I just saw that there was a new rating system. At first I thought that this was something that only ff.net was doing. But now, as I read Angharad's new story, she mentioned something about the old rating system being forbidden. Does anyone know something about that? And if you know, can you enlighten me?

The MPAA has been sending "Cease and Desist" letters to various fanfiction sites that use what they term their "proprietary" ratings system. Fanfiction.net has instituted a new system of their own, and have declared it "proprietary" as well. The Digital Quill, where I've been invited to submit my stories, rather than wait to receive one of MPAA letters, has come up with another system, which reads as follows: S-A: Suitable for all audiences, including children S-PT: Suitable for Teens 13-17 S-MT: Suitable for Mature Teenagers 17-19 S-MA: Suitable for Mature Audiences I am using the Digital Quill system, since I'm one of their authors and they haven't declared the system to be exclusively theirs. I'll go back and add a note to my story indicating that the rating is from the DQ, so no one else gets confused. There may come a time, though, when this board needs to come up with its own rating system, or borrow another with permission. Obviously, the MPAA lawyers don't have enough to do...

You know, there is a claus in the law that says when something has been used in the language so many times that it becomes fair use. and I know that applys to photos, graphic images and words. Unless someone changes the rating system. G is a letter in the alphabet. it can stand for GOOD PG is Pretty GOOD R is Rediculous. N is Naughty M is Moldy! X is, well, followed by y&z
it also implys that each time that the rating system is used that someone is getting paid, I find that unlikely.
ah well. off to write a PRETTY GOOD Story...

there is also a rating system that has been created by a group of fans... for the fans... tfrrs.tripod.com/it's fairly close to the one posted by Angharad... and tis the one i've adopted for both my site, as well as for the lists i maintain.

Okay, here's a stupid question: why can't they just stick with the same old PG system that we all know and love? Does the change have sometime to do with legal issue or new and imporved violence and sexual content in art? (sorry but if it didn't happen before 1485 i have no idea what's going on. lol) cat

I am so unbelieveably, maddeningly, tired of bureaucracy. I'm about to give up on trying to understand ratings altogether. As long lemon warnings are given, I'm good. There's not enough room in my head for 5000 systems of letter ratings. Must the bureaucrats ruin everything?
