Hello all,
Okay maybe I am beating a dead horse here and if I am someone please PM me and tell me to shut up.
When I was emailing Foci yesterday it struck me the timeline around Snape hearing the prophecy, Snape turning spy for Dumbledore, and the reason Dumbledore gave Harry didn’t add up.
So I decided to do a little digging.
While doing said digging I read the Phoenix's Lament character again.
Stay with me here because this is where I stop caring about what happens to Snape and discover something about Min. Lets follow the flow of events:
1 Harry tells everyone in the Hospital wing Dumbledore is dead.
2 Fawkes starts to sing.
3 An undisclosed amount of time passes as everyone listens to Fawkes's song.
4 McGonagall enters the Hospital wing.
5 She asks Harry what happened. She says Hagrid told her Harry had been with Dumbledore when it happened and that Snape was involved.
6 Harry tells her Snape did it.
7 She starts to sway.
8 Poppy gets her a chair.
Okay so we know all of this already right? So what is new about this you ask?
Look at it again. Minerva's reaction in the Hospital Wing ISN'T her reaction to Dumbledore's death (She already knew he was dead when she walked in - she asks Harry for details). Her reaction in the Hospital wing is to finding out Snape was the traitor!
Remember Hagrid didn't believe Harry when he said Snape was the one who did it. Hagrid believed Snape escaped on Dumbledore’s orders. Hagrid is the one who moves Dumbledore's body - he would only do that on Minerva's orders. Hagrid has to have been the one to tell Minerva of Albus's death. We don't get to see that scene. We only see the Hospital Wing reaction and the office reaction. The only thing we know about the funeral is what Harry could see from the back.
I would submit then there is quite a bit of time for her to react between when she finds out and when we next see her. (Remember the line about Harry not knowing how much time had passed because of Fawkes's song.) We do see a reaction in the office. True, but she certainly isn’t going to lose it in front of Harry especially when she knows the Heads of House are on the way in. At some point she may have even been in the office prior to the scene with Harry. After all Edvard, the former Headmaster, had already left his frame to watch for the Minister when she entered the office with Harry. He would have only done that on Minerva’s orders. And when and where did she contact Arthur and Molly to let them know about Bill?
This means Minerva is not is an OoC in the hospital scene as we all may have first thought.
I think this gives us some great story opportunities. And doesn't necessarily damage the shipp.
So what do you think?
