Hey Everyone! This is my first fic. I hope you enjoy it! ;D
Because of a Phoenix
Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, looked closely at the woman before him. Normally Minerva McGonagall was one of his favorite people to get a surprise visit from; today, however, was not one of them. His usually calm and in-control deputy was anything but calm and in-control at this moment. Actually to be quite honest she was furious.
“I thought that Miss McKay and Miss Grenne had come across a mountain troll by the sound of their screams!” she screamed at him while giving a most evil death glare. “But no, it was just the giant, red bird that appeared suddenly before them in a burst of flames!” At the words “giant, red bird” Minerva had shifted her glare to the phoenix that was currently sitting next to Albus, most likely for protection from the angry witch.
It seemed, from what Albus could gather from Minerva’s ranting, that Fawkes, his beloved phoenix, had recently decided to play rooster to some of Minerva’s female doves that she uses for her classes. Unfortunately Fawkes had decided to surprise his lady friends during one of Minerva’s classes just when two students were getting the doves out at Minerva’s request. Albus found the situation quite humorous, regrettably though the result of it didn’t sit to well with Minerva, who immediately stormed up to Albus’ office to give him a piece of her mind.
“I mean what were you thinking Albus?” Minerva continued to rant. “Allowing Fawkes to just go off gallivanting with my doves whenever he felt like it!” She was breathing quite heavily now.
“Well, what do you expect me to do about it?” came Albus’ respond. “I mean Fawkes is a very independent bird, and goes by his own rules. Besides even if I could of stopped him I don’t think that I would of. After all, Fawkes deserves to have some fun once in a while.” At this Fawkes nodded his head in approval. Minerva just looked at Albus shocked.
“You wouldn’t have stopped him!” she screamed.
“Of course not. Why should I?” Albus could feel his temper rising. He usually was a very patient person, but there was even so much that Albus Dumbledore could take, and Minerva was pushing it.
“Because he almost scared two students to death!”
“Maybe, but he didn’t harm them in any way. They may have been a bit startled, but no one got hurt.”
“What?! Those two were so “startled”, as you put it, I had to send them to Poppy!”
“Well is it my fault that Fawkes has a love life!” It was at this point that Fawkes decided it might be better if he left. Neither Albus nor Minerva noticed he was missing.
“No, but it is your fault that you let him just appear wherever and whenever he wants!”
“I told you Fawkes is very independent, and I can not control what he does the entire day!”
“Albus, you are the Headmaster of the finest witchcraft school in the world, and you can’t control your own bloody bird!”
“Well as Headmaster I have many important things to do during the day, and don’t have time to baby-sit my very capable pet!”
At this point Minerva looked like she was ready to slap Albus, but instead she yelled at him, not thinking, “well maybe you shouldn’t be Headmaster if controlling one damn bird is too much for you!”
“Fine by me!”
“Fine!”
“Fine!” And with that Albus stormed out of the office slamming the door behind him. Three seconds later the door opened with a bang revealing a still very angry Albus. He quickly stepped back into the room, and glaring at Minerva said in the iciest of tones, “this is my office.”
Minerva glared back at Albus for a moment before promptly rolling her eyes, and then exiting in the same fashion Albus had a minute ago. Albus stood staring at the door for a bit. Finally he collapsed into the chair behind his desk with a sigh. He took off his glasses, and began to rub the bridge of his nose.
From the wall of his office came the sound of an amused snort, and then someone muttering to himself, “bickering like an old married couple again.”
At this Albus’ head shot up. “What was that?” His eyes quickly scanned the portraits of former headmasters until they came upon the amused face of Phineas Nigellus. “What did you say?” he asked, eyes narrowed.
“I said that you were bickering like an old married couple again,” came his reply.
“An old married couple? May I remind you, Phineas, that Minerva is my deputy and best friend.”
“Of course, but she is still a woman.”
“Well, yes of course, but-”
“You want to know why women has the most power in a relationship?” He didn’t wait for an answer. “It is because they have the ability to kick us men out of our own beds.” Phineas laughed and smiled devilishly at Albus.
“What?!” Albus said shocked. “Minerva and I are not in any relationship, and we most certainly are not sleeping in the same bed!”
“Well you should be!” was Phineas’ stubborn response. “Lord knows you want to.”
Albus, still a bit shocked at Phineas’ outburst, decided that now would be a good time to find Minerva and try to make up. She had to have cooled off a smidge by now. “I think I better go talk to Minerva.” With that Albus made his way to the door, but just before he was about to leave Phineas’ voice came to his ears again.
“Oh Albus. You know whenever I have trouble with a woman I always find that the best way to get her to forgive you is with a kiss.” Albus just slammed the door.
On the way to her rooms, Albus thought of all the possible ways he could apologize to her. However when he got there he still hadn’t thought of anything. Oh well, he thought. It’s now or never. He took a deep breath, and knocked on her door.
A few seconds later Minerva answered it, but when she saw whom her visitor was her eyes turned cold and her mouth thinned. “What do you want?” she asked in a voice that could have frozen fire.
“Minerva, I…” he trailed off. It would seem that man who always knew exactly what to say in every situation finally ran out of words. All he could think about now was Phineas’ last comment and how soft and inviting Minerva’s lips looked. Then it hit him; he didn’t need words. And with that thought he leaned forward, and brushed his lips against hers in a gentle fist kiss. Minerva was very stiff at first, but then she started to relax and finally kissed Albus back passionately.
When they eventually broke apart Minerva’s eyes were shinning, and Albus’ eyes twinkled back. Smiling at each other they started to lean in for a second kiss, but just before their lips met Minerva whispered, “I forgive you.” Phineas had been right all along.
