Oops, I missed a chapter. Bad me. They were both very good, though. It's so sad that Albus and Minerva have to spend so much time apart, but I'd say they made up for it very well. The bit with Aberforth was amusing and I love Minerva's interaction with her future mother-in-law.
Hmm, I don't know which way to vote for next week. B sounds good, though.

I missed this story, and missed voting.
I love the understanding between Alianora and Minerva, I couldn't imagine a better relationship between them, it just fits, especially since Minerva is having other wedding trouble.
I love the sublte devlopments you're using with Albus and Armando, Poppy being there that kind of thing. It shows time passing really well, I think, and makes it more realistic.
Aww and the baby goat (and it takes a lot for me to mean aww at something liek that, it's not in my nature) and poor Albus, it made me laugh, bless his jealousy.
The catalogue thing was ingenius, really imaginative and I really liked it.
I like seeing it go well for them, despite the troubles they faced, the way their relationship works in this story is how I imagine it working. And comparing it to the beginning, the developments were so natural.
Anyways, this week I pick... B. Because I think they are lifelong friends, so it will be nice to see that happen.

I have no idea if I am doing this right, but here goes nothing. I am new to the board (although I have been lurking and reading for a little while) and I am so very happy to have finally caught up with story! Wow. I have been trying to put into words my feelings and Wow is about all I can say. Your characters are great. I love the interactions. In almost every situation I have been able to see myself or someone I know doing the exact same thing. I'm very impressed and I can't wait for more. Speaking of which, I choose B. I love Poppy and I can't wait for them to be friends. I'm so excited that I get to vote now! ;D Thanks for sharing your creative genius with us all! Laura

A/N: I think this is a first for us – due to the popularity of the option of Alianora helping Minerva with her wedding woes and because we like Alianora so much, we decided to include the option that didn’t win two chapters ago in this chapter. We hope you guys don’t mind – we promise not to do it again, unless you really want us to. J As for options this week, Poppy was by far the most popular with 12 votes, the option with Armando’s wife getting only 3 votes.
Celebrations
Minerva took a sip of tea and sighed into the cup. Her eyes kept wandering between the ring on her left hand and a note that was resting on the table in front of her. She had just finished going through the rest of the house with Alianora and was waiting for her to return from some errand in the attic when the owl had arrived. The familiar handwriting on the outside had her smiling fondly until she read the note inside.
“What ever is the matter Minerva?” Alianora questioned from her usual frame.
Minerva looked up, startled to find Albus’ mother looking down at her with concern in her eyes. “Oh it is nothing,” she lied not wanting to bother the witch with her problems.
“It certainly doesn’t seem like nothing,” Alianora stated wisely. “I won’t pry as it is surely none of my business but if you wish to speak on it then I am here to listen.”
Minerva smiled as a few tears gathered in her eyes. The kind words were too much and she was soon spilling the entire story of her wedding problems to her newest friend. She tried to only state the facts as she was well aware that Alianora and Pernelle were close friends but her frustration had just been building for too long. Her gestures became more pronounced and her voice had been raised at least a notch or two over the course of her explanation.
“And now I receive this note,” Minerva groaned while throwing the piece of parchment back on the table she had just picked it up from. “They want to meet within the next week to discuss some more details of my wedding. As if it is my wedding considering I have had no say in what is to happen.”
Minerva stomped her foot before throwing herself back into the chair. Her face was flushed slightly from her enthusiasm and she realized she must look quite unreasonable. With a bit of shame she raised her eyes to find Alianora looking at her with an odd expression on her face.
“I am sorry Alianora. I did not mean to berate either Pernelle or my Mother. I know they are simply excited and want what they believe is best for me. But it is my wedding and I know what I want, and it certainly is not what they have in mind.”
Alianora started to pace in her frame and Minerva grew nervous when she had still not spoken after a few minutes. Her mind kept racing over what would happen if Pernelle and her Mum found out just how ungrateful she was for their help. Surely Alianora would not share their conversation with the two maternal witches.
“If you would like my advice, I have an idea for you,” Alianora stated quietly.
Minerva snapped out of her thoughts and looked hopefully at the portrait. “Please,” she said.
“I think you should elope, well sort of.”
“But,” Minerva gasped.
“Now wait until I have finished. After all you did ask me to give you my advice.”
Minerva nodded and waited for her to continue, her mind racing with questions and denials.
“You told me that you and Albus want a small ceremony with only your close friends and family. Why not have a dinner, here if it would please you, after school has let out, and invite everyone you would want at your wedding. Once everyone has arrived they can be witnesses to your surprise wedding with a reception afterwards. You will get what you want and everyone will have no choice but to be happy for you…just be sure to have the dinner before any wedding invitations go out.”
Minerva held her tongue as she truly thought over the idea. Her first reaction had been to dismiss it entirely. There was simply no way she could pull off such an enormous surprise and Alianora obviously did not know how attached to a grand wedding Pernelle and her Mum had become.
“Mothers cannot help but be happy about their daughter’s weddings and after all, it isn’t about any of them is it. It is about you and my son and the great love you share for each other.”
“You are absolutely right and absolutely brilliant,” Minerva praised as she stood from her seat. “Thank you Alianora for pointing out the obvious. There are so many details that would need to be worked out. School will be over before we know it. You will help won’t you,” Minerva questioned as her mind whirled with all the details that would need to be worked out.
Alianora’s laughter rained down upon her and she grinned at the portrait sheepishly. “Of course I will help. But please relax as there is plenty of time to figure everything out. Now how do you feel about dancing?”
The women talked for several hours over everything from how many invitations would need to be sent out to the type of flowers Minerva would like to have. Nothing was finalized as Albus’ input would need to be solicited before the idea could truly be decided upon but Minerva had not been more excited about her upcoming wedding since the night in the forest where Albus held her in his arms, both of them encased in a swaying hammock.
