I think this is very disturbing...
Also, somewhere in the article, the woman says the boks are only about murder and... greed.
Seriously.
Greed? When was this about greed?
In my (shallow? little?) mind, this is a story, something that happens in a fantasy world, where children fight for good, against evil. But hey - who am I to say sucha thing?

Yep, I guess we are just too involved to be able to see it for what it really is, a ridiculous book that is going to be encouraging the younger generation to practice witchcraft.
Right. Because we all know that Wicca is JUST like Harry Potter.
I brought up my internet explorer, and that was the first thing I saw on AOL's homepage.

Ok, I haven't read the article, but I have read various news blurbs about this...and I'll be the one to sound like a character on GA. Seriously. This is so utterly ridiculous...my dad is a minister and he thinks the books are great; he once said they they are just the old battle of goodvsevil in new and fascinating packaging. People are so stupid. Seriously.

www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=bbwlinks&Template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=136590(click through to get the entire list) This is a link for the 100 most challenged books of the 20th century. I think I read about 60 of them... and enjoyed them. Most of them were on my must-read list for English classes in the late nineties. Especially The Color Purple became one of my all-time favorites. Why would people challenge books like that? Oh, on the general ALA site, you can find out the most popular banned books ever... guess what they are

Isn't HP on the top of th emost-challenged list? I thought I saw that in the article...

Yeah, it is - this list is one of the 20th century, so no HP on it, but we all know that it is the most popular banned book now.
I just saw Winnie the Pooh was once banned... imagine that!!!

I feel sorry for her children. Imagine having such a prejudiced, bigoted, narrow-minded *is stuck for a word that describes just how stupid she is* mother.

I feel sorry for her children. Imagine having such a prejudiced, bigoted, narrow-minded *is stuck for a word that describes just how stupid she is* mother. How about a "close minded bitch of Dolores Jane Umbridge proportions"? Has she even read the books? Because if she hasn't she should just take her right to free speech and shove it down her throat because she doesn't even have the right to an opinion in this matter. The article says she has been trying to ban these books for a year. She should have been spending that time hanging out with her kids and making a positive impact upon their lives rather than showing them how narrow minded and ridiculous she is.

People like that give Christians a bad name. Not everyone freaks out when their child has a little imagination and likes to read!

people like this make me want to move to Canada, I mean good god...they're the same people that want Halloween banned from schools because it promotes satanism. I'm not really religious, but I do have a fairly good understanding of the teachings of Jesus, and no where in them does banning books one thinks are amoral come into it...uggg

"the series fostered rebellion and encouraged witchcraft."
Wow.
My aunt won't let me even talk about the books in front of her children. So crazy. She's the same way.
Before I start my rant let me say that I am a Christian. I am willing to openly discuss my faith and do on many occassions. I've even mentioned stuff on this board. That being said...
Even if the books do promote Wicca in some subtle way, SO WHAT??? I'm sure there are many books that could be said to promote Christianity there as well and I don't see her protecting the rights of non-Christian, religious children. I'm all for the promotion of different, non-extremist, tolerant, non-violent faiths! I wish instead of taking things out of schools they would just chuck them full of info and history about every religion out there and the non-religious ideas as well! Information is power and I worry about a generation of children taught that believing in something bigger than them is bad.
I was already a bit peeved before reading this. Today, Adam and I were listening to This American Life on NPR. There was a story about a 4th grader who is Muslim and lives in America. Her class read a book about 9-11 which taught them that ALL those who follow Islam hate and want to kill Americans. This lead to her classmates mocking her. Her mom talked to the teacher who told her there was nothing that could be done as the book was being taught across the district. Then during December the teacher brought in a CHristmas book everday and told the kids that the blood of Jesus would save them and those who didn't believe in the blood would perish in the fires of hell for all eternity.
I would have killed the teacher.
The principal and the teacher met with the Mom and once again nothing was done. The kids were incredibly cruel to the point that they ended up moving.
I guess the Justice Dept got involved and there was a settlement. The whole school has to go through Diversity training and the teacher was in big trouble. But what about that poor girl. I was so angry. How can a teacher do that to someone? I really feel the same way about this woman in GA. How can a mother think like this?

OMG some people just need to get a life. Like my stepdad who is my personal male version of Umbitch. He's even corrupting my Mommy who is sadly persident of the PTA and I'm afraid she's gonna bring up the banning HP in the next PTA meeting :S It's sad her daughter is like the biggest HP mainly ADMM freak in school and she's doing this. I hate her at times. She's my other personal version of Umbitch.

ugg that sounds like my elementary school. it got a new principle, and she is one of those crazy folk, and has actually banned Halloween from he school, and we used to ave this really cute halloween parade and the martching band would play and we'd all martch through town, and now it's banned. I wouldn't put it past her to try and ban HP and any other interesting book...thankfully our school board is cool, and even tried to put limits on the millitary recruters and such...gack but thats a whole other rant there
mcgonagallrocks, not to sound like a bitch or anyhting, but boy does your tepdad sound like an ass

Don't get me started on this stuipid woman. Seriously. More than any other point about how everything she is saying is bullshit and wrong. She hasn't even read the books. Enough said.
Futhermore, witchcraft in the sense which she means it doesn't exist. The closest thing is Wicca which is a very peaceful religion, if you link it at all to witchcraft which you can't really.
She's a narrow-minded, small, petty, attention-seeking, weak, miserable, usless at arguing (evidently) bitch. But she is persistent, I'll give her that. Just seriously. *rollseyes*
If it were possible I'd slap some sense into her.

Yes she does. Sadly she thinks I'm turning into a witch or something. The woman is a hyporcrit. She watches Charmed. Oh of course that's ok. For gods sake it's closer to Wicca than HP is.

Oh dear It's just silly. An obviously made-up book about a made up person, world, magic, etc etc is promoting witchcraft. Eh? So if we ignore how it always does Christmas and Easter, and ignore that it favours the good guys, is a good Vs evil fight where good should win where on earth do they get witchcraft from? Magical spells - er fiction! It really irritates me. And who are people to say witchcraft is bad? Wicca is good, and that's all that remains of witchcraft. It's nto fair of anyone to slander other religions on no grounds over a series of fictional books! And I notice how a lot of Christians make a fuss over this, and it's a shame because the majority of sensible ones see the books for what they really are and that is overshadowed. *Sigh* They just don't promote witchcraft. /rant. I hope it works out for you with your mum and HP books.

Been gone for ages so I'll make my appearance here- I read about this woman and she really is a quack. While i try to understand how she feels i find that i can't. To take away all harry potter books.. So i agree Ms. (or Mrs.) Laura Mallory truly is the idiot of the year.

I don't know what people have against Harry Potter. I mean, 'they promote greed?' Where? I would like to see where she found evidence they promoted greed. If I remember correctly, the books state VOLDEMORT, who is EVIL to the EXTREME promotes greed. Not Harry or any of his friends. And, honestly, 'they promote witchcraft?' I'll bet she has no problem with her children reading Cinderella, but she wants to ban Harry Potter? Some people.

*rolls on floor laughing arse off* I just read that list of 100. I've read all of them except for five! hehehe...okay I'm over that now and will come to terms with the fact I am definitely going to hell. Dang... What is that woman on about?!?!?! Promotes greed? What a load of BS. Urgh! I respect that people have an opinion and hey if you want express it (except if it's near me and negative to Harry Potter. Then I strongly suggest shutting your mouth) but banning it? That woman officially (in my Vet student humble opinion) has pig dung for brains!
