A/N: The year is 1950 and Minerva is working in the field of Transfiguration Research.
“Minerva you really need to get out more. If your idea of fun is attending a lecture on the properties of molecules during transfiguration than I am afraid I will have to intervene before it is too late.”
Minerva’s partner, who was busy jotting notes into her book, snickered in a very unladylike fashion. Minerva glared in her direction, a useless action since the ruddy witch was busy pretending not to notice the exchange. Minerva looked at her boss and tried to assess how serious the woman was being. Mrs. Bestingale was an older witch and had a very grandmotherly countenance. From Minerva’s first day she had clucked over her like a mother hen. Usually, Minerva could dissuade her from whatever path she was bent on that concerned Minerva’s social life but today things were going very different.
“You are the one who asked me to take a day off and this is how I choose to spend it. You said I could do whatever I wished as long as I was out of the building.”
The older witch sighed and leaned against the door. “Minerva you are working too much. You arrive before everyone else and leave after everyone else has gone. In addition, I have heard that you have been in on weekends as well and don’t try to deny it. I know how important this project is to you but I can’t allow my best, make that my two best researchers, to run themselves into the ground. And whether you realize it or not your work pace affects Maggie as much as it does you.”
For a moment Minerva looked chastised. Maggie was not only her work partner but she had also become a close friend. Maggie had been working for the department for over twenty years and was the best of the best. When Minerva started, Maggie had been a mentor to her and their relationship had grown into true friendship in only a few months. Although Maggie was nearly twice her age, Minerva found herself seeking her company more than with her friends from university.
However, her thoughts soon turned back toward her boss who was once again trying to manage her life. And Minerva was not one to let herself be railroaded into something she hadn’t chosen for herself. “I promise that I will not work beyond what I can handle and Maggie is well aware that she does not have to keep my hours. Now please may I get back to my samples before they are useless to me?”
The last sentence tumbled out of Minerva’s mouth before she thought about what exactly she was saying and to whom. And by the look on her department head’s face, it had been the wrong thing to say. Minerva started to apologize but did not get far before being cut off.
“You have just crossed the line, Minerva. This Friday night…yes, tomorrow…you will be picked up at your residence to be taken on a date. I have just the gentleman in mind. His name is Stephen and he has very similar tastes to your own. He is a bit older than you but I shouldn’t think that would be of any consequence. Besides, you can think of this as a great way to extend your social circles.”
Minerva started to protest but it seemed that her boss was far from finished.
“I am not done. You will also take a leave of absence starting immediately for one week, consecutively. At the end of the week you will be allowed back into the building and can return to your project.”
Minerva was in shock. She never figured her boss would go so far as to keep her away from the laboratory. “Mrs. Bestingale, surely there are other options. We are just getting to…”
“I will hear no more. You either take my earlier offer or I am afraid that I will have to add another week to your time off.”
“Tomorrow night it is.” Minerva’s voice was very formal and stiff. She felt ready to curse everyone in sight but there was no way she would risk having to take two weeks away from her project. One week was bad enough. She glanced at Maggie who had her hands covering her mouth and upon catching Minerva’s eye started to cough in an attempt to cover up her laughter.
Glaring at her friend and research partner, Minerva suddenly had a very Slytherin like inspiration. “Mrs. Bestingale, Stephen sounds very nice and I trust your judgment implicitly but since I do not know who this person is, perhaps I could take a friend with me and we can make this a double date?”
“I see no reason why that would be a problem. Who did you have in mind?”
“I think Maggie would very much enjoy coming with me. After all, I believe it has been a while since she has had a night out on the town as well.”
Sputtering could be heard as Maggie started to protest to the invitation. But like Minerva earlier, she was cut off by her boss. “I think that is a wonderful idea. I will let Stephen know to invite a friend.” Mrs. Bestingale came into the room and took Minerva’s hand. “I know you and Stephen will get along wonderfully Minerva and I wouldn’t force this on you if I didn’t think it would do you a world of good.”
After their boss had left the room, Maggie started to laugh uproariously. Wiping tears from her eyes, she turned to Minerva and smiled. “You were quite the spectacle. I thought I was going to die when you told Mrs. Bestingale that she should leave so you could work on our current samples. After all this time you still haven’t learned office politics very well.”
“You are not upset?”
“About the date? Hardly. I think it will be fun. Besides, it will be well worth it just to see you on a date of your very own. Mrs. Bestingale is right you know, you do need to get out more.”
Maggie dodged the piece of paper flying at her head and chuckled to herself as she got back to work. Meanwhile, Minerva found herself distracted by thoughts of her upcoming date. She hadn’t been on a date in a good six months. Not that she lacked opportunities but at this point in her life, she was more concerned about advancing her career than finding a life partner to start a family with. Sighing at the time, she realized that if she wanted to wrap things up before her forced week of exile she needed to pick up the pace.
Before she really had time to get nervous about the double blind date, a knock sounded on Minerva’s door and as she turned to look at Maggie, she took a deep breath and prayed that the night would be over soon. Opening the door, Minerva came face to face with two attractive men, one much older than the other. She never imagined that she would be dining in the company of Albus Dumbledore but assuming that he was supposed to be Maggie’s date, Minerva smiled and introduced herself and her friend.