~~~~~
Minerva rolled up the parchment in front of her and sealed it with a spell. She sat back and looked around the room. She had just completed her final report to the International Transfiguration Association about her successful second animagus transfiguration and the results of her overall research with Albus. Of course Albus would need to look everything over and add his signature and she would be required to spend some time in interviews with various members of the association, but for all intent and purposes she was finished.
It was odd to think that these rooms that has become a second home to her would soon be reverted back to their old abandoned state. She would miss it all, but especially her meditation area. Minerva stretched and stood before walking into the room which was shining with sunlight. She sat down upon a cushion and closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of the sun soak through to her very bones.
The last several weeks had been hectic. The wedding plans had flourished after Albus’ approval and with Alianora’s help she had made considerable progress. The secret wedding had allowed her to sit through multiple meetings with her mother and Pernelle over the grand affair they imagined with a patience she never imagined she could master. Her mother had even commented, while patting her growing belly, how agreeable she had been of late. Of course the comment had been tempered with a suspicious look but Minerva had taken it in stride and simply smiled at her as if she had not a care in the world.
The weeks past had also had her helping Albus with his Transfiguration classes. She had done everything from grading papers to teaching some of the lower years. It had eased Albus’ stresses considerably and had given her a greater love of teaching than she could have imagined. Granted, some of her forays had been less than ideal. The class where she had attempted to have some third years transfigure books into potted plants had gone rather awry. She had presumed that everyone would choose something mundane, like the small rose bush she had demonstrated. However, children’s minds are very inventive and after prying a fanged geranium off of an innocent Hufflepuff girl, she had dismissed class but not before assigning three feet on the importance of safety in transfiguration. Other than that incident and a few others which paled in comparison, she had realized she had a knack for the profession.
With Armando’s return at the beginning of the week, Minerva had placed her full attention to finishing the report for her research with Albus. Her meticulous notes throughout the whole process had made pulling together the final document relatively easy. Her biggest concern now was whether or not she was going to return early to her job at the ministry. She still had several months of leave and they were not expecting her back until the fall. Her mind played over the pros and cons constantly but in her heart she knew she would not be returning until the last possible moment. Albus had not mentioned their honeymoon much, other than he wanted to plan it entirely, but he had hinted that they would be gone for several weeks and possibly longer.
With a sigh, Minerva stood and looked around the room one more time. The sun had sunk low in the sky and she was debating on what to do. Albus had to work late with Armando to catch him up on all that had transpired while he had been in hospital under his wife’s watchful eye. Caressing the cat that hung around her neck, Minerva felt it vibrate slightly. With her mind made up, she headed out of the door and toward the grounds of Hogwarts. She could use a nice walk and a drink at The Three Broomsticks sounded like a lovely idea.
The little village was quiet as Minerva strolled leisurely from Gladrags where she had purchased Albus a new pair of socks, a little surprise gift she had only just decided to purchase on her way to Hogsmeade. And now, as she resumed her walk towards her original destination with the garish purple socks tucked in her robes, she smiled as she remembered so many entertaining hours and outings with Albus along these very same streets. Everyone knew his name and being the personable man that he is, he had managed to somehow remember their names as well, making him incredibly popular for that simple reason alone. And now, since they had been dating, Minerva was surprised at the number of witches and wizards who knew her name as well and had no hesitation about calling out a greeting to her.
“Minerva…do you have a moment?” Ambrosius Flume called from the doorway of Honeydukes. “I have created something new and I’d like my best customer to give me his opinion since it was at his request in the first place.”
Minerva smiled and deviated from her walk to willingly enter the shop. “Aren’t you supposed to be closed by this time of day? Please don’t tell me you’ve started staying open later. It’s hard enough to convince Albus that you’ve closed when it’s obviously past your posted hours. If he finds out that you’ve adopted extended hours, I fear I may have a worse time keeping him home at nights,” she joked, feeling incredibly comfortable around the friendly man and his wife.
“Have no fear, Minerva. If I allowed him to stay open any later, Hogwarts would have a bigger curfew problem, more detentions, and I’m afraid I’d see less of my husband. He works too many hours as it is, trying to keep up with the demand of sweets and confectionaries.”
“And Albus doesn’t help matters, I’m sure. I swear the man has an insatiable appetite for sweets. I like the occasional ginger newt or even lemon biscuit but if Albus gets near the end of his sherbet lemon bag, he makes sure he has a spare one nearby. It’s somewhat amusing to see him dashing about looking for his hidden stash,” Minerva giggled. “I’ve even hidden his sweets from him just to see the look on his face, knowing it was too late for him to contact you by floo for more.”
“You women are all the same…conspiring to deprive a man of his pleasures,” Ambrosius chimed in as the women laughed heartily. “I’m going to send Albus an owl first thing in the morning so he will know that my floo and doors are always open to my best customer. Honestly, without Albus’ support and his praise, I dare say I’d still be struggling to make ends meet.”
Minerva listened eagerly to Ambrosius’ story of how when he first arrived in Hogsmeade from the outskirts of London, he was met with little enthusiasm. The villagers, while warm and charming, were not thrilled with the idea of a shop which only sold sugary treats, mainly to their children. “And if it hadn’t been for Albus’ unwavering support, both financially and with his encouragement, I probably would have given up after the first year. Fortunately for me, he stood by me and believed wholeheartedly in the need for such a shop.”
“Oh I’m sure he did,” Minerva interjected with a wink. “He’s often spoke of the quality of your goods and how he’d be lost without you so near. Why sometimes I think I take second place to his precious sweets.”
The kind shop owner shared a knowing look with is wife before attempting to answer her remark. “We know for a fact that what you’ve just said isn’t the case. In fact, I called you in here so you’d share this with Albus,” he said handing her a small package, wrapped neatly in white paper with a purple bow.
“You said it was something new…some new creation. Might I ask what I’m carrying back to Albus?” Minerva had to admit that her curiosity was getting the better of her since obviously the witch and wizard knew more than they were sharing. “He didn’t mention that you were making something special for him, though he didn’t know I was coming into town either. I’m sure he’d have given me a shopping list at least one roll of parchment long if he knew I’d be in town before you closed.”
