I notice some people have stars different from others. what exactly do the stars mean? Also what are the rankings, like first year/ preparing for O.W.Ls? I was just curious.

about the stars I_m not so sure...guess somethin to do with the number of your post or how often your here...
...Throu I know about the first year/preparing for O.W.L.s-thing.
Thats about how many post you've got...If you're registered but have 0 post, you're 'preparing to be sorted'; if ya posted minimum 1 till ahh...guess 25 you're 'first year'...26 till 50 are 'gryffindore seeker'...51 till 75 are 'having a butterbeer at the three broomsticks'...76 till...maybe 100 are 'at the quidditch world cup'...and so on....prefect...career advice....leaving feast...and prof. of transfiguration....guess that's the highes you can get...for the rest ya need to have 'conections'... ;D
...Not that the board can be corupded... ;D
