Okay, this is a really ridiculous question, but it's been bugging me for awhile. What does AU actually STAND for? Like, I basically know what it means, but what are the letters for?
Thanks for indulging my random stupidity- *lizz

AU stands for, I believe, Alternate Universe. A story is referred to as AU when it strays away from the canon of the universe that Jo has set up for her characters.
The characters in an AU story may act in a manner that they never would in the books, example: Harry and Snape as lovers (Yuck) or people who are dead come back to life (example: a story set after the OotP that has Sirius alive and well).
Hope that helps.

Does AU really mean they can be OOC? Ohh, I thought it just meant they changed cannon and who dies... Oops. No wonder AU annoys me sometimes...