“All the better for business,” he joked. “Seriously, I thought he’d told you of his idea but apparently not.” Ambrosius had the good manner to look thoroughly apologetic at having ruined the surprise.
“Tell Albus we’re truly sorry. We thought since it was for you, he would have mentioned it at least in passing. At the very least, he should have said you didn’t have any knowledge of the idea.”
“Honestly, it doesn’t matter. I’m sure it merely slipped his mind. But I’ll be sure to pass along your regrets and thank you for going to so much trouble for him. He really does appreciate it.” After several more minutes spent in enjoyable conversation, Minerva made her way to The Three Broomsticks.
As soon as she entered the pub, Minerva fully understood why most of the shops were closed. All the owners were in Madame Rosmerta’s, giving her business an evening boost. Seeing no open tables after a brief scan of the room, Minerva was just about to leave when she heard a familiar voice calling to her over the roar of the patrons.
“Miss McGonagall…Minerva…over here.” Minerva whirled around to see the familiar face of Poppy Pomfrey as the young woman crossed the room to her side. “I saw you enter but thought you might be meeting someone.”
“No, I thought I deserved a break and a reward from all my work on the research paper and my feet led me here. Are you alone?”
A sadness filled Poppy’s eyes as she nodded her head. “Alastor, the man I’m currently dating, was supposed to meet me here over an hour ago but so far there’s been no sign of him.”
“Oh that’s horrible. Is he usually late or this forgetful?” she dared to ask, though not truly meaning to pry into the other witch’s personal affairs.
“I’m sure he has a good excuse. He works for the Ministry and sometimes they can be a bit…”
“Demanding, rude, abrupt…say no more. Dating Albus and also working for them myself, I’ve learned that where the Ministry is concerned, it’s best to say very little. I’m not in the habit of using many foul words and those in power at the Ministry tend to bring those to the surface far too easily for me.”
Poppy smiled and looked back to her table, still abandoned, then back to Minerva. “Would you care to join me then? It would give us a chance to get to know one another and I could use the company.”
“I’d like that very much but only if you’ll let me buy you a drink. I think I owe you that much for scaring the wits out of you in the forest that day. I was so excited and Albus was supposed to be right back…well you remember.”
“Yes I do. It gave me quite a fright but I’m very happy for you. I was never very good at transfiguration so to be able to become a double animagus. My specialty was in the healing arts, guess that’s why I chose to become a mediwitch.”
Round after round of drinks, the women chatted away the hours of the evening. Several handsome wizards had offered to buy them drinks or had invited them to their table, but each was politely declined. And the more drinks that were consumed, the easier it became to loosen up and share small stories or experiences of their lives.
“How long have you and Alastor been an item?” Minerva asked curiously.
“We’ve known each other for nearly five years but only dated for the last year and a half. He’s always been a bit standoffish and it took me that long to catch his eye.” Poppy took another long sip of her butterbeer and ordered another round for their table. “And what about you and Albus? You seem to have hit it off rather quickly and with a flourish as well,” she joked with raised eyebrows.
“I met him on a blind date…best and worst date of my life, actually. My friend ended up with my date and I ended up with Albus. We’ve been together ever since.” Minerva blushed as Poppy gave her a knowing wink.
“And I bet he treats you wonderfully. I can tell just by the way you two were acting when I first bumped into you. You seem made for each other and that’s rare to find someone like that these days. I’m very lucky to have Alastor…when he’s around.”
Minerva found herself feeling rather sympathetic towards the abandoned woman and wondered if she too would face the same fate one day. “Tell you what…we’ve had enough liquid dinner for one night. Let’s go back to the school and you can have dinner with us. Albus should be done with his meeting with Armando and we’d enjoy your company.”
“But what about Alastor? If he comes here looking for me…”
“We’ll send him an owl once we get back to Hogwarts and if he starts to get upset with you, which I highly doubt, we’ll let Albus deal with him,” she giggled, starting to feel the effects of a few too many butterbeers.
“Are you sure Albus won’t mind? I mean, if you two haven’t seen each other much today, he might want some time with you.” Poppy knew how she would feel about a third party interrupting her special time with Alastor but honestly she wasn’t keen on spending the evening alone either.
“You let me deal with Albus Dumbledore. I’ve got him wrapped around this fittle linger…little finger,” she hurriedly corrected herself as she shook her head and blushed. “He won’t mind one bit…trust me.”
After paying their bill and pushing their way through the crowded room, Poppy and Minerva made their way back to the safety of Hogwarts and up to Albus’ chambers. Without knocking first, Minerva entered the rooms with a smile, Poppy following closely behind.
“Ah, there’s the loveliest witch alive,” Albus called out from the balcony in a deep, desire laden voice. “How about you join me out here for a romantic dinner for two,” he added as he moved to stand in the doorway wearing nothing but a pair of purple shorts, a rose tucked loosely behind his ear and an inviting smile curled upon his lips.
Minerva was overcome with a fit of the giggles as Poppy gasped and quickly turned her back to the half naked man standing in front of her. “Umm, perhaps this wasn’t such a good idea, Minerva. I’ll take a rain check on the dinner, if it’s all the same to you.” She started for the door but was stopped by Minerva’s hand on her shoulder.
“No, just let me have a word with Albus and everything will be fine. Have a seat and a firewhisky or another butterbeer and we will be right back. I promise.” Minerva made sure Poppy wasn’t going anywhere then walked quickly to an embarrassed Albus who was sitting alone on the balcony.
Minerva could tell by the coloring of his cheeks he was embarrassed, even by the dim light of the stars. Without saying a word, she slipped into his lap and wound her arms around his neck. Her fingers danced lightly around the base of his head, forcing him to look up and into her eyes. She smiled sweetly at him then lowered her lips to his, wasting no time in deepening the kiss. Her tongue sensually stroked his as she held his body close to her own. When the kiss ended, she rested her head on his bare shoulder.
