I usually don't do this sort of thing, ask for help with something related to school, that is. In this instance, though, I'm not too proud to ask. I wouldn't normally ask about something that I could do on my own with a bit of thought, but I'm finding myself with little time to do many things. Knowing that many of you are gifted in the area of mathmatics could someone possibly help me? Please, please, please? *gets down on hands and knees to beg* Find the value of x when: 18 (x/2 + x/6 + 10) < (5/9 * x) 18 I'll be extremely grateful to anyone who could help . -Kathy

I'm not going to give you the answer, but I'll give you the process that got me to an answer that at least works out when I plug the value of x back into the equation. First, distribute the 18 on each side into the parenthetical equation to get: (18x/2 + 18x/6 +180) < 90x/9 Then you can get rid of all the fractions by dividing. Get all the x's on one side of the < and divide again to get your answer. It'll divide evenly, so you have to change it by 1 to keep the inequality. Hint: You should end up with a negative value for x. When you plug that back into the original equation, it works out. Good luck and I hope I made sense and didn't lead you down the wrong path. P.S. I strongly protest anyone ever giving another member of this board the answer to any homework question. People do not learn this way and you are not actually helping someone when you give away answers. If I see this happening, I'm going to delete the posts with answers. Too bad we don't have a point system, or I'd threaten you with a real consequence. Just don't do it, all right? Give advice and helpful hints but NEVER the actual answer.

Wow.
High School: 1 year Pre Algebra 1 year Algebra 1 1 year Algebra 2
College: 1 semester Algebra 1 semester Algebra 2 1 semester Math for Liberal Arts
and you'd think I'd be able to figure out the answer to this problem, especially with Ginger Newts' formula right there, right?
Wrong.
*sigh*
Hence, I am a Performing Arts major

Hehe ... and this is eighth grade Algebra I, lol. Thank you a lot, ginger newts! A lot, a lot. I don't think I got the problem correct on my homework, but I did find the correct answer! x<-90 With a bit of time, some patience, and a chocolate chip cookie, it's amazing what you can accomplish! ;D -Kathy
