A/n: I am a big fan of the film Evil Under the Sun, which starred Maggie. I felt that there was a story needing to be penned about the possible couple of Kenneth Marshall and Daphne Castle, so I have decided to attempt one myself. Contains spoilers of Evil Under the Sun.
Daphne Castle stood on the platform and waved off Monsieur Hercule Poirot as he left her beloved island in the Adriatic’s, his visit had been marred with the murder of her old sparring partner Arlena Marshall. Daphne had tried to keep the murder a low-key affair so that her business wouldn’t be affected but sure enough, word had leaked out and once the Redfernes had been arrested and taken off the island the press turned up. Daphne was far from happy and soon sent the reporters on their way; she didn’t want them sticking their big lens cameras in. Of course she didn’t want her business to be affected but also she was concerned about her long time friend and Arlena’s husband, Kenneth Marshall and his daughter Linda.
Hercule Poirot had been right when he had picked up the tenderness between her and Kenneth when he had been investigating Arlena’s death. She had been willing to give Kenneth an alibi when it had come down to that, she had nearly ended up getting him into trouble when she had been found out to be lying. It had been at that point when she had discovered her true feelings for her friend and she hadn’t been able to lay them at rest since she had discovered them. She had known him for at least fifteen years; she had been friendly with his first wife and thus, forged a friendship with him. He had been heartbroken when Linda’s mother had died; Arlena Stewart had used that to her advantage and tricked him into marrying her.
Daphne adjusted her summer hat and made her way back into the hotel, she smiled as she passed her remaining guests and wandered back into her office. She sat down behind her desk and pulled out her logbook, she scanned the large blank pages and sighed. It looked like she had a few quiet weeks ahead of her, a knock on her door broke into her thoughts and she couldn’t help but smile when she saw who it was.
“Kenneth,” she greeted with a welcoming smile “are you packed?”
“Well no,” he admitted as he walked into the office and shut the door behind him
“Oh Ken,” she said with an amused sigh “you really are useless. Your boat leaves in ten minutes.”
Kenneth smiled and played with a pen on her desk, he knew his boat was coming in ten minutes but he and Linda had decided to remain for a few extra days. Their holiday had been interrupted by the death of Arlena and the whole thing had shaken Linda up, she didn’t like Arlena but all the questioning had taken its toll on the whole Island. Kenneth also wanted to talk to Daphne away from the prying eyes of her other guest and decided that staying a few more days would be the best thing to do.
“I am not catching the boat,” he told simply and offered no explanation “I hope we can keep the rooms we have already.”
“Well yes,” replied Daphne with a slight frown, she wished that he would explain his change of plans “the rooms you have are still available. I am afraid that it is going to be rather quiet this week, I have no other bookings.”
“I see no problems with that Daphne,” he said with a smile as he got to his feet and made for the door “Linda and I will see you at five for drinks.”
Daphne watched him leave her office with confusion, her curious mind wanted to know why he was staying. Surely the place where ones wife was murdered was not the place you wanted to stay for a few extra days, but then the marriage hadn’t been a happy one and he was probably quite relieved to be out of it. Daphne was grateful for one thing; she had some more time to spend with Kenneth and Linda.
Drinks were laid on at five every day and when Daphne walked in, she was very aware of how empty the place looked but that changed as soon as Kenneth and Linda made an entrance. They both walked over to her with smiles on their faces and Linda embraced Daphne before wandering off to the drinks table where she tried to convince the attendant that she was old enough to drink.
“Care for a walk?” Kenneth asked her
“What about Linda?” she asked
“She tells me that she has a good book in her room to read,” he replied as he offered her his arm “and that she doesn’t want to see me for a few hours.”
They both laughed as they made their way out into the evening air, the sea breeze enveloped them as they walked in an amicable silence. They were both looking out into the sea as they both stopped in their tracks at the same time.
“It really is beautiful here!” he exclaimed
“I often sit out on the balcony and take in this view,” remarked Daphne “In my view this is the best view point of the whole island.”
“Well I not so sure about that.” Kenneth replied, as he looked straight into her eyes “I quite like this view!”
“Oh you are such a tease Ken!” she said batting his chest playfully with her hand.
As she pulled her hand away from his chest, he caught it and brought her palm of her delicate hand to his lips and placed a soft kiss on it.
“I never truly thank you for what you did for me Daphne.” He said looking into her blue eyes.
“Oh Ken,” she answered softly “I very nearly made things worse for you.”
“Did you think I had done it?” he asked seriously as he cupped her cheek
Daphne shook her head; she didn’t believe that Kenneth would murder Arlena. She knew that he didn’t have a violent bone in his body but she knew that he would be the prime suspect and so she had tried to cover him. She subconsciously lent into his touch and smiled softly.
“I knew you were innocent Ken!” she answered softy
“I thought as much,” he replied “you were trying to protect me and I thank you for doing that. That meant a great deal to me and you do as well.”
Without warning, Kenneth lowered his head and brushed his lips against hers. She was startled at first and didn’t kiss him back but as she felt him start to pull away she kissed him back. Wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him to her, she made the bold step of deepening the kiss. She ran her tongue against his bottom lip and silently begged for him to part his lips for her, he did and they sensually battled for dominance with their tongues. Both wanted to break the kiss but they both needed to breath and the only way to do that was to break the blissful kiss. They broke apart and Kenneth rested his forehead against hers.
“Do you think we could make a go of it?” he whispered
“I think we can!” she answered with a smile before pressing a tender kiss on the tip of his nose.
Without another word, they continued their walk around the island hand in hand.
The End!