“I didn’t know you were planning something or I would have been home earlier and very much alone. But I met Poppy in Hogsmeade when I went to The Three Broomsticks for a drink and well she was being stood up by her date. Alastor, I believe she said was his name.”
A look of surprise flashed across Albus’ face. “Alastor Moody? He’s an old friend of mine. I can’t believe the cad has a girlfriend and hasn’t mentioned it. He works in the Auror department and he’s rather good at what he does. You wait until I see him. I’ll give him a proper dressing down for leaving Miss Pomfrey to her own devices.”
“That won’t be necessary. She fully understands his role at the Ministry, though she’s agrees with me that they’re far to demanding at times and they aren’t the most patient lot to deal with in any circumstances.” Minerva gave Albus’ a pouty look and cradled his cheek in her hand. “I felt sorry for her though. I kept thinking that she could be me one day as I’m waiting for you to arrive only to have you detained by the Ministry or Hogwarts…or both.”
Albus leaned in and kissed her quickly. “Let’s not keep our guest waiting. She’s done enough of that for one night. But I hope to have some time with you all to myself later,” he whispered against her ear before nipping playfully at it.
“I think that can be arranged and thank you. I’ll make sure to save an extra dessert for you later…oh speaking of…Ambrosius at Honeydukes stopped me in town. He gave me this to give to you.” Minerva rifled through her pockets and placed the small package in Albus’ hand with a curious look. “Care to explain this to me?”
Albus was surprised to see the tiny parcel in his hand but he knew he had to explain. “The long story made short is that I contacted him and his wife to see if they could create a new confectionary or type of fudge for a special occasion. I wanted us to give it to our guests on our wedding day but I wanted it to be a surprise until I knew whether or not he was successful. Judging from the sweet aroma coming from the box, I’d say he’s outdone himself.”
Minerva threw her arms around Albus and kissed him hard on the lips once more. “You are the most wonderful man alive and I’m very lucky you’re all mine.”
He laughed and began transfiguring his skimpy attire into more suitable clothing to be worn in front of a guest. “We can discuss that later but for now, I suggest we get out there and make Poppy feel welcome.”
As they entered the sitting room, they found only a small bit of parchment on the settee with a half filled glass of firewhisky.
Alastor flooed after Rosmerta told him I left with Minerva. He’s finished with work and we’re going to London to a late dinner and dancing. Minerva, thank you for everything and I would like to get together with you this weekend for lunch. I’d like to repay you for your kindness and continue our little chat…when we’re both a little more sober.
Thanks again, Poppy
Minerva looked at Albus then back at the parchment. Tossing it carelessly onto the settee, she removed her outer robes then one by one began unfastening the buttons to her shirt while kicking off her shoes. “I believe you were saying something about a romantic dinner for two,” she winked. Before Albus could answer, Minerva had her wand drawn and with a single spell, she had her lover standing before her as naked as the day he was born. “Now, how about we start with dessert and work out way backwards,” she purred as she turned her wand towards her own body and repeated the spell, ridding herself of her attire and slipping easily into Albus’ waiting arms.
Options:
A) Minerva decides she needs to go dress shopping. Can she keep her upcoming surprise wedding a secret from Pernelle and Athena as they encourage her toward grander dresses than what she would prefer?
B) Aberforth moves out of the manor and invites Albus and Minerva to his new pub for dinner. What could possibly go wrong with such simple plans?
Voting for this chapter will end on July 25.
In case some of you were wondering, we are heading towards the end of this story. It is still a few chapters off, though we are not sure how many as there is no outline since you guys are the ones guiding us as we go. We hope all of you have enjoyed reading along and will stick with us until the end.
Purple shorts, a rose behind his ear, and an inviting smile, now there is an interesting picture of Albus.
Glad Minerva and Poppy are getting to know one another better.
I vote for [glow=red,2,300]A[/glow] this time because I think Minerva is basically honest, and it is going to really be hard for her to keep this secret from her mother and Pernelle (who are both somewhat nosy and are going to sniff out that she has a secret). Hmmmmm, will she crack or not?
As always, I love this story and am sorry that it is coming to an end.
I missed the deadline being on holiday and all but I'll review anyway. End?! I'm just going to pretend that you never said that. But seriously it's been a wonderful read and I'll just have to re-read *siaghs dramatically* It's a good job it's the holidays. I loved the bit when Minerva and Poppy came home, I laughed so much. Poor Albus I'd have just died of embarrassment. I really enjoyed seeing Poppy and Minerva becoming friends. And I am intrigued to what Albus' little gift from Minerva was And the fudge was so cute. And I love fudge so it's all good. I would have voted A. Update soon.
Wow. It's a bloody good job it's holidays or I'd never have read this story. Having only joined recently and just caught up on reading this story, may I say thank you so much for writing it? I love the story and the voting is a fun twist. It's interesting to see how you develop the story and the characterisation is wonderful. As I have missed the deadline I won't vote, I just wanted to show my appreciation for a fabulous story. Thanks!
A/N: We apologize for the lengthy delay but we were a little sidetracked lately. Anyway, this time there were 9 votes for A and 4 for B and we really do appreciate those of you who read and voted, not just in this chapter but all the others as well. With that thought in mind, we are announcing that there are only two chapters left and this will be the last set of options for voting. The winner of this round of voting will be included in either the upcoming chapter or the last one, depending on how we can work it into the remaining plot. And without any further delay we give you:
Final Preparations
Twinkling blue eyes watched the dark haired witch as she struggled to keep her mind on the book she was attempting to read. He noticed that she hadn’t turned a page in quite some time and he could see the lines in her brow which perfectly matched the long sighs coming from her lips. He had finished the last of his grading some time ago and had planned on luring her towards the chessboard but more pressing matters seemed to be weighing on her mind.
“Minerva, would you care to tell me what’s bothering you?” His voice was soft and there was no mistaking the hint of curiosity in his tone. Instantly she knew there was no sense in her trying to deny that there was indeed something troubling her and it might help if she shared her thoughts with the only other person who had a chance of understanding.
