'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' - it was a great book, and it is a superb movie. However, I have no doubt that it wouldn't be as good without Maggie Smith's performance. Mannerisms, voice, she WAS Jean Brodie. Simply superb.

I agree with MinnieQuill, though I must say that the movie that comes after that would be Ladies in Lavander. Great movie, but 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' is still my all time favourite

Her monologue in Talking Heads, "Bed Among the Lentils," was brilliant. It's a great story and she does the character wonderfully. Anyone who's spent any length of time behind the scenes in the Church has seen those characters, alas.
It's never been released in USA video format, and the VHS I made when it ran on PBS never came back when I loaned it to a friend. If anyone has it in USA video format I'd pay good money for a copy.

I havent seen them all so I have no idea. And I cant even compair them all! I just love them. lol. I do have to say that seeing her play a part where she kills people is very interesting. I think you sould all see "Mums the word" Its one of the greatest movies.

I don't think I've seen nearly enough of her movies to be a fair judge, but I do love A Room with a View and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, which are my two favourite books. She plays my favourite characters from those books (which I read before I saw the movies, so I'm not just saying that) and I can't see anyone else in those roles.
Strangely enough, she also starred in my two favourite Shakespeare plays, Othello and Much Ado About Nothing. Funny how that happened. I really want a recording of the Much Ado production with her, I've never seen it.

The Anglophile: I havent seen enough movies to be fair either. And I am trying to get all of her movies on DVD so I have them. It is not going to work... I have little hope for it. But I am still going to try until the day I die. lol. I really want to see Othelo, and I never put together that the movie Much Ado About Nothing was Shakespeare. idk why. I am just stupid like that. lol

I had to order 'Jean Brodie' as a video and then get my friend to transfer it to DVD. But I have it now! As for all her others, it's a lengthy process, but I am slowly but surely expanding my DVD collection. I need 'Othello' though... *runs to steal Dad's credit card*

The Talking Heads series is now on DVD. I don't know if it's avaliable in a US version, but the PAL ones will play on a PC. I bought it here www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/717706/The-Complete-Talking-Heads/Product.html I think it's impossibe to pick my favourite Maggie film. I've seen most of them now (the ones that are still avaliable anyhow) and I think I prefer some of her lesser known ones. Although I think she was sensational in California Suite and Ladies in Lavender too.

I don't think Othello is on DVD. At least al I could find was VHS. It'd be nice to have them put it on a DVD and restore it a bit, the colour's all funky on mine
oh and Fav movies, well Obviously Jean Brodie, then Room With a View and First Wives Club are another two favorite movies and Keeping Mum was great. I really need to see THe Lonely passion one(can't remeber the entire name, damnit) I've seen clips and they're amazing, I just don't really know whats going on

I'd say 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie'... it's one of my favourite books and she is just fantastic as Jean. I also like 'Death on the Nile', cause she and Bette Davis (whom I like too) are just wonderfully bitchy together.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie but right after that would be Curtain Call which is one of the sweetest movies ever and then Gosford Park

It is a toss up between the following
- The Honey Pot - Othello - Evil Under the Sun - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - The V.I.Ps

My favorite has to be either The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie or The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne. They are both SPECTACULAR.
But I've really been meaning to see Ladies in Lavender, I've seen the previews and I've been DYING to see it.

I JUST watched Keeping Mum with a friend tonight, and it is SO FUNNY! A bit wacky at times, but really just a funny, funny movie. Anyway, so although I do think The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is my favorite Maggie Smith movie, you should all see Keeping Mum if you haven't already!

I loved The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie- Maggie was SO PERFECT in it!!! I also loved My House in Umbria, Gosford Park, A Room With A View, and Much Ado About Nothing; but I have to say that Tea With Mussolini was my favourite Maggie movie. Her character (Il Scorpioni) supports Mussolini, and Maggie did SUCH a stupendous job with that role!

Unfortunatelly, I've only seen a few. Gosford Park is one of my favourite films in general, and I love Maggie commenting on everything that goes on . But it's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. When she says "I do not intend to devote my prime to PETRIFICATION" I can't help laughing.

I haven't seen as many as I would like, because I'm not going to buy a movie if I don't know I will watch it enough, and the hire store and library don't have them.
That said, probably Keeping Mum and My House in Umbria

I forgot Hook! *whacks self in head* That is only one of my favourite movies of all time. The line 'Hello, boy...' It always makes me want to cry, and then the 'I've forgotten how to fly.' I do cry then. It's rather pathetic.

She's also rather funny in Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood pal.
I love her in all the movies she's done, but i've not seen any of her older stuff so can't comment on that. Ummm might have to go and buy Sister Act...i'd forgotton how funny those movies are!

I loved Maggie in the Sister Act movies. I've only seen parts of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Divin Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. I've seen Ladies in Lavender and My house in Umbria, but I didn't like those ones as much.

Divine-Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood I loved her in that. She was so funny, but in a way like the great Maggie always does she held everyone together.