Stephen made sure to compliment Minerva on her lovely appearance and to express how grateful he was to Mrs. Bestingale for introducing them. She could tell that he was nervous and trying extremely hard to impress her with his long list of accomplishments and achievements. But none of those things really mattered to Minerva. They never had. She was more interested in the person behind the accolades and what inspired them. At least that’s what she hoped potential suitors would find intriguing about her.
As the foursome took hold of the portkey and were whisked away to a very upscale restaurant in wizarding London, Minerva’s hand brushed against that of the other man, Albus Dumbledore, who was intended to be Maggie’s date. But as they landed abruptly on a soft patch of grass, Minerva lost her footing and immediately toppled into Albus, causing them both to crash to the wet grass.
“I’m incredibly sorry,” she started abruptly, hoping that she hadn’t hurt Albus. “I lost my footing and…” Minerva stopped when she realized that Albus was laughing as he stood up and helped her to her feet. He didn’t seem upset in the least but rather amused by the accident.
“I can’t tell you how many times that’s happened to me. I thought I was the only one who lost my bearings when using these blasted things,” he answered with a broad smile and a wink.
From that moment on, Minerva felt more at ease around the strangers. Stephen continuously tried to impress her with his money or his reputation as quite the handsome catch, but Minerva found herself more and more interested in the livelier gentleman seated to her right. Of course, she had met him before, but that was in the classroom when she had been his pupil. Dozens of girls, including her, had spent many lazy days daydreaming of him however that was before he went off to war. She couldn’t help but notice that he was still incredibly handsome and of all nights to meet him! She was saddled with someone who was more interested in telling her all about himself than in any kind of real conversation.
While Stephen focused his attention on Minerva, Albus tried unsuccessfully to engage Maggie in conversations about muggle things or jokes he had heard. While she was not completely turned off by those topics, they just weren’t her idea of interesting subjects. Minerva, on the other hand, had always been fascinated by some of the muggle contraptions and had the sense of humor to appreciate a well-told joke.
An hour into dinner, Stephen and Maggie had practically given up on trying to get a word in between Albus and Minerva. They truly seemed to connect and their conversation seemed to flow easily from one subject into another without any awkward silences or breaks. Maggie marveled at how well the two of them seemed to relate to each other and while a part of her was offended that Albus had not found her that interesting, she had to admit that they seemed better suited for each other.
Stephen, on the other hand, was not one to give up hope. While he may have lost the attention of Minerva over dinner, he assumed that once the meal was over and they moved onto the dance floor, he would once again capture the attention of the stunning raven-haired woman, who was supposed to be his date. It wasn’t until halfway through dessert that he saw the first signs of his defeat looming in the near distance.
Albus Dumbledore had a weakness for chocolate, among other sweets, and it was no surprise when he ordered the most decadent chocolate dessert the restaurant provided. Minerva, on the other hand, had never really learned to appreciate the richer sweets and was happy with a simple piece of cake or pie to top off her meal.
“Ah, but Minerva, this is absolutely sinful it’s so good. You simply must try it,” Albus insisted as he took her fork in his hand and put a small bite on it.
She watched his face break into the most warming smile she had ever seen and before she even knew what she was doing, her mouth had opened as she waited for the fork to pass her lips.
“Close your eyes, Minerva,” Albus instructed.
”What?” she asked, not really sure if she heard him correctly. It was an odd request, to say the least, and she wondered what on earth he had in mind.
“The best way to taste something for the first time is to close your eyes and focus all your senses towards that one thing.” He leaned forward in his chair just a bit and winked. “For example, you wouldn’t expect to kiss someone with your eyes wide open, now would you? You’d miss out on the wonderful sensations if you were too distracted by everything around you,” he said softly before watching her close her eyes in agreement.
As the chocolate cake exploded on her taste buds, she realized the truth behind his words. She had become so entranced by his soft voice and the mesmerizing depths of his eyes that she had completely forgotten about Maggie and Stephen, until he cleared his throat in obvious annoyance.
“Here, Minerva. Why don’t you try a bite of my cherry pie? I’m sure you’ll like it better than that chocolate cake,” Stephen said as he scooped a bit of it onto his fork and offered it to her.
“I can’t eat cherries, Stephen. I am allergic to them,” she answered absently, giving him a half-hearted apologetic smile.
“Well then, I think it’s time we finished up with dessert and headed for our next stop on the date,” Stephen suggested. He hoped to have a moment to speak to Albus in private to chastise him for his boldness and his obvious flirtation with the wrong woman. Then, once they had that sorted out properly, Stephen could, once again, begin to make the most of what was left of the evening.
To Be Continued…
Sooooo, what happens next? Well, we’re counting on you to help us decide! The most popular option is what we will write for our next chapter! In your review (and we hope you will review), just let us know which option you’d like to see and we’ll do our best to get the next chapter to you in a week’s time, using the most popular choice.
Hmmm…will:
A) Minerva overhear Stephen’s conversation with Albus about flirting with “his” girl?
OR B) Maggie and Minerva retreat to the ladies room to discuss their options for the rest of the evening?
We’re looking forward to hearing what you want to see so help us write the next chapter by telling us your thoughts! The voting will end on March 22nd and then we’ll start on the next bit! ^_^

