As someone who has only really recently become interested in Minerva/Albus, I was wondering whether you all felt any preference when it came to the potrayal of Dumbledore and the way that impacted the existing (or apparently, lack of a) relationship between them.
Do you think that the change in actors does or doesn't impact the character of Dumbledore and his relationship with Minerva?
Personally, I do prefer Michael Gambon's potrayal of Dumbledore because I believe he gives the character a little more liveliness. For example the way he kind of has a little spring in his step or runs up to a character. I always imagined when I was reading the books that Dumbledore may be old, but he was still...quick. On the other hand, I do believe Dumbledore would look more like Richard Harris' portrayal of him. Though, again, I do prefer the way Michael Gambon's Dumbledore looks.
So I guess I would imagine Dumbledore (personal preferences aside), he would look like Richard Harris but would move like Michael Gambon.
As for the interaction with Minerva, the dance at the Yule ball is a plus for Michael Gambon, obviously. In fact, if I am honest, that may have been the first time I really thought of them as an item. Part of the reason why I say that is because I only recently saw the first two movies again and I could not even remember seeing the first sequence with Albus and Minerva.
Another reason why I never really thought about it is because, to be honest, I didn't there would be anyone who also share an interest in their relationship. And I never bothered to search on the internet otherwise I would've come across this board for sure.
And on that note, I will cease my pointless babble. Thank you and I hope I didn't screw this up too much!

I liked Richard Harris the most.
I do like some of the hostility that Gambon brings to Dumbledore, but I don't like how he's ALWAYS like that in the movies. I really would have been interested in seeing how Richard Harris would have portrayed Albus, especially in the dance scene in the fourth movie. He looked at Maggie Smith in the first movie with that loving expression on his face as if he were a MMAD shipper as well, I can't help but wonder how he would have been in that dance scene with her. Gambon was so cold!

I prefer ebul!roohless!manipulative!probablygaywithGrindelwald!Dumbledore.
But this was not an option. So I voted for Richard Harris because
1) He was hot as a young person 2) He's Richard Harris 3) His Albus could beat up Gambon's Albus 4) I would pay serious cash to watch him fight Godzilla 5) He's Richard Harris 6) I can see his Albus being ebul!roohless!manipulative!probablygaywithGrindelwald!Dumbledore in his youth 7) Napkin rings are not appropriate hair accessories 8) He's Richard Harris
Obviously, my logic is irrefutable.

ebul!roohless!manipulative!probablygaywithGrindelwald!Dumbledore. oh dear god, Sir Francis Drake's Heir, I may love you. I voted Richard Harris, because he's Dumbledore. He was Dumbledore when I was 10 and the first movie came out, and I got used to him, and I loved him, and Gambon only came along when I was slightly older. I may just be clinging to my childhood here, but indulge me. Also, I can really see Richard Harris' Dumbledore as the Dumbledore that loves muggle sweets and wears extraordianry clothes and has the eyes that WON'T STOP TWINKLING. Buuuuuuuut, I was went to see OotP again today, and for some of it I was actually thinking, 'ah, you can be Dumbles if you want to be' because I didn't think he was really that bad. I hated how he ignored Harry, I think it should have been handled differently, and I hated his psychotic-Harry-shaking break in GoF, but apart from all the bad stuff, I can accept him as Dumbledore now. And, I get less squicked if I think of him with Minerva if it's lemon-time. Richard Harris' Dumbledore...the beard was just too long. Images...*shudders* But Richard Harris, definitely. Not completely, but yeah, Richard Harris = wootwoot

Richard Harris! Ah, how I do miss him. Granted, Michael Gambon did his best Dumbledore in OotP, in my opinion, so I'm hoping that he's improving. However, Harris is always the Dumbledore I envision when reading the books and reading fanfiction. Harris seems like he could be the kind of Dumbledore to love his lemon drops (and Minerva!) and be able to keep calm no matter what- NOT go psycho and shake Harry in GoF when the book plainly says that Dumbledore was calm about the situation. All in all, I believe that which actor you prefer for our dear Bumblebee depends upon how you like to think of Dumbledore's character.