She closed her book and set it aside on the nearby table, drawing her feet beneath her and running her hand through her long hair. “It’s nothing really. I’m making more out of this than I should but I just can’t help myself. I’m their only daughter, you see, and Pernelle thinks of you as a son. I’m not being fair with them but they don’t exactly make it easy for me to cooperate.”
Albus took a seat beside Minerva and drew her legs across his lap. Simultaneously he conjured a cup of her favorite tea then stared into her eyes. “Drink this and then start from the beginning. I’m afraid I’m not following you entirely.” Taking a sip and letting it slide down her throat, Minerva closed her eyes and relished the warmth and organizing her thoughts.
“The wedding…our surprise wedding to be more accurate. I have had this nagging feeling for the past few days and I can’t seem to shake it. I feel like I’m depriving two wonderful women in my life the chance to help me plan my wedding day but I know they don’t have the same vision of it that we do. I want my mother to be a part of my plans but they make it so hard, Albus. They get so carried away that they completely ignore what we want and it’s so frustrating. I’m tired of coming home in tears or dreading the next time one of them mentions the happy day,” she spat sarcastically as if imitating one or both of the older women.
“I’m sure they only mean well and I know their hearts are in the right place, but I do see the anguish in your eyes when you return home.” He paused for a moment and chose his words carefully. “Would you like to amend our original plans and perhaps do a more elaborate wedding? I know we discussed what would make us both happy but I hate seeing you like this. I’m willing to compromise…do anything you want as long as you are happy.”
Minerva reached out and stroked his face tenderly then closed the distance between them, brushing her lips across his. “Just when I didn’t think I could love you more, you say something so sweet and so sacrificing that I fall even deeper in love with you.” She shifted her body so that she was curled up safely in his arms. Her nimble fingers threaded absently through his beard as she had done on countless other nights to lull herself to sleep. “I love our plans and I don’t want to change one thing about them. Your mother was right. This is our day and we should focus on how we want things, not how my mother or Pernelle envision the day.”
Silence reigned for several long moments as they stared into the fire, each lost in thoughts and feelings until Albus had an idea. “Have you purchased your wedding dress yet?” Minerva shook her head no and firmly reminded him that he was not allowed to see it even if she had. “I wasn’t asking to see it, my dear. I was thinking that perhaps you could take your mother and Pernelle, if you’d like, and the three of you could go shopping for your dress. That might lessen their attacks on the actual plans while giving them something else to do. And it might be fun for the three of you to go dress shopping.” He was surprised when Minerva quickly turned her head upwards to his, as if she were about to scold him for making a foolish suggestion. He quickly began forming rational arguments in his mind to combat any outburst she may be about to unleash.
Minerva pondered the idea for a moment. On the whole it wasn’t a bad idea at all. If she could divert their attention towards her dress, it might give her and Alianora time to plan the wedding dinner and remain in control of her emotions. “Albus Dumbledore…you are a brilliant man and I love you! I think that is an excellent idea and I need to go dress shopping anyway. I think I’ll send them an owl right now and invite them on an outing Saturday.”
Minerva started to get up from the sofa but was pulled back down into Albus’ lap. “Don’t you think a brilliant idea like that deserves a reward?” he asked as his eyebrows wiggled mischievously above darkening eyes. “I might even be persuaded to come up with a few more helpful ideas if I’m compensated for my efforts.” As he was talking, his hand traveled up to the collar of her robe and one by one he began unfastening the buttons that would lead to her soft skin hidden beneath. For now the owls could wait as could any further talk of wedding plans or dresses.
It was with a hint of dread that Minerva opened her eyes early on Saturday morning. In some respects she was looking forward to finding the perfect dress. However, she also knew that her persistent mother and Pernelle would most likely force her to try on dresses which held no appeal for her at all. But there was hope. While she was shopping for a dress, Alianora had promised to create a simple invitation to the dinner party, which Albus and Minerva would approve before sending to their guests. And that would put them one step closer to the wedding of their dreams instead of the outlandish one being suggested for them.
Albus, being the lovely and well connected man that he is, arranged for Minerva and her guests to have the most exclusive wizarding bridal shop in London all to themselves. He knew the owner from his days at Hogwarts and the she could be trusted with their secret, something he certainly couldn’t say about many of the shop owners in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley.
“And don’t worry. Augusta can be trusted completely to keep the secret and she most certainly won’t let me even peek at the dress you choose. She’s very old fashioned that way. I think it must have something to do with her Victorian upbringing,” he joked.
“Might I remind you that you were born and grew up during that same time period, love? But somewhere along the way you seemed to have lost some of those more restrictive ways of thinking and doing things,” she added with a wink.
“That’s something we can both be thankful for. While I retain my charm and gentlemanly ways, I also learned how to take care of a woman’s needs and how to keep her coming back for more. You see you are addicted to me now so there’s no use in denying it. You are destined to want me for as long as we both live.” His face took on an image of smugness though it was merely for show and she knew it.
“Is that right? Just remember that this street runs both ways. I seem to remember more than one occasion when you were the one initiating some rather adventurous activities in some rather public places, though I would be the last person to complain. You do know how to keep my cauldron simmering on the brink of boiling over. I hope you feel the same way,” she purred as her lips neared his ear and her leg draped across his seductively.
“Ahh, indeed I do,” he moaned softly, “but if you don’t stop this teasing and taunting, you may find that we have some rather unwelcome visitors in our rooms wondering about your delay. You’re supposed to meet them in an hour and I certainly do not wish to be blamed for keeping both those women waiting. I need to keep them both on my favorable side,” he laughed before pressing her back into the bedding for a very heated kiss.
When the kiss ended, he pulled back and smiled down into her face. Her cheeks were still slightly flushed and her hair was slightly disheveled from both sleep and his hands but she looked absolutely ravishing to him. “Now, if you don’t get up this instant, I’ll be forced to tell them all how you tied me to the bed and refused to let me go until I had totally exhausted us both.”
