Untitled response to Challenge # 20
Albus Dumbledore watched as a tiny beak pecked its way out of a light brown shell. He was observing one of nature’s miracles, the miracle of birth along with his great-great grand nieces and nephews. This was the last egg to hatch and already several ducklings were beginning to waddle around.
There was something about baby animals that were so precious to Albus. Whenever Fawkes had a burning day he was quick to take care of the needs of his pet until his phoenix was once again able to see to his own needs.
An idea sprang into his head and he bade everyone goodbye and apparated to Diagon Alley. He was sure to find a duckling there. The Pet Emporium had an adorable fluffy yellow one that was only two weeks old. He had been abandoned at birth and Albus knew Minerva would love to adopt him. He purchased it along with several items for its care and hurried home to Hogwarts.
Minerva had consented to having dinner in Hogsmeade last month and since then they had gone dancing and bowling. They had grown closer although they didn’t have a proper understanding yet. Each evening out ended with several kisses at her door and Albus was pleased she hadn’t seemed put off by his advances. She seemed very happy with the status quo.
A lovely pet such as this would bring a spot of joy to her life. He raced to her rooms and knocked impatiently.
Minerva climbed from the tub in response to the knocking and wrapped her dressing gown around her. Whoever disturbed her bath had better have a very good reason.
She looked through her peephole and smiled. She opened the door and ushered Albus inside quickly. She didn’t want him hanging around her door with her only clothed in her dressing gown.
“Good evening, Minerva.” He smiled before kissing her cheek.
“Evening Albus. Is something the matter?”
“Not at all. Something is very good.” He followed her into the sitting room.
He brought his hands from around his back and handed her a gaily-wrapped box.
“A gift for me?” she asked. She looked a little bewildered but smiled nonetheless.
“An early Valentine’s gift. I thought someone so lovely deserved an equally lovely gift.”
Minerva quickly loosened the ribbon and lifted the lid on the box. She looked inside and shrieked while dropping the box. The startled duckling quacked in alarm.
“Minerva!” exclaimed Albus. Albus chased after the duckling that was chasing Minerva around the room.
Albus carefully captured it. “You could have hurt him,” he chided.
“Get that bird out of here!” she shrieked pointing at the door. Albus placed the duckling back in the box and headed out the door.
Minerva sank onto the couch and tried to stop trembling. All the horrors of being chased by her Aunt Emily’s ducks and geese during her childhood came rushing back. They had made ever summer for the first eleven years of her life a living hell. It was only after she started Hogwarts that her parents allowed her to remain at home since they saw so little of her during the school year.
Albus opened the box as soon as he entered his office and cupped the poor duckling in his large hands. The poor dear had been frightened by the fall to the floor not to mention Minerva’s screeches. Fawkes flew over and pushed Albus aside. He tucked the duckling under his wing and comforted the small animal.
Well he’s in good hands, thought Albus. He was growing angry over Minerva’s reaction to the duck. It wasn’t as though he had brought her a snake. Determined to find out what brought on such an uncharacteristic display he returned to her rooms.
Her door was slightly ajar and he remembered his hands were full when he left and hadn’t shut the door. He entered and closed the door surprised to find Minerva shaking on the couch. Her distress was heart wrenching and he realized it was fear that caused her reaction, not disgust. He took a seat beside her and pulled her into his arms.
“Minerva,” he spoke softly. “Its alright. The duck is gone.” Minerva sniffled and Albus produced a handkerchief. “I didn’t know you were afraid of them. I am so sorry, my dear.” Minerva crossed her legs as he held her tighter. “I’ll return him in the morning. I only wanted to give you a gift I thought you would love.”
“I suffered much at the hands of ducks and geese as a child. It just brought back horrible memories.” She raised her tear-stained face to his. “I don’t want to appear ungrateful. I could handle almost any other animal.”
“You don’t have to worry about a duck on the grounds or in the castle ever again.” He leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips. Her hand rose to his chest and she began stroking his beard.
His heart began beating faster as she took the initiative and deepened the kiss. His hand caressed her cheek softly when they broke apart before falling to her knee.
Her dressing gown had parted giving him access to several inches of her thigh. He had to use his iron will not to move his hands up the entire length of her leg but even his self-control slipped as her belt loosened and the front of her dressing gown parted slightly showing more curves than he had seen in some time.
She lifted her hand to his cheek causing the gap in her dressing gown to widen and her right breast was in plain view.
“I do believe you intend to comfort me?”
His answer was a firm kiss as his hand pushed the robe from her shoulder.
By morning he had helped to remove all memories of ducks from her mind and she was hard pressed to remember the species even existed.
