I think it's a great movie. I love the story. Friendship above all. How Sidda is trying hard to not look like her mother but she actually thous. Great story.
I think Maggie Smith is downing a very good Caro. With the yelling and drinking and that tank. But I think all the actress how are playing the YaYa's are good. Their are the YaYa's.

Ya Ya is one of my favorites. Love it, love it, love it. Complex plot, great multi-character development (ie not just the main characters) In fact I like it better the Steel Magnolias, which up to that point had been my favorite "girl" flick.
I love Maggie Smith it. Fionnula Flanagan is a favorite of mine as well after that movie.
Apparently the movie is a combination of the two books by the author ~ "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" and "Little Alters Everywhere". Has any one read either or both of these? And after seeing the movie would you recommend the books?

Speaking as someone who read the books first, I say definitely read them. They're way way better than the movie. Little Altars is a bit darker than Divine Secrets, but they're both very good. There's now a third one as well called Ya-Yas in Bloom. All written by Rebecca Wells, all good stuff. As for Mags in the movie... Caro is my favorite Ya-Ya anyway so that was just a bonus. Gotta love the Lousianna/English accent, Pal.

I really love the Ya ya's too, and have read both the first two books. Mags really made me laugh in the scene in the kitchen when she pours left over wine into her own glass and then gets annoyed when Teensy pours it down the sink. It's the kind of thing I would do (drink someone's leftover wine., not pour it down the sink! Disgusting alcoholic that I am!).
Can some Americans please comment as to Dame Maggie's accent in this film? She's usually very good at accents, but I found that one difficult to listen to. I don't have a frame of reference for how accurate it is, and it was definately weird to hear her deliver such a strong, not UK/Irish accent... mugs.x

That scene is hilarious .. lol .. Teensy splahes water at her off off the rubber glove and the Caro starts hitting her with the towel .. it is something that you would expect from little kids but it shows how good of a friendship they truly have to be able to do that with eachother ..

I would say that the accent is very good. Louisiana accents (says the FLA born NC resident ) are somewhat hard to follow and very difficult to listen to sometimes.

Oh, I love this movie!! That part when she goes,"Big kiss! Mwa!" is hilarious and so is that part when she starts hitting Teensy with the towel.. hahaha ;D. She was great in this movie. As for the accent, I too found it weird to hear Dame Maggie Smith with a Louisiana accent instead of her usual inquisit English/Irish accent!!
Also, I was wondering, is it Caro or Carol?
Big kiss! Mwa!

It's Caro, short for Carolina. READ THE BOOKS, LADIES, READ THE BOOKS! I promise you it's well worth the time spent, they're excellent books and quite different from the film.

I loved that movie. haha Maggie was too funny with her Louisiana accent. She did a fabulous job on it, because it's a very difficult accent to do, especially with her being English! I love the part when Maggie says that someone should go to the bathroom because it'll make the food come. ;D

I Love this movie!! The book is fantastic but a lot different from the movie, you have to read the book as well. Its the only Rebecca Wells book i've read but its fantastic, and very dark, much to dark to turn into a movie. I like the way the movie was done, it shows a dark past and how it is possible to overcome the odds. Love them both, am def gonna read more of her work.
And i love Maggie in it...she's fab, love the lines!
J
P.S love Gosford park too, i just love the line Maggie has in it... "Me i haven't a snobbish bone in my body!"

I think the movie was a great movie. Very realistic in a lot of relationships some daughters have with their mothers... And some people are lucky to have such great friends as those in the Sisterhood. I have three great friends.... I like to joke as say that I'm a mix between Maggie Smith's character and the character that doesn't drink.... I chew gum all the time and I'm an asthmatic who might need to carry an oxygen tank when I get older... Hehe. ~mmadlyinlove~

I love the movie. It's one of those movies that you can watch over and over and over again. It was playing constantly on HBO for a while and I watched it about twice a week just catching it. I started reading the book, saw the movie and then never finished them. I'd love to but I have no time...ever

Ya-ya was so funny...sad too. Maggie was amazing as always; I think she was actually one of the funniest women, and that's saying something! Gosford Park was great too...anything with Maggie is great.

Everybody says I'd be a mixture of Maggie Smith's character and the one who quits smoking and always chewing gum because (well, I'd be the second on for obvious reasons), and Maggie cuz I'd be the one to always carry around an oxygen tank. Hahaha. Me, being the asthmatic, of course. I'd be the one carrying my nebulizer or machine with me. Haha. ~mmadlyinlove~

Totally awesome film, not only because Maggie is in it (it helps!) but because of the photography and wonderful soundtrack!
My favourite line by Maggie is: "They all think we're alligator wresting bigots" and "Hold on pals, I'm gonna pop a lung!"
seriously, when I saw that in the cinema, the whole audience was paying more attention to my hysterical laughter than to the film!
This film shows that Maggie can do anything. The books are better than the film, as often, but they are heavy. Especially 'Little altars everywhere'. Worth a try though!

wee!!! I agree heartily. She's totally the best theatre and movie actor I ever came across. If Singapore shows Maggie's movies back to back, I would stay awake just to watch all of them.. ~~
