I am in desperate need of a beta-reader, and not just any beta-reader.
I am already quite good at grammar/spelling (UK style), but could use a fresh set of eyes, but the main things I would like help with is plot, characterisation, story flow, and someone to help me organise my ideas. I would like someone who knows they are good. I originally wanted someone approved by a beta archive but all the sites out there were either messing me around with a different beta per chapter or didn’t accept my fics at all, simply because they’re too selective.
The ideal beta-reader would work with me on all my fics, not just one or two, and I have a lot planned/started, so it’s a big job that a lot of time would need to be available for.
Most of my fics tend to turn into series (I can’t help it, it’s just a weird fact of life) and some of them are very big and reasonably complicated. All my bigger fics (basically anything excluding some drabbles/one-shots) has at least an ADMM element, even if it’s not the main plot, which is why I’m advertising for someone familiar with and fond of the ship. The majority of them also are centric to Harry and Albus and/or Minerva though I have planned a few exceptions.
I should warn you I write slash/femmeslash (not always but about 60% of the time), and some of my ships are rather off-the-wall. Some examples would be Snape/Sirius and Harry/Rowena (though Rowena’s reincarnated in the fic, but it’s still unusual). I will never write Snape/Harry, bestiality or *proper* incest closer than cousins. (The closet is Ron/Ginny when the latter turned out to be adopted.) Neither do I do slash ships with large age gaps.
I don’t do lemons – the highest-rated sex scene would be PG-13 (T on FF.Net), *but* most of my fics are rated M for stuff like self-harm, child abuse, and other sensitive stuff. Angst is a common factor in all my fics – probably the most common. I do tend to go overboard sometimes but I like it. I’m not normally one for humour but I like to have to odd funny bit here and there, and occasionally a plot so bizarre it’s funny even if done in a serious manner.
Although I do like to “recycle” ideas (i.e. use them again in other fics) I always make sure to do it in a way that’s interesting and original. My most commonly used plot device is Harry being adopted, and a lot of the time the parents tend to be the same pair … I’ll say no more.
I prefer Harry when he’s younger, so 7th-year + fics are rare and in the ones set during Hogwarts years he has a tendency to act a little younger than in canon, simply because I think he’s grown up too fast, poor boy.
I have crossover ideas with Doctor Who, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Mediator, so being familiar with those would be a bonus.
At the moment, my largest and prioritised project is the Chameleon series, which I need a beta for most. The first in the series is started at FF.Net but I want to edit it for errors/length/minor plot changes, have it beta’d and re-post the content. I’ve advertised for a beta on the FA forums here but no replies so far. I didn’t think of advertising here till after I’d posted there. I need a beta ASAP, as I have over 100 readers waiting for that particular fic and I can’t post any more till it’s beta’d.
Please consider, I’m desperate.
If you want more info PM or email me at hplover_alexannah@yahoo.com. I can give you more details on fic content/plots/ships etc and probably more detail on what I’d like from a beta-reader.
PS: I've also advertised on FictionAlley so if you respond via email could you tell me if you saw the ad here? I helps with my decisions. Thanks.