Cool, interactive. Originally I was thinking B, but I think I'm gonna have to vote for A. I really want to see her lose her temper, and she can talk to Maggie another time!

I think I would rather see a catfight then to eavesdrop on two men. No offence but it doesn't seem like Albus would reveal himself to a potential rival and fighting over Minerva seems too premature right now. I pick B.

I will pick B. I think it is time for the ladies to retire to the powder room to discuss the gentlemen. Meanwhile, maybe we can listen in on the gentlemen's conversation too. Have our cake and eat it too.

I saw you post this idea on the general board and thought it was awesome. I was wrong. . . It soooo much better. ;D First of all, excellent story. I love the set up. I like the idea of Min and Albus getting together when they are younger, but not necessarily when she's his student. Double date where the "wrong" people end up together: classic! thank you for not over loading us with choices as to what comes next, i don't think my brain could handle it and my school work. lol. but i'm going to agree with Bogus7 and Jaya, the possibilities of Min losing her temper, especially at Stephen, too wonderful to pass up: A. love it, cat

A/N: Wow! Thanks for your overwhelming participation and support of our story. We’re so glad that you think it’s a great idea. It’s fun for us and we hope you’re enjoying it too. After tallying the votes there were 9 votes for option A and 11 votes for option B, with one person not choosing either. Sooo, we now present you with:
Discussions in the Loo!
Maggie and Minerva were told that Stephen had planned to take them to a posh nightclub that catered to the elite of the wizarding world. The establishment had been around for ages and it was extremely hard to get a foot inside the door most evenings because of its’ popularity. However, Stephen had been of some assistance to the owner a few weeks prior and as a way of thanks, the owner had promised to open the doors for Stephen and his guests at any time. Thinking that tonight was the perfect time to call in his favor, he planned to impress the group with his connections.
“If you’re all finished with dessert,” Stephen said with a bit of annoyance in his voice, “I think we should make our way to the Starlight Sky. I’m sure it will be packed with people but we’re assured admittance,” he finished with an air of confidence. He waited for some sort of squeals of glee from the ladies when he announced his plan for the evening but all he heard was the voice of his friend, the man who was paying more attention to the girl who wasn’t even his date.
“Ah, that’s a lovely choice, Stephen,” Albus interjected. “I’ve been there once or twice and while the atmosphere is lively, it also has a comfortable feel to it. It’s nothing like the other clubs in the area that accommodate the younger generations.” Albus smiled sweetly at the women, his gaze lingering more on Minerva than Maggie. “Then again, maybe our ladies would prefer the ambiance of the less restrictive clubs.” Albus’ remark earned him a giggle from Maggie and a playful slap on the arm from Minerva, causing the three of them to laugh merrily at his suggestion.
“No, I think they would prefer to be treated with more respect and dignity than to take them to a common hangout for those much younger than them.” Stephen hadn’t meant to imply that the women were old or that they were past their prime but unfortunately he could tell by Maggie’s facial expression that his words had come across as exactly that. No matter what he said or did, it was all wrong and he longed to get Minerva away so he could concentrate on making the night better for himself and for her.
Minerva’s eyebrows rose as she listened to Stephen all but categorize them as old maids and she desperately tried to fight her wave of anger that had been building within her for the last half of the evening. Part of her wondered how someone as charming as Albus Dumbledore could be friends with a man as brash and flashy as Stephen. Yet she realized that nerves were running high this evening and perhaps he was just trying too hard to impress her or maybe she was just making too much out of his actions and words. Either way, she was not about to let him get away with making such a sweeping generalization about women ‘their’ age.