Minerva burst into a fit of the giggles. “And would that be such a bad idea? You know I’ve always heard that the more powerful the witch and wizard, the more stamina they actually have. Perhaps we should push ourselves so we’ll know our limits.” She was purring now, something which always excited him but in reality she knew that they didn’t have time for any morning antics. He was right and she was on a very strict schedule this morning. “Maybe this weekend we can see about testing those old myths to see just how true they are.”
Augusta was absolutely thrilled to open her shop for Minerva, Athena and Pernelle. When Albus had first owled her about it, she was completely stunned. Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine the famous bachelor, Albus Dumbledore, getting married but apparently this woman was something special. And having known Albus for as long as she did, there was no mistaking that Minerva must be a special woman. She went into the shop an hour early to make sure everything was in order and that she could be there to greet her guests as soon as they arrived.
“I know it’s not the shop you mentioned, Mum, but this is a friend of Albus’ and can be trusted. And from what he’s told me, her shop is one of the most exclusive in all of London for bridal witches. If I don’t find something here, then we can go to the shop you and Pernelle mentioned.” Minerva’s tone of voice and demeanor were firm, letting both women know that while she appreciated their suggestion, this was where they were shopping.
“Fair enough,” Pernelle agreed. “I have heard wonderful things about this place. Your mother and I had already been scouting the bridal shops, looking for dresses for you, and we’d found a few that we wanted you to try. Maybe this lady while have a similar style and we can decide on whether or not to visit the other places.”
“You two have already been dress shopping…without me?” Minerva gasped. “When, pray tell, did you find the time to do that? Mum, you should be concentrating on baby things and the nursery, not finding a dress for my wedding.”
“It was no trouble at all. Pernelle and I were shopping for the baby and saw a beautiful full length gown in the shop window. The dress itself made of white satin and had tiny beads sewn into the bodice and the veil was stunning. Oh Minerva you have to at least stop by and try it on for us. It would be the perfect dress and I can actually see you walking down the aisle on your father’s arm with all of our guests being awed when you enter the room. It will be breathtaking!”
Minerva inwardly grimaced as her mother went on to describe the dress and how she envisioned the wedding day. And to make matters worse, Pernelle seemed to agree wholeheartedly with her mother, making it especially hard to battle both women on even the minor issues. She was never more thankful to see Augusta’s shop open and as soon as she entered, Minerva tensed. Athena and Pernelle had bid the woman a good morning then set out to inspect every wedding dress in the shop, leaving Minerva to speak quietly with the accommodating woman.
“Don’t worry, dearie. Albus told me some of your dilemma and I’m here to help YOU. It’s your day and I’m sure you know best what you’d like. While I won’t interfere, I want you to be happy so let me first ask a few questions…to get an idea of what you’re looking for in a dress.”
The dress Minerva described was simple but would make any bride proud. “I want it to be an off white, a muted sort of color I suppose. And while I want it to be floor length, I don’t want the large skirt like many of the bridal dresses have. They are much too garish for me. I’d like it to have an empire waist but a neckline that shows just the right amount of cleavage.”
“And does it have any beading or embroidery? How about the veil and overrobe?” Augusta was busy taking notes, trying her best to catch every detail of Minerva’s description of the perfect dress.
“Around the bottom and edges of the sleeves, I’d like a trace of gold embroidery, nothing fancy, just an uncomplicated design. And the overrobe…that’s the best part of the dress. When I close my eyes, I can see this crème colored robe with gold embroidery all over the fabric. It’s not too much but just the right amount and the sleeve flair out at the end. The collar is high and meets my hairline at the back of my neck. I plan to wear my hair up so that would make it perfect.”
The entire time Minerva was speaking, her eyes had been closed and Augusta couldn’t help but notice how relaxed Minerva had grown. Even her tone of voice no longer held that edginess to it but instead it had taken on a wistful nature about it.
“Can you give me a little time on this? I may have something like what you want but I will need to make a few modifications to it so that it will meet all of your criteria. While I’m working in the back, feel free to try on any of the dresses here. But remember, this is about what you would like, no one else. Understood?”
Minerva gratefully nodded her head and made a note to send this woman a note of thanks as well as a box of the best blend of tea she could find. Already she had made the outing a productive one, but her revelry was short lived. As soon as the woman disappeared into a back room, Athena and Pernelle descended upon her, each struggling to carry dresses of all different styles and sizes.
“Don’t just sit there Minerva! You need to get into a changing room and start disrobing. You can’t try these on if you’re chatting away with the owner.” Athena smiled and motioned toward the empty changing room off to the side, behind a wall of mirrors used for the bride’s inspection of the gown from every angle. “While you were making small talk, we found these to start with. They’re not as pretty as the one we saw in the other place but they’ll do for now.”
“Yes and if you find something you like here, I’m sure she will hold them for you while we dash across town so you can at least look at the one we saw. After that, you’ll be able to make the best decision on what you really want.”
Minerva was finding it hard to hold her tongue but she tried to remain pleasant and focused on what both Albus and Augusta had told her. Even Alianora’s words began ringing in her ears after she was forced to try on her third gown of the morning. It wasn’t that the gowns were ugly or out of style, quite the contrary. But they were not what Minerva wanted when her heart was firmly set on the dress she envisioned in her mind.
“Minerva, what’s wrong? You’ve tried on all these dresses and still you are unhappy. That last one I thought would win your heart for sure.” Athena leaned close to her daughter’s ear and whispered so softly that only Minerva could hear. “If you don’t like any of this woman’s dresses, we don’t have to buy anything from her. You’re not obligated just because Albus arranged it and she’s an old friend of his.”
Minerva whirled around to face both women. Her mouth was drawn into a thin line and her hands were shaking. She had finally reached her wits end and it was time to stop the madness. “Mother, Pernelle, I appreciate your help but you don’t seem to understand. I…”
“Oooooh!” Athena cried out as she grabbed her protruding stomach and made her way to the nearby chair. “The baby…it just kicked me for the first time. Here…put your hand here, Minerva. I want you to feel this.”
