ok, me and my friend, Diana, were arguing about this and I wanted to know what you guys think. Do you think Dame Maggie Smith ever got plastic surgery?

I don't think she has. She looks pretty natural for a woman her age. Plus when you look at pictures of her when she was younger vs. now she looks pretty much the same, just aged a bit, which I'm glad for.
I have nothing against fixing what you don't like, but when you take it to Cher levels to make yourself look 30 when you're well past 60...it's just ridiculous.

I didn't think she got it either. Like you said shes looked the same throughout her life. And Cher took it too far and now she looks bad in my opinion

No, my friend is a Maggie Smith nut (I know a lot of you are saying 'so am I' but trust me you have nothing, nothing at all on this girl) and she a) blew up at me for even asking and then b) trawled through her (rather extensive photo collection) from the 60's to present day and assures me it hasn't occured (that is, of course, after another verbal bashing for even asking the question. lol.)

I don't think Cher looks particularly bad. The truth is, she looks the same now as she did when she was 30. Which is unnatural and ridiculous in my opinion.
I guess it would be OK if she could just lie and tell people she was younger, but everyone knows that she's past 60 so what's the point?

Actually Maggie has had surgery to her eyes. (I have her biography)
In 1989 she had a condition called Graves disease, it is a problem with the thyroid gland and one of the things it causes is protrusion and puffiness of the eyes. Maggie has surgery to correct this.
I don't think it has really altered her appearance that much, I think she looks great for a woman in her 70's.

That's medicinal though, well, sort of. I thought you were thinking along the botox lines.
I dunno, this obsession with plastic surgery is ridiculous but it's become the norm almost, don't you think? This is not coming out at all right, but I'll keep forging on.
My friend and I were having a corny movie night, which meant that we watched anything with Meg Ryan or Hugh Grant in it (Queen and King of corny those two - though Meg Ryan is a pretty awesome dramatic actress as well) and Meg Ryan looks so different it's crazy. Not bad or anything (hell, if I look like her at 46 I'll be beyond happy) but the plastic surgery is getting increasingly obvious.
What do you guys think? (If it makes no sense, I apologise. I'm still recovering from afore-mentioned corny movie night.)

I ment like on the botox lines. I just wanted to know if you guys think she had work done or not. MinnieQuill: Yes Meg's plastic surgery is getting VERY noticable! Everyone is so obessed with their appearemce and get plastic surgery, its getting disgusting how like all celebs are plastic.

I don't think that plastic surgery's bad. In fact I'd love to get a boob lift if I could find the money. (You have no idea how bad your boobs will sag when they're really big, like my double D's) I'd probably get botox or collagen or a facelift, too. To me that's not "unnatural;" it's just decreasing some of the signs of aging, which I can understand.
I'd never do anything to change my face, though. I used to want a nose job sooooooo bad, but now I'm kind of fond of my nose, mainly because I'm proud to be Cherokee. I'm so light-skinned and blue-eyed that you wouldn't even know I'm Native American if it weren't for my big nose.

I can see the reasoning behind getting plastic surgery though. Making movies is their job and unfortunately appearances are a huge part of that. Directors etc. want their actresses and actors to look young and that can require plastic surgery. Hell, if I was an actress I'd probably have a few dermal abrassions etc. The face lift thing would freak me out though. I know the doctors are specialists and everything, but a scalpel cutting into my face really doesn't appeal. If they slipped even a little bit ...
And using Meg Ryan as an example; I don't think she looks bad at all, and she's used the plastic surgery enhance her features, not change them overly so.

MinnieQuill: I'm not saying Meg looks bad, its just noticable. She actually looks very nice, in my opinion. I understand that actors/actresses have to get it so they can get a part in a movie but it would make me feel kind of strange, knowing that Im plastic...

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to seem like you were saying that Meg Ryan looked bad. I was just saying what I thought about actors/actresses and plastic surgery.
I'd feel wierd if someone put a bit of plastic in me to change my nose or something as well. Dermal abrasion - fine. Anything requiring the insertion of plastic - hell no! As for the scalpel - I'm already running at the thought.

That's fine, I was just saying Meg Ryan looked good.
I wouldn't get plastic surgery, just because I'd feel unnatural, thats why I don't think Maggie would get any plastic surgery. She looks too natural for her to have gotten it.

no way she did not get plastic surgery. i don't think that maggie smith is the type of person who reall cares about what others think of her appearence. she is a great role model for kids.

I have to agree. Some people just take plastic surgery way to far. But I don't think Maggie has ever had any. While she may have had something to fix the puffiness, I seriously doubt she's had any superficial nip and tucking. Maggie is in her seventies and looks fantastic. If you watch some of her first movies and look at her first pictures, she is an absolutely gorgeous read, blonde, or brunette. SHe wears it all with dignity and grace and she rocks it! I also saw the episode of Charlie Rose were she said she doesn't really caare what she looks like, and I say more power to her. Maggie is absolutely one of my favorite actresses and I love her to pieces. She always looks superior to everyone around her while simultaneously cracking everyone up or making them cry. She Rocks!!

I respect women who've managed to age gracefully without the "surgeries", Botox is not very aesthetic at all. I've seen people who has numerous "re-fixes", they never look that good after doing it.