“For your information, Stephen, I may look older than most women who attend those types of clubs but that does not mean that I am too old to enjoy them on occasion. I am fully capable of dining with kings and queens or having a picnic of sandwiches by a lake as I dangle my feet into the cooling waters.” Minerva offered him a smile as a way of putting him at ease after chastising him gently. “Now, I for one, would prefer to go to the Starlight Sky but I will go along with the majority of the group. Whatever you two gentlemen decide will be perfectly fine by me and I feel sure that Maggie would agree.”
Maggie looked at Minerva with eyes as big as a golden snitch! Earlier in the evening, before the men arrived, Maggie had mentioned that she hoped their dates would take them dancing. Minerva had even joked about being taken to the Starlight Sky but neither of the girls had ever dreamed it would happen tonight. And to be welcomed with a privileged status was more than they expected. “Of course I’ll agree! I’ve always wanted to go there, just to see how the upper crust socialize,” Maggie offered delightedly.
“Then it’s settled, Albus. We’ll take these two beautiful women to the most extravagant nightclub in town and dance with them until they beg for mercy,” he laughed rather loudly. “I’ll just call the waiter over for the bill and then we can be off.”
“While you’re taking care of that, I will go and powder my nose,” Minerva said softly. “Maggie, would you care to join me?” Shooting her friend a quick glare, Maggie swiftly rose from her chair and the two ladies made a discreet journey to the ladies room, leaving both men staring after them as they walked away.
As they walked through the crowded restaurant, Maggie’s eyes fell on someone she hadn’t expected to see. Their boss was dining with her husband in a nearby corner and as the girls walked past, she motioned for them to come over to their table.
“So, how is your evening with your dates?” Mrs. Bestingale asked curiously. “I wondered where young Stephen and his friend would end up taking you two and I’m happy to see that he chose such a fine establishment.”
“Yes, it’s a lovely restaurant and they’re both rather nice,” Maggie offered eagerly. “Stephen has been trying to impress Minerva all night and did you know that the man he set me up with is none other than Albus Dumbledore?”
“Albus Dumbledore! My, you are a lucky woman tonight, Maggie!” Mrs. Bestingale noticed that Minerva had not spoken a word beyond the first greeting and she could tell from her body language that Minerva was not as thrilled with the situation.
“So, Minerva, how is your evening? Are you and Stephen a match made in heaven or what?” she asked smiling proudly at her matchmaking skills.
“Or what!” Minerva snapped back without really thinking. Maggie nudged her rather forcefully in the ribs and Minerva spoke again. “He’s rather persistent and apparently quite the ladies man. He has made it a point to tell me all about his connections in the wizarding world and even tried to feed me cherries, to which I might add I am highly allergic.”
“Minerva, sometimes I think you look for reasons to stay single. I’m sure Stephen is just trying to impress you. He’s talked of nothing more than this date since I first mentioned it to him. And you should have seen his face when I told him you had agreed to go out with him.”
“He is trying desperately hard to make sure Minerva has an enjoyable evening but it seems that Albus Dumbledore doesn’t even have to try,” Maggie added as an afterthought.
“Well, this night will soon be over and we can go back to work on Monday and forget all about it. Come on Maggie. I do believe we were headed to the ladies room and then to dance the rest of the night away.”
As Minerva strode away with Maggie in tow, she ranted on about their boss. “Can you believe her nerve? As if I agreed to go on this date! If I recall correctly, the witch forced me into this date with threats.”
Minerva had not been this upset in a long time. She was stuck on a date with a man who was decidedly pompous and uptight while her friend, a very dear friend she had to remind herself, was on the arm of the most charming wizard she had ever had the pleasure of knowing. The only highlight to the evening would be the Starlight Sky. Well, that and the bite of chocolate cake. Minerva licked her lips at the memory as she pushed open the door to the ladies room.
“Wow!” Maggie’s voice practically echoed in the massive room, which was a sea of tile, marble and silk. A house elf appeared and enquired if they needed any special assistance and Minerva was quick to dismiss the poor creature.