Minerva suddenly felt her anger dissipate as she placed her hand on her mother’s stomach. “Strong little one, isn’t he…or she,” she added with a smile. “I think maybe they’re trying to tell you they’ve had enough excitement for one day. I think I’ve had enough shopping too. Let’s get a bite of lunch and then go home. I’m sure Dad would like to feel the baby kicking too.”
“By Merlin’s wand…Minerva look!” Pernelle’s mouth was gaping open as she pointed towards the back of the store. Augusta was standing beside a dress none of the women had seen in their perusal of the numerous dresses. “It’s…it’s…”
“Perfect,” was Minerva soft reply. Warm tears began to spring into her eyes as Augusta skillfully levitated the dress closer and closer to the women. She closed her eyes and tried to secretly wipe away the tears before they had a chance to fall down her cheeks. The images flashing in her mind looked exactly like the dress she saw when she opened her eyes once more. Forgetting all about her sibling’s latest development and her shopping companions, Minerva walked slowly towards the satiny vision.
“Is this something like what you wanted?” Augusta spoke softly, as if she was afraid to break some sort of spell between Minerva and the dress. “I listened to how you described the dress and this was what I saw in my mind. A few modifications to a dress I’d been holding for ages and this is the result.”
“May…may I please try it on?” Shaking fingers ran reverently down the bodice of the dress then down the sleeves. To Minerva, it was like reaching out and touching a dream…her dream.
“Of course. Please…be my guest.” Augusta handed Minerva the dress then stepped back. “I’ll be just over here should you need me.”
“No, please…stay. I’d like your opinion as well.” Minerva turned to see her mother smiling. “Can you wait a bit on that lunch? I think I have one more dress to try on before we leave.”
As soon as Minerva emerged from the dressing room and stood in front of the mirrors, she was in love with the dress. Everything about it was perfect, even the size. For several moments, she twirled around in front of the mirrors, noting the way it flowed and swayed with each of her subtle movements.
“Mother? Pernelle, Augusta? What do you think?”
Athena rose from the chair and hugged her daughter tightly then pressed a kiss to her cheeks. “I think I’ve never seen a more beautiful or radiant bride. Albus will have trouble keeping himself in check once he sees you in this gown. Let’s hope he can make it to the honeymoon,” she laughed as her daughter and friend blushed.
“Mother!” Minerva scolded before laughing herself. “Pernelle, do you have an opinion on the dress?”
“I’m glad we came here first instead of forcing you to go to the other place. This is, without a doubt, the dress for you. You two compliment each other and I’ve never seen you so happy.”
With the dress carefully boxed and paid for, the three women thanked Augusta and promised to be back for more of their formal wear needs.
“Wait for me outside, please. I forgot something.” Minerva turned and went back into the shop.
“Did you forget something, Minerva?” Augusta was a bit puzzled to see Minerva returning so quickly after having just left.
In two long strides Minerva had reached the older woman and pulled her into a fierce hug, something quite unusual for her after having only met someone a few hours prior. “Thank you so much. When I woke this morning I was literally dreading this little excursion with my mother and Pernelle. But you made it all worthwhile. You helped me find the perfect dress, the one I’ve dreamed of since I was a little girl and for that I will be forever indebted to you.”
“All you needed was someone to listen to you. That’s all I did. I mean no disrespect to your mother or Mrs. Flamel, but they were thinking of what they would like, not necessarily you. And to be honest, Albus did mention that they might try to pressure you into something you weren’t happy with entirely. He asked me to take good care of you first and foremost and that above all else, not let them push you too hard.”
“Thank you all the same. I will be sure to thank Albus too as soon as I get home. And I have a feeling I’ll be seeing a lot more of you in the future. I noticed a few other pieces of attire that I’d like to examine further, but I won’t do that today. There are some things a mother doesn’t need to see,” she winked as she nodded her head in the direction of the lingerie portion of the store.
“You’re welcome here anytime and if I can do anything else for you, do not hesitate to ask.”
The weekend after her successful dress shopping excursion found Minerva at Dumbledore Manor going over the completed invitations which she had picked up the day before. She had arrived with Albus and gone straight to Alianora’s portrait but unfortunately her co-conspirator was not in attendance. To help pass the time until she showed up, Minerva badgered Albus to take out the final list of guests who were to be invited and asked him to look over everything one more time, just in case. “All the addresses are correct,” Albus said in an exasperated manner. “I have looked them over at least four separate times before and even if I am wrong, the owls will know where to go.”
“Yes, but I don’t want someone receiving an invitation that has been made out to the wrong address.”
Albus shook his head and picked up the list. He knew there would be no arguing with her. “You added Poppy?” he questioned, surprise evident in his tone.
“We have become friends of late and she already knows of us,” Minerva reasoned.
“I wasn’t judging,” he said quickly. “I’m pleased you added her. I would have thought the two of you have been friends since childhood the way you carry on if I hadn’t known otherwise.”
Minerva smiled as she thought about her newest friend. However, her attention was drawn back to the invitations when a new voice piped up in the room.
“They’re perfect,” Alianora exclaimed as she looked down from her portrait and studied an invitation which was on the table below her.
Minerva’s smile grew wider at the praise as she hurried over to stand in front of the older witch. “They really did turn out well.”
“Exactly as you described to me,” Albus added from where he stood across the room, still studying the list.
The invitations were a creamy white with a picture of the Dumbledore Estate inset in the center with Albus and Minerva standing together on the front steps. Smiling out from the card, and with an occasional glance at each other, they bid the recipient welcome. An occasional breeze would blow across the scene, causing Minerva to smooth away errant strands of hair from her face.
When the card was opened, simple purple calligraphy invited the reader to come to a dinner in honor of the happy couple’s new home together. The accepts and regrets were listed at the bottom and all one had to do was tap the appropriate reply with their wand and it would immediately appear on a piece of parchment the stationary company had given Minerva.
