Richard Harris' calmness never made him OOC, whereas Gambon's 'energy' does. And that says it all for me. I imagine Dumbledore more eccentric and calm like Richard Harris portrayed him, but it doesn't mean he doesn't have energy. Gambons' energery means he can't be calm and eccentric (well he never portrays much eccentricity) which is just all wrong.
Richard Harris will always be Dumbledore.

Before I saw the first movie in theters I was very nervos about what they were going to do to my favorite book. I was, I think most afraid that DUmbledore was going to be OOC in the end while talking to Harry(that was my favorite part of that book) but I was highly impressed with how very close my imagination was to how other people prtrayed it. I think that Richard Harris was amazing. Much better than Gambons. A few days after the 3 movie came out I was livid because I hated the change in DUmbledore. I was ranting about it for weekes....if i remember correctly, and all of my friend s stared to ignore me. (How rude^__^ ) I think that Gambons is very OOC in both of the movies. I do agree that Harris was more fatherly, just as we were told he was in the books.

I HATE Gambons as Dumbledore. Richard Harris will always be the TRUE Albus Dumbledore. He played the part perfectly wheras Gambons is always angry && pissed off. I hate it!

I just wish that the scene that shows Albus using the pensieve with Minerva, Severus, and imposter Alastor around could have been with Richard Harris because I see him as better suited and complimentary to the way that Maggie Smith portrays Minerva then Gambon. Despite that this scene was not in the books I loved it!

Richard Harris was a MUCH better Dumbledore. Granted Gambon and Maggie are cute together she looks better with Richard at her side. *huggles my two favorite magical peoples* It's like replacing the Captian in the Sound of Music or something. Richard was SO much better. And Jessabelle I agree. That would have been really good with Richard in it. He just hit Dumbledore on the nose with how he acted. The night he died I watched every single movie with him in it I could find.

My brother has seen the 2nd, 3rd and 4th movies once each, and the first film twice. The second time he saw it, he said, "I like this Professor Dumbledore best. The other one is always shouting." Michael Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledore is as the typical 'great wizard'. While some of his scenes reflect how Dumbledore would react, he doesn't give off the calm, majestic and trusting grandfather air that Richard Harris did. I partly blame the costume designer; his robes aren't anything like how I see Dumbledore's, while Richard Harris' adorned, regal gownish robes are. The moment that I realised how wonderful an actor Richard Harris was, was in PS when he shouted, "SIIIILEEEENCE!" after the students started screaming at the troll. If he had done the scene with Crouch in GoF, it would have been one of the best film portrayals of a book character ever. That is how Michael Gambon should play him; sadly, I think he's too hot-headed. I don't think it's all his fault - that's how he acts; the directors should note that it's too big a change: younger fans may think it's a different character! Michael Gambon and Richard Harris look nothing alike, but the producers might have done something to change his costume and manner. I think he's too modern-looking, too scruffy, too short (JEEZ! Maggie's almost as tall - I always imagined Albus to be over six feet and Minerva around 5 ft 5-6 inches; the books don't actually describe her as tall), too loud, too angry, too rough, too coarse and too insensitive. The relationship between him and Minerva seems to be the headmaster and the second-in-command, as opposed to Richard and Maggie's portrayal of them as headmaster-and-deputy, if you know what I mean. R & M are like grandparents; M & M are like long-suffering colleagues. I suppose Michael Gambon does seem to have a notion of how Albus is supposed to act with Minerva: "Well, I have played her husband # times already" (don't know the quote v. well, hehe). Even so, they just don't look as good standing next to each other. Richard's Albus looked eccentric and loving. This one looks rough and crazy. As Maggie said, she and Richard walked around as a pair; I just don't seem to get that impression in PoA & GoF. I'm dreading the lake scene in HBP; I can imagine him to try and strangle Harry as a bit of *sarcatsic air quotes* 'realistic ad lib'. That's not for 2 years yet though; I'm just hoping he manages OotP better.

rofl! I laughed out loud when nemi said that this one looked "rough and crazy" because that was the first thing that I thought, too! I sort of liked how Richard's Dumbledore seems distant.. and I especially love the picture when minerva and albus (richard) are walking in a hallway somewhere and he is looking at her smiling and she is all strict and looking forwards. That picture... It's like a perfect snapshot of those characters' personalities. He's a bit distant, but doting and she pretends to be strict but is really caring. Michael's Albus annoys me a little, because of his fierceness. And I really want that acorn beard-tie to go away -cry- edit: It's not really his fierceness that bothers me so much as the constance of it. Dumbledore is a strong character, but Michael's seems to want to pounce on everybody a little too much. It's a little unsettling. Richard seemed a little more in-character and had better body language for the part, I think

It specifically says in HP and the GoF that Dumbledore CALMLY asked Harry if he had put his name into the goblet. In the movie, Gambon yelled and shook Harry. I hated that...