Richard Harris' Dumbledore...the beard was just too long. Ah yeah... I have to agree with that. And his hair was kinda...weird. In GoF when we had that flashback scene through the pensieve, Dumbledore's hair looked believable. But on the other hand one of the ways Dumbledore is described is as an eccentric - the wacko hair kind of adds to that. Harris seems like he could be the kind of Dumbledore to love his lemon drops (and Minerva!) True! I have yet to see Michael Gambon's Dumbledore looking half as fondly at sweets. Richard Harris played a wonderful sweet tooth and being one myself, I really do appreciate that because honestly, sweets are addictive and you have to be passionate about them. Ahem. Yeah. I still think Michael Gambon's Dumbledore is more aesthetically pleasing. *cough* Yes... Though that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I only really started following HP after I saw PoA. I'm fickle, in case you're wondering.

Just so you all know...I moved this thread as it fit better in the poll section.
Anyway, I voted for a mix. Because there are times when I read the books and see Harris, and sometimes I see Gambon, depending on how Albus is acting in the books. Harris is the kind, grandfatherly, tear sliding down his nose Dumbledore and Gambon is every other kind of Dumbledore good and bad.
ebul!roohless!manipulative!probablygaywithGrindelwald!Dumbledore kinda freaked me out and I try to seperate that Dumbledore in my mind from the one I pair with Min, just so I can make it through the day w/ out gagging.

I put mix.I love Albus in the books and to me Richard Harris is Dumbledore. I had a major shipping session yesterday and watched all the ADMM scenes in all 4 films in a row, and the difference in Albus between 1+2 and 3+4 is unbelievable. The only way you can tell it's even the same character is by the name.

The only Dumbledore I liked is actually is in a fanfiction, does that count? And he's not so much likeable but more 'hey, that is how *I* see him?!' He's sort of like 'Deathly Hallows' Albus, but a tad more ... ruthless. Kind of how I envisioned. I won't go any further, I'm surprised I haven;t been lynched here to be honest. But there it is.
So, where the hell was I .... oh!
Albus in 'Young Again: The Re-Write.'

Yeah I wondered when I read Deathly Hallows and we learned of Dumbledore's rather unpleasent flaws I was thinking more of Gambon. (He is more of a wizard I would expect as defeating a great wizard.) Yet, things in Dumbledore's past happened 130 years later so I suppose Dumbledore would have changed. Off topic ( I found it strange that Dumbledore after 130 years of living would still have his past haunt him this badly). I thought in the first movies Harris was a really good Dumbledore, but I never got the idea of why Voldemort would be afraid of Dumbledore. He was too much of the kindly grandfather. I always had Dumbledore having a charming personality rather than having an appearence of being simply underestimated and a bit off kilter. But, Harris' Dumbledore never had the ability in the first two movies to really show his powers, but I expected a sort of powerful aura around him maybe even intensity. Harris was always very somber and had little real enthusiastic energy. I know that he was very ill and probably struggling when he was acting. But I also wanted Dumbledore to have a sort of youthful enthusiasm and intrigue, something both Dumbledore's lack. If there was a person that I felt could physically look like Dumbledore I think that Com Wilkison could completely pull it off. He is a broadway star, but I think that it could stretch. I agree w/ your thoughts about it being odd that after 130 yrs Dumbledore is still so wracked w/ remorse. Not that he wouldn't still be remorseful always, but it seemed odd to me that it would still have such power over him that he fell prey to the temptation of the Resurrection Stone so easily. He had achieved such wisdom in other ways, but this still had him totally powerless.
The Potterverse could use a few good therapists. ;D Or priestly confessors. But then there'd be no workable plot....
The movies are to have all-British casts so any recommends for prospective Dumbledores need to be British....

(spoilerspace)
I agree that it is weird that his past had such a great infulence on him still, but it was his sister and he felt responsible for her death so it was always to affect him greatly. And with his brother still blaming him as well it couldn't have made it easier.
wow, that was completely off-topic but....RICHARD HARRIS!!! there. and do we still need spoiler spaces? or has the book been out for long enough now???

Gambon was not born British. According to IMBD he was born in Dublin Ireland, he did move to England, but it should work!

Ireland is Britain too, it's just not England. At least I think it is. It's always so confusing with the two parts.... actually, Dublin is in Britain, thinking about it, because Belfast is the capital of S Ireland. so Gambon is British, he's just not English, and they do use other british actors for the movies. like Maggie Smith sorry if that seemed like I was ranting or giving a lecture....I didn't mean to!

A mix. Harris was so perfect for one and two, but if he lived, I honestly don't know if he could play the darker Albus.(Please don't send evil looks!). I believe Gambon is a fine actor, and perdect for some parts, as well as Harris being a great actor, and perfect for other parts.
