I'm not going to vote...but here's my two cents. I thought Richard was amazing, which of course he was, but I think Michael could be great too. Dumbledore becomes more than just an eccentric old wizard as the books progress. I think Michael does that pretty well, but I think people would like him more if he would just read the books. He would have a much better understanding of the character and would be able to use that to improve his portayal of Albus. But really, I like them both...a cross between the two would be great though.

Definatly, definatly Richard! I think it's like childminerva kinda said, Michael doesn't really... understand the character of Albus Dumbledore because he hasn't read the books.

I can go either way, really. I mean, I just like the Richard Harris version more. You're right, Michael does do it his own way, which isn't bad at all. I just like the Richard Harris version only cuz I never had a grandfather and that is the type of grandfather I would want. Hehe. ~mmadlyinlove~

I agree with childminerva, I think a cross between the two would be perfect. RH had the calm, regal aspect of Dumbledore down pat, but his was a little too...idolized, whereas MG has that quirky, human side of him. Now the idolized version did work for the first two because Harry was young and only saw the good in him, but as the books go on, we see the more human side if him, and then the RH version wouldn't have worked as well, though I'm sure he could and would have evolved. I wish we could create a hybrid of the two
and MG def needs to read the books, not only for the character, but just because

MG has that quirky, human side of him. Now the idolized version did work for the first two because Harry was young and only saw the good in him, but as the books go on, we see the more human side if him yep...I was glad to see that in the 4th movie, the scared, angry, human side of Albus. But I could tell that Michael still didn't really get it.

Michael Gambon does my head in! Oh the man is destroying the best character ever written! It makes me furious! I could go on like that forever, seriously. Either read the books or do us a favour and quit. Personally I think the perfect Dumbledore would be Ian McKellen, that's who I picture when I'm reading the books. Michael plays Dumbledore much too aggressively. Like the scene right after Harry's name comes out of the Goblet. AD would never grab a student like he did, in fact, he almost hexed Umbridge for shaking a student in OotP! Gah!! Okay, I'll stop now... ~Aphelion~

Richard all the way, but like 'aphelion' said, Ian McKellon (Gandalf in LotR if you didn't know) could also make a fantastic Dumbledore.

I would have loved Ian McKellen too play the part as well, aphelion, but I did love RH. I was so sad when he died. I think he did such a wonderful job that would take a lot to replace him and MG just doesn't have that. I wish he did, but he doesn't get it.

I don't vote for this, because I like them both. Yeah - I know, but i am peculiar anyway. I likethe human side Gambon gives to Dumbledore and we also have to remember that he followes his director.
I would have chosen Peter O'Toole myself as a worthy follow-up to Harris, but no-one seems to back me up on this. Pity...

I voted Richard. For me he was the perfect Dumbledore, and was almost exactly as I imagined him when reading the books. I agree 100% with aphelion MG is terrible. He just doesn't get the caracter. When I read ADMM fics it is still Richard that I visualise. (just my two pence)

Richard was great...but when I read Albus (before the movies) I saw someone more like Michael, not visually, but his voice is exactly what I imagined. But when I found out they were making the movies, I wanted Ian McKellen too, then when Richard died I wanted him to be cast again...he would have been perfect!

I HATE Michael Gambon, don't get me started on him... In fact, too late. Dumbledore is nothing, nothing at all like Michael Gambon portrays him to be. He's completely wrong for the role, he doesn't act like Dumbledore is in the books, he's never that angry, violent and Grr! I hate him. he's a rubbish actor in it. I loved Richard Harris, he was perfect, he had quirkiness but was calm and just very Dumbledore. I also would love Ian McKellen to be Dumbledore.

Oh,Richard, definitely. I don't like Michael's Dumbledore. He's too grumpy and manhandling.Book Dumbledore is cool, calm and collected.I cringe at the bit where he grabs Harry and asks him if he put his name in the goblet. I call upon an OOTP book quote: "I cannot permit you to manhandle my students,Dolores."
I join the group who wants Ian McKellen as Dumbledore. I watched LOTR 3 last night for the first time ever on Channel 4 and spent the whole time with my brother going "Oh my God...he is Dumbledore. He is spot on. He is just...Dumbledore. Why won't they get him to do it?"

I think he didn't want to do it because he is already synonymous with his LOTR character.
