Well I'm not entirely sure that I like this, or that it fits the song, but I'm posting it anyway. Thanks for a good challenge that managed to chip away at the writer's block!
A/N: I don’t own the song or the characters, they belong to James Blunt and J.K. Rowling respectively, and the last line I really think I borrowed from somewhere but I can’t remember where.
Albus Dumbledore sat on the large rock that lay a few feet off the shore of the lake by the castle, physically and emotionally an island. It was lucky for him that Minerva McGonagall knew how to swim. She didn’t need to this particular morning, as he was only a little ways from shore, and stepping lightly from rock to rock she reached him without ever getting her feet wet. Wordlessly, she sat beside him. He didn’t acknowledge her presence but Minerva knew he would when he was ready. Twenty years of loving him had taught her that.
Beautiful dawn lights up the shore
There is nothing else in the world
I’d rather wake up and see (with you)
Beautiful dawn I’m just chasing time again
Though I would die a lonely man in endless night
But now I’m high running wild among all the stars above
Sometimes it’s hard to believe you remember me
They sat in silence for many long minutes, and time seemed to stand still, suspended between night and day. At length, the sun began to rise, its golden light reflecting off the far end of the lake, and outshining the stars that still hung above their heads. Minerva glanced down, the surface of the water was as still and clear as a looking glass and she took a moment to study their reflection. They had changed so much and yet, they looked exactly the same.
Unbeknownst to Albus and Minerva, a much younger couple watched from the bushes. Shy seventh year Arthur Weasley and his girlfriend Molly had been out walking and been captivated by the scene before them.
Beautiful dawn melt with the stars again
Do you remember the day my journey began
Will you remember the end (of time)
At length, Albus tore his gaze from the rising sun, and focused on the two people staring back at him from the lake.
“Do you think we’ve changed?” he asked. Minerva knew he was referring to how they were at the beginning of their relationship.
“I certainly have a few more gray hairs. Your fault, naturally.” She replied lightly.
His reflection smiled. Only Minerva could cheer him when he got into one of these moods. In a serious tone she added, “Not so much. I think we’ve just matured.”
His serious mood returned as well.
Beautiful dawn you’re just blowing my mind again
Thought I was born to endless night until you shine
High, running wild among all the stars above
Sometimes its hard to believe you remember me
“What is it?” Minerva asked softly.
“Why are you still here? I can’t give you anything you deserve. Not a home, not a family, not even a real relationship.”
Minerva slipped her arms around his waist, her head coming to rest on his shoulder. His own arms encircled her naturally, as they had for so long.
“Look at us,” she said, pointing to the water. “We fit perfectly. Albus,” their eyes met in their reflection, “this is my home, right here in your arms. Our students, and your crazy brother are my family, and I don’t care if I can’t tell anyone else that I love you. As long as you never forget it, that will be enough for me.”
Albus said nothing, just tightened his grip, his cheek resting against her hair.
In the bushes, Molly gave a soft sigh and whispered dreamily, “Do you think we’ll ever fit so perfectly?”
Arthur, turning red to the tips of his ears answered, “I think we already do.”
Will you be my shoulder when I’m grey and older
Promise me tomorrow starts with you
Getting high, running wild among all the stars
Albus couldn’t shake his bleak mood completely, and after another few moments spent in silence, he asked in a voice rough with emotion, “How is it you never left me?”
Minerva sighed quietly, then tilted her head slightly to kiss him.
“Because my love,” she murmured, “I never wanted to.”
Sometimes it’s hard to believe you remember me
