I have been rereading OOtP, and it occured to me a few days ago that maybe the reason Dumbledore puts trust into Snape leaving Voldemort's side is because Dumbledore may be (isn't he?) a Legilimens. However, Snape is a great Occlumens. What if Snape is hiding his allegence to Voldemort from Dumbledore? Not sure if I believe this, btw, because half of me wants to believe he is loyal to Dumbledore, but half of me still wonders about it. I'm interested in what all of you think!

I think Snape is on his own side. Regardless of whether or not he killed Dumbledore on Dumbledore's orders, I can't see him siding with a group that puts Harry Potter as number one, (which they would because of the prophecy, regardless of if they knew its contents. Snape certainly would be able to draw the correct conclusions.)
On the other hand, I can't see him siding with a 'man' who regularly tortures his followers, and makes them bow down to him. Snape seems more of a lone wolf to me. I think he gets off on power over others, and bullying Harry, Neville etc. But I don't think he would follow Voldemort to the end, so to speak. More likely he has used his position as a spy to have the best of both worlds, so that regardless of which side wins, he can turn around and say, 'I was a spy for them.'

Well... I do believe that Snape is on the light side... He owes too much to Dumbledore, and though I do believe that he'd just use his position as spy for both sides to some extend to his own advantage, I just can't see him turning his back on Dumbledore when it really matters.
Yeah, I know, he killed him in book 6 but regardless of that I still think that he did it on Dumbledore's orders. As we see in book 5, Snape's had an abusive father, and with the marauders being around at school probably didn't help to brighten his time at Hogwarts either. So I guess it was just a logical consequence for him to turn to the Dark side cause it seemed to offer something that the Light side couldn't: respect.
Of course, he was wrong but he saw that at some point.

I think he's on Dumbledore's side. Regardless of the fact that he's a -ahem-Dastard, he seems loyal enough, especially to someone who's saved his bum a few times AND given him a job. I think that he wouldn't harm the man who gave him a chance whether he's snarky or not. But I love Snape, so... I'm a little biased

I can't decide and have given up trying to reason it out. I am just going to wait until JKR tells us, or doesn't which is probably more likely the case.

I think she'll tell us. Far too big of a plot thread to be left untended.
I personally think it was the Unbreakable Vow that messed up Dumbledore and Snape's plans. Snape couldn't very well refuse it - Narcissa and Bellatrix would has suspected his loyalty to Voldemort and when he told Dumbldore, Dumbledore came up with a new plan, one that involved sacrificing himself.

I think that's where a lot of people get the theory that Dumbledore is not dead. Works for me and my wannabe optimistic self! haha

I am not sure.... hence how I voted. Neither side really fits snape, and I think he is only between them for himslef. Think bout it.... When voldie was in power that was the side snape was on. When oldie was not he was on AD's. I am begaing to think he dose what will benifet him.

There must be some reason why he killed Dumbledor...other than he's evil...there just has to be.

I think that the reason why Snape is on Albus' side is because I think that Albus asked Severus to kill him. That way, Snape can keep his promise with Narcissa and Draco would not have to dirty his hands with using an unforgivable curse. Also, when it says that Albus said, "Please, Severus", I think he was pleading with Severus to kill him. And, although this wasn't asked, I believe that Albus is coming back. I believe this because his familiar is a phoenix, and phoenix's rise again from the ashes. ~mmadlyinlove~

Albus isn't stupid, so Severus would have to be on his side...I have convinced myself that Dumbledore never died...=) Isn't the imagination lovely.

Severus is one of those people who does what needs to be done whether he likes it or not. I don't think that he was necessarily on anyone's side per say. He was doing what he needed to do to survive. It got him well enough for awhile. I think that he cared about Albus, but I don't think he was looking for a best friend in him. Severus was the man who was for himself and with everything he had to go through, I get that.
