Spoken For
Emmeline Vance arrived at an Order meeting midway through July looking very excited. “My sister wants to join the Order,” she announced.
After some discussion, it was decided that Celestina would be brought by Emmeline to the next meeting and would be questioned under veritaserum by Albus and Alastor. If they approved of her answers she could join them and if not, she would be taken home and her memory of the evening would be obliviated.
The Vance sisters arrived early at Grimmauld Place for the meeting the next Monday and waited with apparent anticipation for the questioning to begin. Celestina was a pretty middle aged witch with long blonde hair and vibrant blue eyes who had been widowed during the first war with Voldemort. She said she wanted to fight against him no matter what the cost. She answered the questions concerning her intentions and beliefs to even Alastor’s satisfaction and became the newest member of the Order of the Phoenix.
After the meeting, Celestina accompanied her sister home for a late night cup of tea.
“So what’s the deal with Dumbledore?” she asked eagerly.
“What do you mean?” Emmeline asked.
“You know, is he involved with anyone or not?” Celestina was practically sitting on the edge of her seat she was so interested.
“Oh,” her sister said thoughtfully. “Hmm... I really don’t know. If he is, no one talks about it.”
Emmeline, along with most people she knew had not-so-secretly suspected for a long time that the relationship between Albus Dumbledore and his deputy was much more than met the eye. However, they had never found any real proof of this.
“Well a man like that should not be single,” Celestina said decisively. “I’ll have to do a little probing.”
“Cel, I didn’t invite you into the Order so you could seduce our leader,” Emmeline said warningly.
“I know, Em, but it would be a nice bonus wouldn’t it?” She grinned, “A man like that, you just know must be an excellent lover. You can see it in his eyes, but those hands...oh, I’d like to feel his hands on me.”
“You have been a widow for too long, Cel,” Emmeline said with a shake of her head. “Now I need some sleep, goodnight.”
At each of the next several bi-weekly Order meetings, Celestina made it a point to always sit close to Albus. As close as humanly possible, actually. She asked him many questions, hanging on every word of his answers, and always laughed just a little to hard at his jokes. If Albus stayed for a meal, Celestina would stay for a meal – always paying careful attention to the items he ate.
One night, when he was on his third helping of shepherd’s pie, Celestina said, “You know, Albus, shepherd’s pie is a specialty of mine. You’ll have to come over some time and let me cook you one.”
“Uhm...well thank you for the offer, but I’m afraid I won’t have time for visiting this summer. There is much to be done in the next month.
Many of the other Order members were growing extremely tired of Celestina’s behavior toward their leader. They found it inappropriate and unbecoming. Especially as Albus had done nothing to encourage her attentions. Always the gentleman, his refusal of her dinner invitation had been the first outward sign he had given of disinterest, but his polite behavior toward Celestina had cooled a bit over the past week or so. It was as though he had just realized what her intentions were.
In fact, it had taken Albus a couple of weeks to decide that the newest Order member was flirting with him. He had noticed an immediate change in Minerva’s behavior during Celestina’s first meeting. Her posture had been very stiff, she spoke only when directly addressed, bristled every time Celestina addressed Albus, and left in a very bad mood before dinner. When he arrived home that night, Albus was surprised by Minerva’s almost aggressive seduction of him. On the nights they came home from Order meetings and usually for a night or two after, Minerva would push herself beyond anything Albus could ever remember during their love making – almost hurting herself to ensure he was pleased.
The first couple of times this happened, Albus attributed it to the fact that it had been a very long time since he and Minerva had been together and that she had recently had a near death experience. They hadn’t made love since before his exile from Hogwarts at the hands of Fudge and Umbridge and when Minerva returned home from St. Mungo’s Poppy had made a point of mentioning that “no strenuous activity” for the next month included any physical expressions of love with her husband, much to Minerva’s dismay.
However, after three weeks, Albus realized this could not be the reason for her renewed vigor and, though he hated to admit it, if they kept up this pace his young wife was going to wear him out. He finally had to ask her what had been going on.
Gathering Minerva tightly in his arms and kissing her lovingly, Albus asked, “My dear, not that I mind the affection, but what has gotten into you lately? I’m afraid you’re going to hurt yourself.”
Minerva looked up at him and tried to hedge around her true motivations, “Nothing has ‘gotten into me’ Albus. It has simply been a very long time since we’ve been together as husband and wife and I want to be sure you’re enjoying our time together.”
Albus could sense the incompleteness of her answer, “Minerva, I always enjoy time with you, whether or not we’re making love.” He kissed her tenderly again, “I love you, you don’t have to go to any special efforts for me.”
She sighed softly and tightened her arms around him.
“Minerva, look at me.” She did. “What is bothering you?”
Minerva extracted herself from his embrace and sat up, pulling the sheet up over her chest. “Why haven’t you made it more apparent that you are uninterested in your latest pursuer?”
Now Albus sat up, confusion blanketing his face, “My latest... Who?”
“Celestina Bronson,” Minerva answered icilly.
“She’s been flirting with me?”
“Honestly, Albus, how can you be so blind? The whole Order has been talking about it for two weeks!”
He pulled her back into his arms, “I am blinded, Minerva. Since I have you I don’t even notice other women anymore. But I will try to politely show her my disinterest, I promise.”
Minerva nodded skeptically and let Albus pull her back down among the pillows and pull the comforter over their intertwined bodies before drifting off to sleep.
For the next several meetings, Albus made a point of sitting with Minerva and engaging her in any conversation he took part in. They also left before meals, claiming important business back at the school. Whenever Celestina would flirt with him, Albus did his best to remain polite while still letting her know he was not interested in her.