“Minerva, there is one thing I need to mention before you continue with your rant.” That stopped Minerva in her tracks and she turned to glare at the older witch. “And that would be?” “You told Mrs. Bestingale that you would be at work on Monday. You were too busy storming off to notice but the look on her face was classic. Were you purposely trying to agitate the poor woman or did you forget?” “Forget? Oh no! I still have a week of vacation. And I was so looking forward to being back at work. Merlin save me!” Minerva walked over to a cozy looking chair and plopped down. Her shoulders had slumped in a defeated fashion. Maggie walked over and propped herself on the arm of the chair. “I know how upset you are about the events that transpired in the last few days but her intentions really are good. You can’t tell me that the entire evening has been terrible. Surely you have enjoyed yourself some.” “With that peacock of a man?” “Minerva! You may not care for Stephen but that is no reason to be so cruel. I rather fancy him myself. He has had many accomplishments in his life and he is very gentlemanly.” Minerva looked up at her friend stunned. “You fancy him? Are we talking about the same man? And with Albus Dumbledore not only at the same table but also as your date.” Maggie blushed causing Minerva to eye her even more. “I didn’t say that I didn’t like Albus. But to be honest, he isn’t really my type. And don’t look at me that way. The two of you have much more in common. And his fascination with all things muggle is a little odd.” Suddenly the two witches started to laugh. “What an odd situation to be in.” Maggie nodded her agreement to Minerva’s sentiment. “Well, perhaps I can work a little magic at the Starlight Sky and we will both end up much happier at the end of the night. But until then, please lighten up on Stephen. He is only trying to please you.” Minerva sighed. “You are right. I promise to control my temper for as long as possible. I just hope that whatever magic you work, you do it quickly.” The two witches quickly finished applying additional lipstick and adjusting their hair before heading back out of the restaurant. The gentlemen were waiting for them with their cloaks and Stephen seemed to have gotten even more serious in their absence. Minerva mentally chided herself for thinking ill of him within two seconds of seeing him. Perhaps her promise had been made too soon. The trip to the Starlight Sky was quick and with no unpleasant incidence. As they neared the front of the club, Stephen had them wait while he went to talk with the doorman. After a few minutes it was obvious that he was in a rather heated discussion and things were not going his way. “Ladies, if you will excuse me I think I shall go and offer my assistance on the matter.” Albus walked toward what appeared to be a very ugly scene between Stephen and the doorman. Snatches of conversation could be heard as Minerva and Maggie waited in what was becoming a very uncomfortable situation. “…the owner…after what I did…promise…not acceptable.” “Perhaps we should tell Stephen that we don’t mind going to another place.” Minerva looked at Maggie and nodded her head. The two witches walked up just in time to hear Stephen’s outraged comments to the doorman and Albus. “So you are telling me that two minutes ago you were so overbooked that you simply couldn’t fit me in and now that you have found out one of my companions for the evening is Albus Dumbledore there are plenty of seats available!” The doorman replied with barely disguised boredom in his voice. “Yes sir, that is exactly what I am telling you. Now if you and your lovely ladies would follow me this way…” The last comment was obviously directed at Albus and it only fueled Stephen’s outrage. He turned and practically ran straight into Minerva who was watching the scene with some amount of pleasure. “Pardon me. I didn’t realize you were there.” Minerva suddenly felt rather bad as Stephen’s face flushed with embarrassment at the scene that had just unfolded. Taking his arm she urged them to enter. “We had just walked up when the doorman bid us to enter.” ********************************************* Alright…so what happens next? We’re counting on you to tell us. Your options this time are the following: A) Albus Dumbledore runs into an old lover inside the Starlight Sky, heating things up for everyone involved. OR B) Maggie, who surprises everyone with her expert dancing skills, becomes the belle of the ball, sparking the interest of Stephen and changing the evening for everyone. The voting will end on March 29. Happy reading, reviewing and voting!

well... i voted for the other option, but this one was still very nicely done!
poor Stephen... he just doesn't realize fate is against him.
as for which option i'm voting for this time... hmm... even though i think it would be highly interesting to have one of Albus' former lovers there... i think i'll have to go with B... as i've decided that a slow buildup between Albus and Minerva would be heavenly.
so... B for me!

interesting the way things turn out. (i also voted for the other option). I think the responses and participation for this story have been great! Another, amazing chapter. hats off! poor stephen. he is getting totally shown up by Albus. It would be intersting to see how stephen reacts if Albus is taken down a notch (A). but at the same time, it would be nice to see a new character take center stage for a bit (B). oh . . . uhm. . . erm. . . which to choose. . . . how about (A,B;B, A . .. .i don't know) A, final answer Whatever the outcome of the vote, i'm sure it will be good cat
