Summary: When Minerva is sucked into a mirror, and her exact opposite takes her place, she has to watch from inside the mirror, the consequences of her opposites’ actions. Not realising an ulterior motive is in play.......and who exactly is doing this to her?
............
Mirror, Mirror on the wall.
Chapter one – Creation
An acrid black smoke poured over the rim of a cauldron, causing the young woman who stood over it to take a few steps back.
“I hope this is worth it,” came a cold voice.
“It will be, when it is finished it’ll be perfect,” the woman replied, edging closer to the cauldron as the smoke had stopped flooding her laboratory.
“Hmph. I do not doubt your ability, but this to me seems a waste of time! Charming it would be much easier,” the voice spoke again.
“The charm would wear off quickly. I want this to last, and with this potion, it will.”
Taking a vial, the woman carefully filled it with the contents of the cauldron. After a few spoonfuls, the silvery liquid dripped over the edge of the full vial. As a drop hit the floor, the woman’s eyes widened. A small burn marked the place where it had hit. Then she smiled as her gaze turned to the large mirror set down on far table. The mirror was at least two metres square, and covered with ornate scroll work around the frame. It was not overly decorated, but enough to set it apart from anything.
Standing in front of it, the woman poured the liquid over the mirror. It burnt the glass so nothing could be seen in its reflection. Then she spoke.
“Silentium, cruor, infractus, nex.”
With a blinding light, the mirror returned to its former glory, though there was a different kind of sheen to its glass.
“Has it worked?” the male voice said again.
“Yes, it has. Now to place it in her midst- this shouldn’t be too hard, eh?” The woman replied, a note of pride in her voice. “I’ll leave that to you, brother. You can have that joy- I made it; it is your turn to do some work.”
“Very well. As you have done a marvellous job, I will concede to your wish, dear sister,” The brother replied.
“Thank you. Now I will prepare it so it’ll work perfectly- at the moment, I feel it is a little unstable.”
“Very well.”
The young woman watched her brother retreat to his rooms as she sighed softly, and again, started work on the final preparations of the mirror. Taking out her wand and muttering a few well chosen spells, the mirror glowed a faint gold colour before falling inert again.
“Please say this works.” She murmured to herself, before following her brother’s example and leaving.
The mirror lay there, bathed in light from a near by window. An eerie silence fell over the laboratory, as if something unnatural resided there. A small mouse crept out of its hidy hole, and made its way towards the table where the mirror lay, and sniffed it cautiously. Suddenly, the mouse was no longer there.
--------------------------
“Albus, this is completely unnecessary. I do not need new quarters, my old ones were perfectly fine!” Minerva’s voice sounded through the rooms. Then she laughed, as Albus’ head poked through a nearby door, and he just had to be wearing the silliest hat.
“Isn’t it amazing what you find when you have a good clear out?” he said, pointing to the hat.
“I didn’t really need the pointing finger Albus; anyone can see it for a few miles around at least!” Minerva managed to splutter through her laughter.
“What, this?” Albus replied, taking off the hat.
“Yes, that. Look at it!” Minerva said. Her laughter had been replaced by a large smile. Trust Albus to have something as crazy as a lime coloured wizards hat. “Were you trying to become Cornelius?”
“No, I just bought it on impulse. Now you mention it, it is a bit like Cornelius’ hat isn’t it?” Albus said, as realization dawned on him.
“Well, this-“Minerva pointed at the hat, “is a wizard’s hat, and Cornelius has a Bowler hat, so not really, unless you count the colour, no,” she finished.
“Do you like the rooms Minerva?” Albus finally asked after a few moments of amiable silence.
“They are lovely, but I don’t see why I had to move.”
“Minerva, you have just become Deputy Headmistress!” Albus faked mock surprise. “When
I became Deputy, I had to move rooms. So it is only fair that I pass this tradition on to you,” he finished.
“Really? I thought you didn’t like me,” Minerva said, casting her gaze down, and then giving a large sniff.
Albus laughed. He loved these moments, when it was just the two of them and it allowed him to see the humorous side of Minerva, the side that she kept hidden from the students. It would ‘create anarchy’ as she said, if they saw her in this light. Carefully, Albus put his hand under Minerva’s chin and raised her head, leant forwards and whispered in her ear.
“How could I not love my goddess?” before placing a light kiss on her lips.
“I don’t know how you could,” Minerva replied, entwining her arms around his neck, and smiling even more broadly than she had before. “I mean, aren’t gods supposed to be perfect?”
“Indeed they are, and I can think of no one more perfect than you,” Albus said, kissing his wife’s lips again, then, without warning, deepened the kiss.
“Are furnishing my rooms ever going to get done?” Minerva said cheekily, when the kiss ended. “I mean these breaks, although impromptu, are certainly welcome, but these rooms need to be done.”
“As you wish, my dear Minerva,” Albus said waving his wand. Everything took its place immediately.
“You should have done that earlier!” Minerva said, as she took a look around. It was all perfectly set out. “You know me far too well.”
“Well, considering how long we have been married…..” Albus started, but he was silence by Minerva’s next comment.
“And what is that supposed to mean?” She said with a look of mock anger on her face and a cushion in hand.
“Nothing!” Albus began, and again was cut off by Minerva, this time by the cushion thrown at him. Albus picked up his own cushion from a nearby sofa, and readied himself. Minerva laughed as she summoned back the cushion she had just thrown.
--------------------
“Is it ready now?” The male voice asked, as his sister stood over the mirror.
“Yes, take a look,” she replied, beckoning him over. As he began to walk over to her, a crunch could be heard beneath his feet. The man looked down, a small pile of clean bones lat there. With a shrug, he walked over to the mirror.
“What is so special about it now?” He asked angrily.
“You’ll see. Be patient, my dear older brother,” the woman said, as she leant over a touched a single finger to the glass, which rippled like water as an image was produced upon it.
“What is this?”
“Shush!” the woman chastened him, motioning for him to watch.
The image was of Minerva’s new rooms, everything in place, immaculate to the last detail. Then the woman pointed to the mantel, where a large space was left empty.
“That is were the mirror needs to be placed, can you do that?” she asked.
“Easily, it doesn’t seem that hard. Though, what about wards and such-like?” the brother turned to face his sister, a questioning look upon his face.
“The mirror will place a set of charms upon you as you take it in, on the way out; you are on your own. Sorry, my magic, albeit strong as it is, won’t be able to sustain the wards you would need to get out,” his sister replied, shaking her head. “I am sorry, though you can use the time to get to grips with the layout of the castle, if you like.”
“Now, there’s an idea. Am I to do this at night?”
“Yes, then the only opposition will be the prefects, and about three professors. Nothing much for you at all.”
“Good. How am I meant to carry it, though? It isn’t that portable, you know.”
“I’ll shrink for you. Please be careful with this, and whatever you do, DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS!” the sister warned, taking out her wand and tapping the mirror softly. It shrank to the size of a CD case.
“How can you touch it, then?”
“It is my creation, I alone am meant to touch it. If you do, I am not sure of the consequences.”
“Then it is tonight.”
“Tonight indeed.”