“You don’t think anyone will suspect do you?” Minerva looked at her fellow conspirators with a worried look.
“You have nothing to worry about,” Alianora assured the nervous witch.
“You don’t think our clothing will give anything away?” she asked as she looked again at the invitation.
“I told you when you had the picture taken that you needn’t worry. The dress is beautiful and completely compliments your style and natural grace without being so formal as to invite questions.”
Minerva sighed with relief and resumed her happy smile. She laid her head back on Albus’ chest as he came from behind and put his arms around her waist. The list he had been perusing caught her attention and she saw Aberforth’s name just where the paper curled around his hand.
“Did you find out if Aberforth is staying at the Hog’s Head yet?” Minerva enquired.
“I meant to tell you yesterday. He now has rooms above the bar and has started to take over some of the responsibilities. He wished you well and told me to invite you for a visit. So to answer your question, yes the address – all the addresses – are correct.” Albus leaned down and kissed her neck. “Now, if you two can do without me, I told Father I would meet him in the study.”
“Off with you then,” Alianora said. “We will handle getting the parchment addressed and delivered.”
Albus gave Minerva one last kiss and then headed for the doorway. “Enjoy yourselves,” he teased with twinkling eyes.
Minerva smiled at his retreating form before turning back to Alianora. “The guest list is complete so I just need to transfer the addresses to the envelopes. Did the owls arrive that we hired?”
“Yes. They are now roosting in the back awaiting instructions. The flurry arrived this morning making quite the ruckus before finally settling down. Now, are you going to tell me who is on the list?”
“It was never a secret,” Minerva teased. “Besides you helped put it together.”
“True,” Alianora granted.
Minerva held the list toward her picture as she recited it from memory. “There are my parents, the Flamels and Aberforth, of course. We also invited Stephen and Maggie; they are the couple that went with us on the blind date. Headmaster Dippet and his wife are on there as you and Albus suggested. Rubeus Hagrid is the assistant groundskeeper who Albus is fond of. And I invited a new friend, Poppy. I believe I have mentioned her a time or two. And then of course this is Xiomara Hooch, my best friend since childhood.”
Alianora looked up from the list just as Minerva finished speaking. “Are you excited?”
“Nervous as it grows so close,” Minerva confided. “Not about the wedding but about the reactions of everyone when they realize why they were truly invited.”
“I think you will be pleasantly surprised by their response. Now, let’s get these finished so the owls can do their jobs.”
As the witches completed the invitations, Albus had made his way to the study. “I was wondering when you would be freed from the planning.”
Albus laughed, “You know I don’t mind, just as you never minded helping Mother.”
“True enough,” Adamus said with a grin on his face.
Albus took a seat as his father put the book down that he had been reading. They regarded each other silently for a few minutes before the man, who looked younger than his son, started to speak. “I know you are years older than I ever was but I do have more experience in marriage and therefore want to share a bit of advice.”
Albus’ eyes twinkled at the serious tone of his father’s voice. He had not heard him use it for years and it brought back many memories. “Your advice will always be welcome no matter my years.”
His father’s eyes softened and his posture relaxed. “Your mother and I were lucky. We hardly ever fought, our love seemed to come so naturally. However, that doesn’t mean we didn’t have to work on it. I can tell that your relationship with Minerva is similar. My father passed along three pieces of advice which I will share with you. They stood me in good stead and I hope they do the same for you. The first is to never, under any circumstances, take Minerva for granted. The second is to respect her thoughts and wishes. That does not mean that you have to agree, only that you have to take the time to truly appreciate her points. The third is to be aware of the little things – like taking walks together, holding hands, leaving little messages, sharing secrets in the dark of night before falling asleep. These are the sort of things that often fall to the wayside in a marriage first and they can make all the difference when going through a rough time.”
“Grandfather was a wise man,” Albus stated.
“He had his moments,” Adamus said with a smile.
The two men laughed, thinking of the wizard who was a bit crazy at times. “Thank you,” Albus stated quietly.
“You’re very welcome. As you made me wait so many years to offer it, I hope you take it most seriously.”
The two men laughed again and when they had quieted Albus took the moment to change the subject. “So where were you earlier today?”
His father paused and looked hesitant. “I suppose it is time one of us told you.”
“Told me what?” Albus asked curiously.
“Your mother and I have had portraits set up in another home.”
“What?” Albus asked in a loud voice. “Surely you don’t mean to leave here?”
“No, no, this will always be our home. But we thought that with you and Minerva being in residence more often, you may like a bit of privacy without your parents hanging around constantly. One of her family’s summer homes had the extra space so Aberforth helped us with arrangements.”
Albus was shocked and flattered. It was kind of his parents to take their feelings and new marriage into consideration. “I am sure Minerva would not wish you to go to such measures but I appreciate the thought behind it. Just know that you are always welcome, whether Minerva and I are in residence or not. I don’t spend nearly enough time with you as it is.”
Albus and his father spoke for another half hour before it was time to head back to the school. “I have to leave but I will come by before the end of term to help with more planning. I hope you will be around.”
“I am sure I will be. We don’t plan on leaving until after the wedding.”
“Of course,” Albus said with a grin.
He made his goodbye quick and found Minerva and his mother still chattering. His goodbye to his mother took longer but he soon had his lioness in his arms just outside of the home.
“Do you think it will be as lovely as we envisioned,” Minerva whispered as she looked toward the house.
“As long as you are there, it will be more than I ever imagined.” With his whispered response, the two disapparted back to the gates of Hogwarts.
Options for this week are:
A. Albus arrives at the estate with the wedding cake but unbeknownst to him, Abner (Minerva's friendly goat) is in the house and decides to have a mid morning snack forcing them to go with other plans for dessert. B. Nicholas and Pernelle bring an unusual but very intriguing gift as a housewarming present, delighting Minerva and giving Albus even more romantic ideas.
Voting will end on September 5, 2006.
I'm going with B.
Min's dress sounds beautiful.
I'm actually looking forward to the end, just to see how it all turns out.
Good Luck with it.
