added, “And Minerva I would change into more comfortable robes, that are less inhibiting.” Smiling at Minerva and Albus’ blushing cheeks the medi-witch left the room.
An hour later they were both sitting up in bed as Poppy gave her last instructions, “Now remember no scratching! I’ll check up on you in five days. Have fun!”
“Have fun, yea right, sometimes I wish I could ring her neck,” Minerva mumbled to herself as she fluffed the pillows behind her head.
“Now, now my dear I did not realize my company was that poor,” Albus replied trying to get her to lighten up.
“I’m sorry, Albus. You know I think very highly of your company, but what are we going to do in here for a week?”
“Well, how bout a game of chess?” Thinking that wasn’t a bad idea Minerva consented.
